CURRENT EVENTS

ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED

Bills Offered Which Overturn Rust vs. Sullivan Decision

House Bill HR 2611 and Senate Bill S.323 are attempts to nullify the recent Supreme Court decision which upheld federal regulations barring medical facilities that receive federal funds from counseling patients about abortion. (see July Banner Current Events.) Please contact your two senators and your congressmen and urge them to oppose this legislation. Two points to include in your letter would be to remind them that this is not an issue where free speech is hindered. Medical centers may still counsel patients about abortion, but they will have to forego federal funding. Remind the representative that “free speech” is not the real issue but that killing unborn babies is, and that you are against having your tax dollars spent to promote this practice. Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider, has announced it will turn down $37 million in tax funding each year rather than go along with these regulations. That’s a lot of money that can be better spent (or saved).

Support for Dannemeyer/Smith-Mollohan-Coats Amendments Needed

In an update to the July Current Events section H.R. 1532 is a bill to authorize operation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Rep. Dannemeyer has offered an amendment which will continue to ban federally funded fetal tissue transplantation. Presently the NIH is carrying out research using such tissue (taken from freshly aborted babies) but is prohibited from transplanting the tissue. It is believed that, if the ban is lifted, abortions will increase and some may even become pregnant so they can have abortions and sell the tissue. Please urge your representatives in the House to support the Dannemeyer amendment to H.R. 1532.

The Smith-Mollohan-Coats Amendment re quires notification of one parent prior to performance of an abortion on a minor. This also deserves our support.

Fresh Opposition Needed Again to “Freedom of Choice” Act

As detailed in the January Banner Current Events section, the dangerous “Freedom of Choice Act” (FOCA) (S. 25 and HR 25) presently has 124 House sponsors and 27 Senate sponsors. Briefly, this bill would cancel virtually all pro-life laws on the state level nationwide even if Roe vs. Wade were overturned by the Supreme Court. This is a major danger to unborn children. We expect that these bills will be acted on in early 1992, but the time to begin opposition is now. Pray also (and write) that President Bush will continue to use his veto power against bills that contain pro-abortion language and thank him for his unwavering support of the unborn to date.

INFORMATION

Project 10 Sweeps Nation

According to USA Today, Project 10, designed by a lesbian Los Angeles school teacher to teach children how to function as homosexuals, is now used in all LA high schools and 30 of its 75 junior highs. In 1990, “more than 2,000 school districts nationwide” requested Project 10 handbooks.

The program teaches that homosexuality is normal and natural for about 10% of students and exposes all students to basic training in homosexuality so they can decide for themselves whether they are homosexuals or not. As the public school system continues to decline, we should be all the more thankful to the Lord for supplying us with our own Christian schools. May we continually pray for our schools that they may be kept from the outside influences of this sinful world. Parents who continue to use the public school system when they have the opportunity to use our own schools — How many warnings are needed to show us the danger we expose our children to by enrolling them in the public system? Do not deceive yourself by saying, “Such things are not taught in our public school.” Where God, humanly speaking, is thrust out, Satan in all his subtlety has an open invitation to work. Consider well your priorities and seek to believe that the place where God’s honor is sought and His Word exalted is the place where His blessing can be hoped for on the whole of education.

Good Friday Holiday Approved by Court

According to the latest Christian World Report, a federal appellate court has ruled that Hawaii’s observance of a state holiday on Good Friday does not violate the separation of church and state. While we concur with the decision of the court we certainly can’t go along with their reasoning. Writing for the majority, Judge Scannlain asserted, “Even if the Good Friday holiday had a religious purpose originally, it no longer does. For example, the Good Friday holiday has become a popular shopping day in Hawaii and businesses have benefited from the three-day weekend.” What a judgment and shame that we have an abundance of such judges in this once-Christian nation! May we beg the Lord incessantly for godly judges and rulers such as Joshua and Samuel who would lead this country in the fear and admonition of the Lord.

