Lot’s Choice Genesis 13-14

Maybe you are thinking, “I remember that the Bible says that Abram’s nephew Lot left his home to go with Abram. What ever happened to Lot?”

This story will be about Lot We don’t know why he left home with Abram and Sarai, but maybe Abram was taking care of him. We do know that Lot’s father had died in Ur. The Bible tells us that Lot and his wife went with Abram, leaving their home country. They then went to Egypt, and to a new city.

Abram was a very rich man. He had lots of sheep, cows, and servants, so he needed a lot of land for all his animals to graze on. But Lot had many animals too, and soon there was a problem. There wasn’t enough room for both of them! Their servants argued with each other all the time.

Abram’s servants wanted the good pasture for their sheep to graze on, but Lot’s servants wanted it too. They both wanted the good spots to pitch their tents. Finally Abram decided something had to be done! There just wasn’t enough room for both of them. So Abram went to Lot and had a talk with him.

“Look at all the land around us,” he told him. “We have lots of room to move to. The best thing is for us both to go different ways. If you move that way, I will go this way; if you move this way, I will go that way. Then there will be room for all of us.”

Lot looked all around him. He saw a beautiful city where there were very green pastures and cool rivers. That land looked so good to him that he decided to move there.

But what do we have to say about Lot’s choice? He was selfish, wasn’t he? He didn’t let Abram make the first choice. He didn’t leave the good land for Abram. No, he thought only about how rich hewas going to be. He thought only about himself.

And did Lot have a happy life because of his choice? No. We never are blessed by God if we act selfishly. To begin with, the king of the city where Lot moved to had a war with another king. Lot was captured, and was taken away as a prisoner. Then Abram had to go get Lot and bring him home again.

The city Lot moved to was called Sodom. Sodom was a very wicked city. People didn’t believe in God. They liked to sin and did not feel sorry for their sins.

What do you think will happen when Lot moves to a wicked city? Do you think it will bring him closer to God, or cause him to sin more?

If you say he will sin more, you are right. Later we will hear how Lot began to be friends with the people of Sodom until finally God had to destroy it.

It is the same with you and me. We must be very careful who our friends are. If we have naughty friends who swear or disobey their parents, we may become naughty too. We should pray for them, but seek to become friends with boys and girls who try to obey God.

A HAND-AND-FOOT UNION

Dr. Halbeck, a missionary in India, from the top of a neighboring hill noticed two lepers sowing peas in the field. One had no hands, the other had no feet, these members being wasted away by disease. The one who wanted the hands was carrying the other who wanted the feet upon his back, and he again carried the bag of seed and dropped a pea every now and then, which the other pressed into the ground with his foot; so between the two they did the work of one.

In our dark days, may God grant us to be a hand and a foot to each other. “By love serve one another” (Gal. 5:13).
