BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

It is at this time of the year that we are usually able to spend some time outdoors. Some families do some travelling and some go camping, but it isn’t necessary to go away from home in order to enjoy the outdoors. In our own backyards there is much to see and enjoy. Do we ever look about us at all the trees, plants, shrubs, grass, and flowers? As we travel through the country we can see crops growing in the fields, pasture lands, and forested areas. These all show to us the splendor of nature, the handiwork of God. The psalmist in Psalm 19 said, ‘The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth His handiwork.” Isn’t this also true of the growing things on the earth?

As we look at all these things, are we reminded of our Creator, who has made it all? Too often we do not think of Him. Solomon had to remind young people (and older ones too), “Remember thy Creator.” Famous inventors are remembered in various ways, often having their names attached to their inventions, even many years later. Think only of how the name of Alexander Graham Bell has been carried forward throughout the years in connection with the telephone. But how little the Creator is remembered by us, His creatures, in the midst of His creation!

Have you ever thought about the vast number of different trees, plants, shrubs, flowers, fruits, and vegetables there are? Stop in a nursery where plants are sold or visit a botanical garden, and you will see a seemingly endless variety. Walk through the produce department of one of the large supermarkets. What a display there is of choice things to eat! How can we then think little of God, the Creator? The poet in Psalter 171 wrote, “All nature joins in singing a joyful song of praise.” But what do we do?

From Genesis 1 we know that the trees and plant life, all the growing things on the earth, were created on the third day. Therefore these things have existed throughout the ages. The Bible often makes mention of the different kinds of trees and fruits which the people of those days made use of in their daily life. They too could admire God’s handiwork and were called upon to do so. We can only echo that which the psalmist has said, “Oh that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” It was necessary then, and it is necessary today.

Far greater than the works of nature are God’s works of grace in the hearts of sinners. May we learn to know Him in nature, but to seek then also through His Word to be led into the greater mysteries of salvation. In searching for different kinds of trees, how necessary it is that we seek to find that Tree of Life mentioned in Revelation 22, the leaves of which were for the healing of the nations.

The first letters of the answers will spell out seven words which are related to us in Genesis 1, telling us what took place on the third day of creation. The quiz will show us some of the many different trees, plants, and fruits of Bible times.

Trina Huisman

I suppose your new church building is progressing well, Trina. At times it may seem to go rapidly, but at other times little progress can be seen. When do they anticipate having it finished? Do you know how long Solomon’s temple took to be built?

Kristy Van Tiiburg

How many dogs do you have, Kristy? There are many different kinds of dogs to be found. It seems that in Bible times most dogs ran wild, although mention is made of dogs in the house under the table. Can you think of some examples where dogs are mentioned in the Bible?

Aline Bosch

Yes, Aline, no matter how hard I try, mistakes do creep in. But I’m always glad to know that they are being caught by the boys and girls. What are you studying in school at present? Anything special? You must be about in the middle of your school year.

Derek Kreft

I see that you have not yet given up on your old car, Derek. Repairs are continually being made in our daily lives—houses, automobiles, appliances, clothes, and even parts of our bodies. But Solomon had to confess of the Lord’s doings, “Who can make that straight which He hath made crooked?”

Daniel Geuze

The Bible stories have much to say to us, Daniel. There are examples enough to show us the sad results of walking in ways of wickedness, but also the blessing to be found in fearing the Lord. Does Eric live quite a distance from your house?

Joanne Noorduyn

Thank you for the picture which you sent me, Joanne. I don’t know if sparrows are found everywhere, but they certainly are a common bird. Even though they are often thought to be of little value, the Lord knows of them. How old are your brothers?

Jorica Aleman

We are having rain today, Jorica, and it is quite refreshing, since it has been quite dry of late. Where did you go on your field trip? We do not have much of a garden, especially since rabbits, woodchucks, and moles get most of the benefits from it. Our greetings to your family.