Government and the Lottery Business

A new study by DePaul University professor Robert Cooke and University of Chicago student Sandeep Mangalmurti concludes that state lotteries are “hypocritical, unjust, exploitative of poor people, and that state governments should get out of the lottery/gambling business. Hypocrisy creates injustice when persons who gamble among themselves are fined and imprisoned, while persons who gamble with agents of their state governments are not. The poor are told that success can be achieved painlessly, without hard work and perseverance. Standards for truth-in-advertising set by government agencies and the broadcast industry itself are ignored by more state lotteries.” Writing in the New York Times, columnist William Safire remarks that “only a few years ago, proponents of state lotteries were claiming that ‘state control would channel the profits of an unstoppable human frailty toward good ends.’ ‘Why let numbers racketeers and Mafia casino operators bilk the public,’ their argument went. ‘Why not steer those ill-gotten gains into public schools?’ The answer is spreading like a poison through state and local governments: immoral means have never led to moral ends.” Sadly, the poorest of our nation are generally those who squander their meager means in a hope to get rich by gambling. The very existence of the games are proof that profits are to be made since the losers far outweigh the “winners.” May the Lord root out this and other forms of covetousness from our hearts. Only then will it be rooted out of our lives and land.

Presbyterian Church (PCUSA) Votes Not to Adopt Sexuality Report

The 203rd General Assembly is over, but the debate on sexuality will continue until the 2.9-million-member Presbyterian Church (U.S.A) turns in a more liberal direction, as far as Bible professor John Carey of Agnes Scott College in Georgia is concerned. Carey was chairman of the 17-member PCUSA Special Task Force on Human Sexuality which produced the controversial report recommending a departure from biblical norms for sexual conduct in favor of an ethic based on “justice-love.” According to Carey, all is not lost because 42,000 copies of the report have been distributed throughout the denomination. However, a phone poll of over 42,000 PSUSA members indicated 99% were against its findings.

Unfortunately, this matter, and other departures from scriptural truths, have, by association, maligned the names of all Presbyterian denominations. Such reports, in plain contradiction to Scripture, show that many are being left over to the “strong delusions” God said would overtake those who choose to believe a lie.

Catholic-Protestant Relationships in Mexico Deteriorating

Catholic-Protestant relationships in Mexico have deteriorated badly in recent months, especially in the rural countryside, according to Chris Woehr of News Network International. For more than a year, she has been documenting a rising number of repressive attacks by Catholics against Protestants. In April and May alone, she said, the attacks included unlawful imprisonment of evangelicals in Puebla state, the beating of a seminarian and lay workers in Mexico state, the destruction of a church building in Tamaulipal state, and a violent assault of a congregation with Methodist roots in Oaxaca state. Publicly, some Catholic bishops condemn the violence, but at the same time the hierarchy has been sounding the alarm among Catholics about Protestant growth. That growth, Latin bishops warned their brethren in Rome, has been at the expense of the Catholic Church.

John Knox said during the Reformation in Scotland that he would be less fearful of 12,000 soldiers than of the Catholic Church and the idolatrous “Mass.” May we lay before the Lord the burden of these deceived people in Mexico and also our own mission team in Bolivia.

Supreme Court Justice Marshall Retires/Judge Clarence Thomas Nominated

President Bush nominated black, conservative Appeals Court Justice Clarence Thomas to fill the vacancy left by ultra-liberal Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Though not much is known about Thomas, it is clear that he favors a strict interpretation of the Constitution. This is generally good news since many Supreme Court decisions of recent years tended to “legislate from the bench” (i.e., create rights that the Constitution does not address) such as the infamous Roe vs. Wade decision which legalized abortion nationwide. Many expect Judge Thomas to be vehemently questioned on his views on many issues, especially by liberal members of the Senate Judiciary Committee who disfavor conservative views. Please try to remember Judge Thomas, not only during the confirmation hearings which are expected to take place this fall, but in a personal way so that he will be a judge who fears and serves his Judge above.
