BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Since for many of you the summer holidays are now here, you do not have the daily tasks which you had at school. But I am quite certain that other tasks or duties are given you to do at home. Maybe many of these duties are done by you all year, even during school days, and possibly other duties have been added to them. Some of you may even have jobs for which you will be paid.
How do you go about your duties or tasks which have been given you to do? Is the question sometimes asked, “Do I have to do this?” Or is it sometimes said, “I don’t want to”? We would hope not.
God’s Word also gives us many tasks and duties to perform. It tells us to seek, to strive, to search, to obey. It tells us how we should walk, how we should dress, how we should talk. What is our answer to these things? Do we seek to do them? In fact, the Catechism, which is based upon God’s Word, says that everyone is to “perform the duties of his station and calling as willingly and faithfully as the angels in heaven.” You may say, “But that’s not possible.” Is your prayer then, “Lord, help me Thy will to do”? We read this in Psalter 236, where the poet also asks:
Give me the single eye
Thy Name to glorify,
O Lord, my God Most High,
With heart sincere.
This is a prayer for all of us, whether we are young or old.
In the Bible we find that duties were also given to persons, at times by the Lord and sometimes by others. Were these tasks always done at once without a question? As you search out the answers to the quiz this month, you will find out. The first letters spell out a duty given to two sons in Matthew 21. We pray that you as young people will seek to willingly do what is given you to do, doing it then as the Apostle Paul wrote, “not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God.”

We shall again try to answer the letters which we have received—
Patricia Kerkhoff
Did your parents have a nice visit in Holland, Patricia? I suppose you would have liked to go with them. Have you ever been there? We have been there several times. How does your computer program work? Is it like a concordance?
Hendrika Boeder
It is always nice when the family can work on the Bible quiz together, Hendrika. If there are questions about certain things, then it can also be discussed together. Cod’s Word contains so much instruction, and we may also ask the Lord to help us in understanding it.
Jennifer Van Strien
We were glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Jennifer. If we would only remember everything we learn about the Bible, but so much is soon forgotten. The psalmist in Psalm 119 prayed often, “O Lord, teach me Thy statutes,” and we need to pray the same thing.
Jonathan Arnoldussen
I usually answer all the letters which I receive, Jonathan. Some don’t write letters, which is O.K., since the main purpose is the answering of the quiz. However, it is very nice to hear from the boys and girls, so don’t hesitate to write.
Rachel Kik
It was nice to hear that you were able to memorize quite a few Bible verses, Rachel. Sometimes those texts which we learn when we are young come to our minds many years later. Congratulations to your grandparents on their anniversary. Fifty years is a long time.
Aline Bosch
What did you like best about Holland, Aline? I know that the time always goes by very rapidly when on vacation, so that you can never see everything and everybody. Did you have any problem in speaking Dutch? When it’s really necessary, we seem to learn more quickly.
Derek Kreft
That old “wreck” is certainly giving you problems, Derek. Were you able to get it running again? Would you like to be a mechanic and work on cars every day? The Bible speaks of artificers, and the dictionary indicates that mechanics could be included among them.
Leanne Neels
How did you break your arm, Leanne? When we are without the use of an arm, even for a short time, we realize how much we make use of it. That is true of all the various parts of our body. With the psalmist we must say that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Aaron Stubbe
It was nice to hear from you, Aaron. Although your birthday is already past, we hope that you had a nice birthday, and that you may have many more. I think that there are quite a few boys and girls whose parents have also done the Bible quizzes when they were young. I did too.
Daniel Lipsy
I suppose you are looking forward to your trip to New Jersey, Daniel. I’m sure your grandparents are also looking forward to it. We are glad to hear that you enjoy doing the Bible quiz. May the Lord teach us to love His Word.
Janella Arnoldussen
Does your family plan to do any travelling this summer, Janella? It is always nice to visit other places. Did your Oma enjoy her visit in Holland? As a person becomes older, it also becomes more difficult to travel, even though traveling is much easier today than it was years ago.
Cindy Kreft
We live in an area where there are also quite a few fruit trees, Cindy. I have an apple tree and a pear tree in my yard, but really don’t take care of them the way I should. Is Nobleford far from where you live? I suppose others from your school will also be going there.
Mary Bosch
We welcome you also to the Bible quiz, Mary. We hope that you may be able to do it for many years. Did you like going to school in Holland? It probably was a much bigger school than you have in New Zealand, but the boys and girls have to learn much the same things.
Kristy Van Tilburg
Are you taking good care of your baby brother, Kristy? We read of a girl in the Bible who also helped to look after her baby brother. Do you know who that was? I think that you mother can find many ways in which you can be helpful.
Daniel Ceuze
I had to look on the map to see where Levin was located, Daniel. You do not have to travel far to be at the beach, whether you go east or west. The sea can be very calm at times, but we know that, just as the Bible says, the waters can roar and be troubled.
Pete Lipsy
We are always glad to see the answers arrive from the boys and girls, Pete. This tells us that they are looking in Cod’s Word for answers, and we hope that they may do this their whole lifetime. Each time it will be a little easier for you, as you do the quiz month by month.
Teresa Van Tilburg
Your letter is the last one this time, Teresa, and then the list goes to the printers. You have quite a few animals on your farm. It’s a good thing that you don’t have to take care of all of them. Give our greetings to your sisters and brother, and your parents too.
Many thanks again, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. In these months there are always many things which keep us busy, but it is good if we may often find time to read and search Cod’s Word. In the parable of the sower, the seed was the Word of Cod. May that seed also be sown in our hearts, whether we are young or older.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

NEAR GOD
A little boy always used to come to his father with everything. It happened one day that the rather was engaged in his study when the little boy came to him.
When he heard the well-known tap at the study door, his father said, “Come in,” and the child entered.
“Well, my little man; what do you want now?”
“Nothing, Daddy; I only want to be with you,” and he made his way to the corner of the room, and remained quietly alone with his father.
Do we long at times just to be near God without bringing special, self-centered requests? “That they should be with Him” (Mark 3:14).
