BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
It is time again to write a few lines for another Bible quiz. For most of you the time of the year has arrived to return to school and all the studies connected with it. Every day you again have your schedule of activities, and a time is set aside for that purpose. Time and again that little word “time” pops up in our thoughts and in our daily lives. How often the question is asked, “What time is it?”
What is time? It can be a particular moment or it can be a longer period, such as an hour, a day, a week, a month, or a year. We must realize that it is a precious gift which the Lord has given us, but it will one day come to an end. In Revelation 10 the angel sware “that there should be time no longer.” That moment will arrive. How important it then is to use our God-given time wisely!
How can we use our time wisely? Perhaps I should let you tell me the answer to this. Just as people spend money when they have it, so likewise people spend time, and do so in many different ways. Like money, it can be squandered, it can be wasted, it can be lost, but we would all agree that in these ways it would not be using it wisely. Does God’s Word point out to us the way to use it wisely? I think it does, and that in many places in the Bible.
The quiz this month will draw our attention to them. The first letters of the answers will spell out seven words found in the book of Ecclesiastes. In that book Solomon, the wisest of men, teaches us many lessons about time and how we should use it. When there are times that we say, “I don’t have anything to do,” we may turn to that book in the Bible and read what Solomon has said about the time we have and how we should make use of it.

Again there are a number of letters to answer —
Irene Verhey
Your letter is the first one, Irene. Are we spelling your last name correctly or should we be using the “ij?” A concordance is certainly a useful tool. Just think what a lot of work was necessary to make one, since it was written before the time of computers. Our congratulations to your sister.
Sharon Hanenberg
Welcome to the Bible quiz, Sharon. It is always good to see new names appear on the list. I am not quite sure where West Milford is located, so perhaps you will have to give me a lesson on geography. We hope that we may hear from you again next month.
Hendrika Boeder
It is nice to receive letters from your penpals, Hendrika, but I’m sure it’s much nicer to meet them in person. Perhaps some day, the Lord willing, you can also pay us a visit. Have you ever travelled to Michigan? We think it is a nice place to live, but you must think the same about Ontario.
Suzanne Van Den Bosch
Can you converse with your visitor in the Dutch language, Suzanne? Or does he know English? Language often presents problems when travelling to other countries, so it is good when we have a knowledge of several languages. Do you learn other languages at school? Congratulations on your becoming an aunt. Do you have other nieces or nephews?
Mary Bosch
Do you enjoy school, Mary? We must appreciate the education which we receive, and especially so when it is at a school where the Bible is given its rightful place. The psalmist tells us that God’s Word is a light unto his path, and we pray that this may also be so for many boys and girls today.
Lisa De Bruin
It was nice to meet you at your grandparents’ home, Lisa. When we arrived home, we found your letter waiting for us. It is nice to have a break from school during the summer months, but I think most boys and girls are quite happy to be back in school at the end of the summer. It’s just not possible to have holidays all the time.
Karin Bertram
Did your aunt’s operation turn out well, Karin? In all parts of the world we see that sickness and difficulties are to be found, and cannot be escaped. Doctors, nurses, and hospitals then become necessary, but we know too that the Lord must bless their efforts and the medicine if it will be of benefit for us.
Trevor Aleman
9000 strawberry plants sure seems like a lot, Trevor, but certainly should produce lots of berries. We hope that you may succeed in becoming a teacher. What area of teaching are you thinking of? We hope that you may receive wisdom from above. Solomon tells us about this wisdom in his book of Proverbs.
Aline Bosch
How old is your grandmother, Aline? Especially for us who are somewhat older, the years seem to fly by. You asked why the pronouns referring to God and the Lord Jesus are not capitalized in the Bible. It seems that the Dutch Bible has done so, but not the English Bible. I think it is a good custom to do so.
Many thanks again to all boys and girls for their answers to the quiz. As school has now begun for most of you, we wish you well in your studies, but hope that God’s Word may be searched above all other books, so that, with the Lord’s blessing, true wisdom may be found.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
