CURATORIUM ANNOUNCEMENT
The Curatorium hopes to meet on June 25, 1991, at 9 A.M. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Lord willing, with those who may have received a consistorial attest with respect to either a ministerial or a ministerial-missionary calling. Any male member of our denomination who feels the Lord has called him to the office of minister or missionary, should contact his consistory. Upon such a request, the consistories of vacant churches should notify their moderator for counsel prior to granting attestation. The consistory who grants a consistorial attest should forward it to the clerk of the Curatorium prior to May 15, 1991.
Rev. John den Hoed
824 18th Avenue S
Rock Valley, Iowa 51247
A list of questions will then be sent to the consistory for completion. May the Lord gladden us with His deeds in 1991 by sending unto His vineyard those who in time to come may stand as watchmen on the walls of Zion. May He graciously remember the many vacant congregations, give unto the office-bearers courage and steadfastness in His Word. May He bind all of us unto His Word and give that this Word may be fruitful in our midst, to the glory of His holy Name and the salvation of lost sinners.

REV. M. HEERSCHAP
The minister was privileged to return home from Calgary. So far the judgment of the doctors is that they cannot find any cancer anymore. Surely, the Lord has done great things in blessing the means. We do not know what lies hidden in the future, but thus far the Lord has made all things well. May He strengthen Rev. Heerschap so that he could still do some work in our midst.

MISSION TEAM
We request your prayers for the mission team as they hope to leave for Bolivia on April 24, 1991, the Lord willing, since their formal studies of the Spanish language in Costa Rica will then be concluded. May the Lord graciously go before the team as their Breaker (Micah 2:13) and continue to assist Rev. and Mrs Bazen, the Nijsse family, and Miss Stam with the Spanish language. We are glad to be able to inform you that on February 17, our missionary, Rev. Peter L. Bazen, preached his first full sermon in Spanish and may testify that the Lord has granted divine assistance. Above all, may doors of providential favor go open in Bolivia, enabling the mission team and Mission Board to testify that the Lord of Rehoboth—the God who makes room—has made room for our denominational mission endeavors in the midst of this poor and needy country.

INFORMATION
Judge Rules in Favor of Pledge of Allegiance
Daily recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance does not violate the constitutional rights of school children, a federal judge in Chicago ruled. The National and International Religion Report of March 11 th reported that Judge Ann C. Williams summarily dismissed a suit brought two years ago by Robert Sherman against an Illinois law he claims violated the First Amendment rights of his son. Sherman, national spokesman for American Atheists, objected to the phrase, “One nation under God.” His son, he said, was “embarrassed and faced sanctions” when he refused to say the pledge. “How can I raise my son to be a good little atheist if the state requires him to say there’s a God and a judge says it’s okay?” Sherman asked after the ruling. Sherman plans to appeal the decision. May the Lord instruct all parents, including Mr. Sherman, in the way our children “should go” (Prov.22;6). May we pray continually that our children will grow up to fear and serve the Lord and not to be ashamed to say publicly, “One nation under God.”
The Army and Homosexuals
Concerned Women of America reports that the Army continues to state it has not changed its policy against homosexuals in service. However, Sgt. Perry Watkins, honorably discharged in 1984 because he is homosexual, announced that “the Army has agreed to give him about $135,000 in back pay and full retirement benefits in a settlement that concludes years of court battles,” The Washington Post reported. Defended by the ACLU of WA, he also received a promotion to “staff sergeant first class, retroactive to June 1, 1985.” Thus evidence continues to show that this vocal minority continues to gain power and an increasingly sympathetic ear in official government circles. May we pray that the leaders of our Armed Forces and nation would be given strength to stand firm against this sin condemned by Scripture.
World Council of Churches Under Pressure from Conservative Churches
The World Council of Churches (WCC) risks the loss of its Orthodox members if it does not reform theologically, according to a three-page statement of concerns issued by angry “Orthodox” leaders at the end of the WCC’s general assembly last month in Australia. They especially objected to a controversial presentation by South Korean feminist theologian Chung Hyun Kyung, a Presbyterian. Accompanied by Korean and aboriginal dancers, she portrayed a female Holy Spirit fighting exploitation and injustice; called out to the spirits of people who suffered and died in the past; and rejected “an omnipotent, macho, warrior God who rescues all good guys and punishes all bad guys.” Although most delegates gave her a standing ovation, Orthodox and some other conservatives responded with shouts of “apostate,” “un-Christian,” and “syncretistic” (tendency to blend religions). This kind of blasphemy tends to be the result when efforts are made to blend doctrines in the name of “ecumenical unity.” The WCC has a sorry record of support for all kinds of clearly un-Christian “social causes” and religious beliefs. “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light” (2 Cor. 11:14). The media often portrays the WCC’s reaction to events as the official reaction of the church or of Christians in general.
A True Need?
At the end of January, a Gallup poll showed church attendance in the U.S. at its highest level in a quarter-century, with 44% of the adult population (about 110 million people) attending a service within the preceding week. Also, the February edition of the National & International Religion Report indicated that 57% said they are praying twice or more daily and with greater intensity. Is the Gulf War driving people back to God and the church, as the Gallup poll suggests? The Lord has used wars in the past to awaken insensible sinners out of darkness. May our people experience a true revival, a true feeling sense of their sins, and a true repentance.
Soviet Christian Radio Broadcasts
Radio Station HCJB began transmitting gospel programs into Soviet Georgia last month, marking the first time the troubled region’s four million people have had access to Christian radio in their own language, HCJB announced. The half-hour shortwave broadcasts consist mainly of Scripture readings from the newly translated Georgian Bible. May the unadulterated truth of Scripture give light to a nation which heretofore has been in gross darkness.
