The law gives menaces; the gospel gives promises .

— Thomas Adams

The law sends us to the gospel, that we may be justified, and the gospel sends us to the law again to enquire what is our duty, being justified.

— Samuel Bolton

The law is a hammer to break us, the gospel God’s oil to cure us.

— Stephen Charnock

When the law of God is written in our hearts, our duty will be our delight.

— Matthew Henry

Law says “Do,” grace says “Done.”

— John Jowett

The law discovers the disease. The gospel gives the remedy.

— Martin Luther

The giving of the law is part of the dispensation of the covenant of grace.

— Donald MacLeod

The law is a court of justice, but the gospel is a throne of grace.

— George Swinnock

The law may express sin but it cannot suppress sin.

— Thomas Adams

Just as the moon and the stars, though they are themselves bright and spread their light over all the earth, yet vanish before the greater brightness of the sun, so the law, however glorious in itself, has no glory in face of the gospel’s grandeur.

— John Calvin

The law sends us to Christ to be justified, and Christ sends us to the law to be regulated.

— John Flavel

God’s law was once impressed upon our natures, and we are obliged to all that was written upon Adam’s heart.

— Thomas Manton

The light which men got from Moses and the law was at best only starlight compared to noonday.

— J.C. Ryle

THORNS

When the first Adam fell, God cursed the ground for man’s sake, and said, Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee. When Christ, the Second Adam, came to be made a curse for us, He was crowned with those very thorns with which the earth was cursed, thereby removing the curse far from us. Dear Lord, enlighten my understanding, that I may more and more see the infinite value of this wondrous work of everlasting love; and may my base ingratitude and unbelief never be thorns to wound Thee afresh.

— M. Winslow
