BIBLE QUIZ

10 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

It is in the month of March that we in our congregations come together for Prayer Day services. In is the time of the year when the seed is planted in the ground for the various crops. Although man can plant and water the seed, it is God who gives the increase. We can read this in God’s Word. Therefore we must turn to Him in prayer for His blessing upon these labors.

But is this the only reason to come before Him in prayer? Since there are many of us who do no planting, is there still a need for a Prayer Day service? Indeed there is. We are dependent upon the Lord when we are in His house, or at school, at home, at work, or wherever we may be. Not only at times of sickness and sorrow and trouble, but also in healthy and prosperous days we must look to the Lord for help and blessings. Prayer is necessary for us at all times.

Prayer must be made to God only, since He alone is able to supply us with that which we need. We know that heathen nations of the past and of the present bow before gods of wood and stone, or even of gold and silver. But our Bible tells us that they cannot hear, nor see, nor speak. Think only of the priests of Baal in the time of Elijah — how they cried to their god, but they received no answer. There are many such examples in God’s Word, and many today pray to an unknown God. Therefore we must ask the Lord to show us who He is.

We must also pray for a new heart, a heart to fear Him, to serve Him, and to walk in His ways, for we come into the world with sinful hearts, because of our fall in Paradise. Our stony hearts must be taken away and we be given hearts of flesh. That too we do not have and cannot obtain of ourselves. We must pray for all of our daily needs, since these all come from His hand. The needs of others should also concern us, and since the Lord is everywhere present and has all things under His control, it is to Him alone that we must bring these needs. When we think of all this, then we must say that there is much reason for a Prayer Day. But then there is also reason for prayer every day, for to whom else can we bring all our needs?

Our quiz this month is about prayer, and the first letters of the answers will spell out five words found in Psalm 65. The Bible gives us instruction for prayer, many examples of answered prayers, but also the commands and invitations of the Lord to call upon Him in prayer. May we together be drawn unto Him with our needs for soul and body for time and for eternity.

Again there are letters to answer —

Justus Verheij

Justus, we will first of all welcome you to the Bible Quiz. We may think of all the boys and girls as “Bible-searchers,” and it is our prayer that it may not only be in the mind, but that the Lord might also bring it in the hearts of each of us. That creek sounds to me like quite a stream. How wide is it?

Aline Bosch

Thanks for the card which you sent us, Aline. Pictures of New Zealand certainly show it to be a beautiful country with lots of scenery. However, as we travel from place to place, we are always reminded that sin also came into a most beautiful world, bringing the thorns and thistles which are spoken of in Genesis 3.

Stepanie Geuze

Welcome also to you, Stephanie. It is always nice to see new names added to the list. I had to look the word “paddock” up in the dictionary, since I wasn’t quite sure what it meant. But now I know. No matter how old we become, there is always so much to learn, but this is especially true of the truths of God’s Word.

Mary Bosch

Since we are now having winter here, a walk on the beach sounds real nice, Mary, especially when we look at the post card which you sent us. Are there lots of sea shells and pretty stones to be found on the beach? We were wondering if this was the Pacific Ocean which is shown, or whether it was off the western side of New Zealand.

Karin Bertram

Thank you for the picture, Karin. It was nice to see your family. It is very evident that the twins are growing rapidly. It seems you are keeping quite busy during your holidays. Soon it will be time for school again, if all is well. As the years fly past, we see what is meant when the Bible speaks of our life as of a tale that is told.

Irene Verheij

I see in your letter, Irene, that school already began again early in February. Holidays especially seem to fly past rapidly. Congratulations to your sister and her husband. Do you like to attend weddings? It is usually a happy moment for bride and groom, but this is true also for the families involved. It is an institution of the Lord at the time of creation.

Eric Bosch

All the letters this month are from New Zealand, Eric. The boys and girls in your country are certainly faithful in writing letters. How is your grandpa now? We hope that he may be somewhat improved. Did you manage to stay dry in the canoe? Perhaps your dad is quite expert in canoeing, and that certainly makes a big difference.

This again concludes our letters for this month, but the subject matter of our quiz, the need for prayer, stays with us day after day, moment by moment. In all that we do, in all that we are, may we always be reminded of this. We hope to hear from all of you again next month.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

Alas! and did my Saviour bleed?
And did my Sovereign die?
Would He devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

Thy body slain, sweet Jesus, thine,
And bathed in its own blood;
While all exposed to wrath divine
The glorious Sufferer stood.

Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree?
Amazing pity! grace unknown!
And love beyond degree.

Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut His glories in,
When God, the mighty Maker, died
For man, the creature’s sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face,
While His dear cross appears;
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes in tears.
