Prayers For Children: Grades 5-8 Ask...
I often find it hard to know what to pray. So often my mind wanders when I try to pray in the morning and at night. When we eat, I always pray the same thing. My Dad said I should write you. Can you help me by writing out some prayers for me to use? —a fifth grader
You are not the only person asking me this question. In the past year, several parents have written or called with the same concern. Before I give some samples of possible prayers, most of which have been formed by others, let me say two things:
First, please remember that even when you are young, you should try as much as possible to pray in your own words. Perhaps you can use some of the following suggested prayers to help you begin praying, but before you say “amen,” try to add something in your own words — especially when you are by yourself in the morning after you get up and in the evening when you go to bed. If nothing comes to your mind, you might then pray, “Lord, teach me to pray.”
Secondly, let us not forget that the Lord Jesus taught His disciples what has been called “the perfect prayer.” Can you find it in Matthew 6 and in Luke 11?
Prayers for children in the morning
Lord, I thank Thee for this day,
Guide and lead me in Thy way.
Teach me, Lord, Thy truth to know
That in Thy path I may go. Amen.
Now I wake to see the light,
Tis God who kept me through the night.
And now I lift my voice to pray,
That God will keep me through the day. Amen.
Prayers for children before meals
Lord, bless this food and drink to my body,
And Thy Word to my soul,
For Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Lord, bless this food, and grant that we
May thankful for Thy mercies be.
Teach us to know by whom we’re fed;
Bless us with Christ, the living Bread. Amen.
Prayers for children after meals
Lord, I thank Thee for this food and drink.
May the strength I receive from it be used to Thy glory.
Bless also Thy Word to my soul, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Most merciful God, Thy name be praised and thanked for all these loving gifts Thou hast so graciously bestowed upon us again. Wilt Thou further feed our souls with the Bread of Life, and strengthen our hearts through Thy grace, that our life and death might be to the glory and honor of Thy most holy Name. Amen.
Oh Lord, with heartfelt thanks we come to Thee, to acknowledge Thee for the abundance of this life’s necessities. While many eat their bread in grief and sorrow, Thou hast fed us kindly in an abundant measure. Oh, grant that our souls may not cleave to the things of this perishing world, that our life may be in the path of Thy commandments, and in the end may we have everlasting life with Thee. Amen.
Prayer for children in the evening
Now I lay me down to sleep;
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to keep.
If I should die before I wake,
I pray Thee, Lord, my soul to take.
If I should live for other days,
I pray Thee, Lord, to guide my ways.
Lord, please give me a new heart,
Be merciful to me, a sinner,
And teach me how to pray, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.
Prayer for young and old
Lord, give me grace to see my need of grace,
Give me grace to ask for grace.
Give me grace to use Thy grace.
Give me grace to lay all the glory of grace
at Thy feet, for Christ’s sake. Amen.

Avond gebed
Ik ga slapen, ik ben moe;
’k Sluit mijn beide oogjes toe.
Heere, houdt ook deze nacht,
Over mij getrouw de wacht.
’t Boze dat ik heb gedaan,
Zie het Heere toch niet aan;
Schoon mijn zonden vele zijn;
Maak om Jezus wil mij rein. Amen.
