BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
During the summer months you are often able to do some travelling, even sometimes for short distances. You then see places of special interest. At times memorials have been built on the site or historical markers are placed to remind travellers of the events which took place there or of the persons who were involved. Too often all the honor is given to man, and not much thought given to the God of heaven and earth who gave the wisdom, ability, and courage to men of the past. Even as we view the works of men in the construction of cities, tall buildings, modern highways, bridges, tunnels, etc., do we ever recognize God’s hand in providing the means to make these things possible? God is often forgotten, also by us. Or do you sometimes see markers and memorials which turn your attention to the works of the Lord? Perhaps in certain places you do see Bible texts imprinted as a reminder of the Lord’s doings in all these things. It would be interesting to hear of them if you do.
In the Bible we also read of memorials and markers which were placed by those who feared the Lord and gave praise to Him for the wonders of His hand. Cities and places were often called by special names to make known to future generations what the Lord had done. It is true that even in those days it had to be said of some that they gave their own names to lands and cities in the hope of lasting fame. But then the Bible tells us, “Nevertheless man being in honour abideth not: he is like the beasts that perish.”
Even as you study history at school, how often do you stop to think of the God who rules over all things. The apostle Paul said to the Athenians, “He is Lord of heaven and earth; He giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; in Him we live, and move, and have our being.” This was true in
Paul’s days and throughout all history since the world began, but is also true today. Many people speak about “luck” and “chance,” but then God is forgotten. May we all learn how all things are in His hand, and that we need Him in everything we are and do. Then every day our prayer must be, “Lord, teach me Thy will to do.”
Our quiz this month is about memorials and events which are spoken of in the Word of God. They are also reminders to us of the great works of the Lord, but also in them we see how in some cases God is forgotten. The first letters of the answers will spell out seven words found in Joshua 4.

Again there are letters to answer —
Irene Verhey
It was nice to hear from you again, Irene. You do have a number of different animals on your farm. Do the hens keep you well supplied with eggs? If we see the great variety of food which we have upon our tables at mealtime, what reason there is to acknowledge the Lord for it!
Leanne Neels
You will have to be more careful, Leanne, especially with that arm. Do you think school will be somewhat more difficult for you this year? Or won’t you have some catching up to do? Every day we must be reminded that it is God who giveth wisdom, and to Him we must turn to seek true wisdom.
Charmain Huisman
Graduation is usually looked to with anticipation, Charmain, but, as you mentioned, it ends a certain period in our lives. Do you have an idea as to what type of work you would like to do in the future, D.V.? Although the word “future” holds much uncertainty in it, it must not leave us unconcerned, but bring us often in prayer for the Lord’s guidance.
Daniel Geuze
Did you do quite well on your exams, Daniel? They serve a purpose, but usually are not something to which we look forward. The word exam is not in the Bible, but we do find forms of the word examine. Do you know of any of them? How far is the farm from your home? How many cows do you have?
Aline Bosch
Where does your Oma live, Aline? Congratulations to your parents and you for their anniversary. Each year there are many days on which we are called to remember the goodness of the Lord in sparing us and providing for us and our loved ones. Of course, every day there is reason enough to do this.
Jonathan Arnoldussen
We seem to hear of quite a few earthquakes of late, Jonathan. Have you ever experienced one? In some places they seldom happen, while in other places they are more frequent, but we do know that they are not in man’s control. Can you think of some which took place in Bible times?
Trina Huisman
We are quite well, Trina. What are you doing during the summer holidays? Two months seems like a long time, but how quickly those months pass by us. Moses prayed, “Teach us to number our days,” and that is also a suitable prayer for young people.
Mary Bosch
It was good to hear that Ronald and Nelly had returned home safely, Mary. In travelling that many miles, we are subject to many dangers. Accidents do happen when only going a short distance, and thus we see how we need the Lord’s protection every moment, as the Psalter says, “in the home and by the way.”
Karin Bertram
Did your uncle and aunt take lots of pictures, Karin? If they did, it will probably take several evenings to see them all. Be sure to give them and also your grandparents our greetings. How are the twins doing? Just like all of us, they do get hungry, and I’m sure they let you know about it
Janella Arnoldussen
What does green mean in your swimmers’ class, Janella? There are usually beginners, intermediate, and advanced classes, but I wasn’t sure which one you would be in. Is your grandmother still in the Netherlands? It is nice that she was still able to make the trip.
Cynthia Huisman
Your letter is the last one this time, Cynthia. You mentioned that two persons had died in your congregation. Then the truth of God’s Word is shown to us, for it says, “It is appointed unto men once to die.” Therefore even boys and girls are taught to pray, “Prepare me, gracious God.”
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. In all our planning, also during the summer months, may we never forget that time is precious, and that we soon fly away. May the Lord favor us with His protecting care and with that favor which He shows unto His people.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
SELF-CONDEMNED
The Lord Barrington once asked Collins, the infidel writer, how it was that, though he seemed to have very little religion himself, he took so much care that his servants should attend church regularly. He replied, “To prevent their robbing or murdering me.”
To such a character, how applicable are these words, “Out of your own mouth will I judge you!”
