BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again this month we have a crossword puzzle for you. It is based on the ninth Lord’s Day of the Heidelberg Catechism, which speaks to us about the first article of the Apostles’ Creed. As in the past, most of the answers will be found in the texts which are indicated in the margin alongside this Lord’s Day in the back of the Psalter. Those that can be found in these texts are marked with an asterisk (*).

The first article of the Apostles’ Creed teaches us about “God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.” In the previous Lord’s Day we learned that Father, Son, and Holy Ghost are the one true God, a triune God, meaning one God in three Persons. When speaking of God, we must do so with deep reverence. We are to show respect for those who are placed over us, but, sad to say, many today have no regard for God and for His Word. What shall it then be to one day be called before Him to give an account of what we have done! If we stand guilty before an earthly judge, we have every reason to be worried, but then to appear before God who knows and sees all that we are and do!

This Lord’s Day tells us about God the Father’s work of creation and His almighty power over all things. We must not think that He created and provides for His creatures without the Son and the Holy Ghost, but this work is said to be His special work in regard to the world and all that it contains. The first two chapters of Genesis relate to us how, when, and what He created. This too is not said to be the truth by many today, but we must say, “God’s Word is true.”

God the Father also provides in a special fatherly way in the hearts and lives of His people. Because of that which the Lord Jesus Christ, His Son, has done for this people in taking upon Himself their sins and guilt, His blessings to them are everlasting blessings. May we learn to beg Him for such blessings, even in the days of our youth. He Himself invites us to do so.

There are again letters which require a reply —

Karin Bertram

Your uncle and aunt are here in Kalamazoo as I am writing this, Karin. I am sure they will have much to tell you when they return, D.V. It is nice to meet those whom we have met in our Bible quizzes in years gone by. Wherever we go throughout the world, we are also made to realize that the Lord is everywhere present.

Janella Arnoldussen

Did you have a nice birthday, Janella? Birthdays are always special occasions, and we do hope and pray that you may have many more of them. When young, we can hardly wait until our birthday arrives, but as we become older, they often seem to come so quickly. We too hope that your grandmother may have a safe trip.

Patricia Kerkhoff

It was nice to hear from you again, Patricia. We can have winter weather even in April, but we can then see the many signs of spring all around us. We must always remember that the Lord sends the wind, the rain, the snow, and the sunshine, and He is most wise in all that He does.

Willetta Les

No doubt you were happy to see another crossword puzzle this month, Willetta. Just as crossword puzzles are made to fit together in a particular way, the events of this world and of our lives also take place according to the perfect plan of the Lord. Sad to say, we do not always see this, nor do we so willingly accept it to be His way for us.

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

How long will your brother be staying in the United States, Suzanne? Modern means of transportation can bring us those long distances in such a short time today so that much time is saved, and there are many other time-savers in all that we do. We must ask ourselves, “What do we do with the time which we save?”

Cornelis Paans

We want to welcome you to the quiz, Cornelis. The Bible is such a wonderful gift, and we hope that you may use it often, not only for the Bible quiz, but every day again. Do you also have Bible lessons in school? I suppose you have made many new friends in New Zealand.

Cindy Kreft

Have you been able to learn some Creole, Cindy? Learning another language takes much effort, but it can often be most helpful in later life. We read that the apostle Paul could speak several languages, and we know that he was able to make much use of it. Give our greetings to your family, especially to Remy and Renette.

Aline Bosch

We have been looking at pictures of people and places in New Zealand, Aline, and think it would be nice to pay a visit there. Too bad it is so far away from here. Your letters seem to make us live closer together, since we learn to know many things about you in this way. We hope to hear from you again next month. Where in Canada does your penpal live?

Leanne Les

How long have you taken organ lessons, Leanne? We read quite often about music and musical instruments in the Bible. Can you think of some examples? Do you have a parsonage for your new minister or will you have to build one? We hope there will not be too much delay in his coming.

Jonathan Arnoldussen

What are you able to do with your science lab, Jonathan? I assume you are quite interested in science, also in school. There are many different branches of science to be studied, but in them all we should be brought to the knowledge of the infinite wisdom of the Lord God, the Almighty Creator of all things.

Derek Kreft

We can only imagine what it must be like to have to learn a new language in a strange country, Derek. Even the customs must be strange for them. Although the Bible does not speak about it, we can assume that Joseph in Egypt, Daniel and his friends in Babylon, and the little maid of Naaman’s wife had similar experiences.

Mary Bosch

Your letter is the last one for this time, Mary. In fact, I see there are two letters from you. You must know quite a lot of Bible texts by now. Solomon in the book of Proverbs said, “Write them upon the table of thine heart.” We hope this may be done by all the boys and girls who study the Bible with us.

Many thanks to all again for the answers to the quiz. Each month goes by so quickly, but we hope that there is always time for studying the Bible, not only at school, but also in your homes. May we find it to be a light upon our pathway of life.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

THE POWER OF PRAYER

A pious young man in the army, not finding a convenient place in the barracks in which he was quartered, one night, when it was dark, went into an adjoining field for the purpose of secret devotion.

Two men who belonged to the same regiment and in whose breasts enmity had long subsisted against each other, were resolved to end this enmity, as they said, by a battle. They were prevented from going during the day for fear of punishment. They were led by providence to the same part of the field where the young man was engaged in his secret exercises. They were surprised at hearing, as they thought, a voice in the field at that time of night; and much more so, when they drew nearer and heard a man at prayer. They stopped and gave attention, and, through divine blessing, the prayer had such an effect on both as to turn their enmity into love. They instantly took each other by the hand and cordially confessed that there existed in their hearts no longer any hatred to each other.

DIVINE PROVIDENCE

“The LORD was with Joseph ... and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison.”

— Genesis 39:21

The respectability of Mr. Bunyan’s character, and the propriety of his conduct while in prison at Bedford, appear to have operated very powerfully on the mind of the jailor who showed him much kindness in permitting him to go out to visit his friends occasionally—once to take a journey to London. It is stated, that some of his persecutors in London, knowing that he was often out of prison, sent an officer to talk with the jailor on the subject. In order to discover the fact, he was to get there in the middle of the night.

Bunyan was at home with his family, but he was so restless that he could not sleep. He therefore acquainted his wife that, though the jailor had given him liberty to stay till the morning, yet, from his uneasiness, he must immediately return. He did so, and the jailor blamed him for coming in at such an unseasonable hour. Early in the morning the messenger came, and interrogating the jailor, said, “Are all the prisoners safe?” “Yes.” “Is John Bunyan safe?” “Yes.” “Let me see him.” He was called, and appeared, and all was well. After the messenger was gone, the jailor, addressing Mr. Bunyan, said, “Well, you may go in and out again just when you think proper, for you know when to return better than I can tell you.”
