The Bible
Laban did not find the images, so he went back to Jacob. Jacob was very angry with him.
“What have I done to you,” Jacob asked, “to make you so angry with me? I’ve worked for you so many years and never did anything wrong against you!”
Laban felt a bit sorry for his bad thoughts, so he made a covenant with Jacob. Do you remember what a covenant is? That means they made promises to each other. Laban put up a pile of rocks, and said that he would not go past the rocks to hurt Jacob and Jacob would not go past the rocks to hurt him. Laban also asked Jacob to be a good father and husband.
Jacob said he would keep his part of the covenant, and Laban said he would keep his part. Then, after a meal and a good night’s rest, Laban left for his home.
God had helped Jacob, so that all things went well with Laban. But— now Jacob had a new worry. He had to go home and meet Esau again!
Remember how much Esau hated his twin because he took the birthright? And do you remember how he had promised to kill Jacob for doing this to him? Well, now Jacob had to meet him again. I think Jacob was very scared, don’t you? How would Esau act towards him? But Jacob had a God to go to for help. I’m sure Jacob spent many moments praying for God’s help in the days ahead.

Do you write letters to anyone? Maybe your Grandma and Grandpa live far away from you, and you try to write them letters telling them what has happened to you. Maybe you have a brother or sister who is married, and you like to write to them once in a while.
Well, God has written us a letter, too. God has written us a letter telling us all about Himself. Do you know what this letter is? We call it the Bible.
I’m sure you’ve seen the Bible, haven’t you! Where do you keep most of your Bibles—in the bookcase, dusty and unused? Or do you keep one by your bedside where you can read it every night?
Have you heard of Mary Jones? Mary was a girl who loved God, but she was poor. She did not have any Bibles in her house! How is that possible, you say; we have five or six in our house! Well, back in Mary’s day Bibles were very scarce. God has blessed us very much by giving us so many copies of His Word. Mary Jones worked and worked and worked and finally she was able to have a Bible! How happy she was!
I also read a story about some other people who wanted a Bible. They were dirty, tattered, and poor. They came to a man’s house asking for work. They wanted to shovel the snow for him all winter so that they might earn money for a Bible! There was no Bible in their whole town!
The man was a minister, and had some extra Bibles. So he gave them a brand new one without making them do any work. The people couldn’t believe it! “We have to pay you for this Bible,” they cried. “We must pay you for this wonderful gift!”
But the minister said no. “You take it home and read it,” he said, “and I will be happy.” How thrilled the people were!
A few days later the minister brought in his mail, and there was a letter from the town who had wanted a Bible! It was a “thank you” for the Bible he had given them! They were just so excited! In fact, do you know what they did? There were thirty people in the town, so they had carefully cut the Bible into thirty parts so that they could each have a part of it and trade back and forth!
Do we love our Bible that much?
The Bible tells us all about God. It tells us God’s rules for us. It tells us how very wicked and bad we are, but it tells us something else, too. It tells us that God will give a clean heart to those who truly ask Him for one! So we can say that the Bible is a mirror—to show us how bad we really look to Him—and a map—to show us the way to God!
How often do we read our Bible? “It’s too hard for me to read,” you say. “I don’t understand it”
Sure, there are parts that are hard for early readers to read, but there are some easy parts! In fact, I’ve heard about some old people who had never learned to read, who used the Bible to learn their ABCs!
Here are some easy chapters for children to read:
Most of the Psalms
Genesis 1-4
Exodus 20
Ecdesiastes 3:1-8
Many chapters in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John