Julia Neels

We are quite well, Julia. What are you doing during the summer holidays? Perhaps you are already looking forward to the beginning of the school again in the fall. Time never stands still, and one event follows another in rapid succession.

Cindy Kreft

Certain antiques can be very valuable, Cindy, although it is true that certain things decrease in value as they become older. The Bible also speaks of things old and new, and we need its guidance to discern which is the better. Jeremiah speaks of an old way which is not good, but of an old path which should be sought and asked for.

Cynthia Huisman

How is your grandfather, Cynthia? The Bible tells us of the troublesome times of old age, and how often we can see the truth of this as we look around us. It is sometimes said that we like to become old, but we don’t want to be old.

Teresa Van Tilburg

A swimming pool with holes in it is similar to the bag with holes of which the prophet Haggai spake, Teresa. Whatever is put into it will soon get away. God’s Word uses many examples out of daily life by which to teach us. What did you name your puppy?

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

You certainly saw a lot of country, Suzanne. Probably in all your travels you found out that there is no place like home. As we travel so far, it should cause us to realize something of the greatness of God, who is everywhere present.

Mary Bosch

Tests are important for us, Mary, since they show what we know and what we still need to learn. They are also important for teachers. Just as a doctor, who gives a blood test, knows which medicine to give, so a teacher knows what the student needs. Which subjects do you like best?

Gary Neels

I see that you were taking some medicine, Gary. Did it help? There are many different kinds of medicine, but with it all we need the Lord’s blessing upon it. That is really more important than the medicine. What are you doing this summer?

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for your answers to the quiz. Before very long most of you will be going back to school again. The summer goes by so rapidly, but this is true of our whole lifetime, especially when we look back upon it. We hope, the Lord willing, to hear from you again next month.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

JAMES THE THIRD

An invalid mother who devotedly loved her boy called him to her bedside before she died, saying, “I want you to be James the Third.”

She then proceeded to explain what she meant and told him never to forget her last message to him.

After his mother’s death, James III proceeded to college and his name became a subject of curiosity to his fellow students. One asked if it had anything to do with English history, while another suggested that it was probably due to the fact that he was the third child. To all these suggestions James gave a negative answer.

“What then is the meaning?” they eagerly asked him.

James told them the story of his mother’s last message: “Christ first, my neighbor second, and myself third.” It was good advice from a dying mother and what a different world it would be if we always, according to Scripture rule, sought grace to place Christ first and our neighbor second!

SIMPLE FAITH

There was once a woman who was well-known for her simple faith and calmness in the midst of trials.

Another woman, living at a distance and hearing of her, said, “I must go and see that woman and learn the secret of her blessed life.”

She went to the woman and said, “Are you the woman with the great faith?”

“No,” was the reply, “I am not the woman with the great faith, but I am a woman who by grace has a little faith in the great Cod” (Ps. 95:3).

THREE BAD PURCHASES

A school teacher once remarked that the child who buys the truth makes a good purchase and inquired if any student remembered an example in Scripture of a bad purchase.

“I do,” replied a boy. “Esau made a bad purchase when he sold his birthright for a mess of pottage” (Gen. 25:33).

A second said: “Judas made a bad purchase when he sold Christ for thirty pieces of silver” (Matt. 27:5).

A third boy observed: “He makes a bad purchase who, to gain the whole world, loses his own soul” (Matt. 16:26).

Three bad purchases indeed!

THE BEST PREACHING

A brief and simple, but very expressive eulogy was pronounced by Martin Luther upon a pastor named Nicholas Haussmann, at Zwickau, in 1522.

“What we preach,” said the great Reformer, “he lives.”

“If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them” (John 13:17; 2 Tim. 2:2).

EVERYTHING FOR NOTHING

An aged believer, on being asked to explain salvation, replied, “Something for nothing.”

Another aged saint, who had weathered the storm for many a long year, and was nearing the heavenly harbor, on hearing this related, exclaimed, “Oh, it’s even better than that, it’s ‘everything for nothing’!” (Rom. 6:23).
