BIBLEQUIZ

13 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again this month we have a crossword puzzle for you. It has been quite some time since our last one, so perhaps you have been looking for one. As in the past, the quiz is based on one of the Lord’s Days of the Heidelberg Catechism. This month it is Lord’s Day 12, and therefore many of the answers will be found in the texts shown with that Lord’s Day in the back of your Psalter. If you will recall, those which make use of one of those texts are marked with an asterisk (*). This should already give you quite a few clues in arriving at the answers.

The 12th Lord’s Day teaches us about the names “Christ” and “Christian.” The name Christ is well-known to us who have been taught about God’s Word, since it appears many times in the Bible, but only in the New Testament. However, the Old Testament does mention the Hebrew name Messiah, which means the same thing. The meaning of Christ or Messiah is “anointed,” and He is “The Anointed One.”

The Old Testament often tells us about anointing to the offices of prophets, priests, and kings among the children of Israel. The catechism explains that Christ was anointed in a special way to all three offices. However, in speaking about Him and all those others mentioned in the Old Testament, we must always remember that Christ was perfectly sinless, while all others were sinful men. What a great difference this is! The reason for Christ’s anointment to these offices is to give complete salvation to a people given Him by the Father. His work is, as His name Jesus teaches us, to save His people from their sins.

As we hear especially at this time of the year, when He came into the world, there was no room for Him in the inn, and there was little need for Him. Only a few people were given to realize who He was. The Lord must teach us this also, for otherwise we too have no room for Him and no need of Him. May we together be taught to confess with the centurion, “Lord, we are not worthy that Thou come under our roof,” but then also to plead that He may heal our sad condition of sin and unbelief. Then He will be also for us the true “Anointed One.”

Again there are letters to be answered: Jolene Slingerland

How large is the addition being built onto your school, Jolene? Probably you will soon be moving into it. Looking at our schools, we may see how richly the Lord has blessed us in providing them for our young people. It must also be our prayer that the instruction given will also be for a blessing unto them.

Stefanie Grisnich

It certainly was nice to hear from you, Stefanie. Yes, your teacher’s father is my cousin. I don’t remember your visit, but hopefully, the Lord willing, you can pay us a visit again. Do you like to travel? We had four daughters, but since they are all married, they no longer live at home. We now have fourteen grandchildren.

Kelly-Anne and Rachael Ziegler

Thanks for another welcome letter. Yes, the leaves in the fall are so colorful, but then they soon fall to the ground. Do you have lots of leaves in your yard to rake? It is always amazing to see the huge piles of leaves which are gathered up under the trees. We cannot begin to count them, and could not even guess how many there are on a tree. Or can you take a guess?

Willetta Les

Yes, Willetta, I see that the last question in the September quiz was left off by mistake. Time and again we see mistakes creep in, even though we try so hard not to make them. We also sometimes look at slides of the “olden days,” but then we soon realize that we are no longer young. We too must pray, whether we are young or old, “Lord, teach me to number my days.”

Aline Bosch

You found quite a few occasions in the Bible where letters were written, Aline. They didn’t have the mail service which we have today, and I’m sure your letters which cross the ocean would not arrive so quickly, but their letters still served the same purpose, that is, to carry news and messages from one place to another.

Karin Bertram

I think trampolines are for young people, Karin. Perhaps your dad will agree with that. We were saddened to hear that Mr. Groen had passed away. No doubt he will be greatly missed in your congregation. We recently read an article about him in a Dutch newspaper.

Irene Verheij

We are quite well, Irene. It seems that daylight savings time is worldwide, although I would assume that there are places that have standard time the entire year. Names of places usually have a story behind them, but they of course date back many years. We find this also true in the Bible, since certain places received their name because of that which took place there.

Jolene Boesterd

Do you hear from your friend in Japan, Jolene? We have never had a Japanese visitor in our home that I can recall. When we look around, especially in large cities, we see people of all nationalities, but we also know that all are descendants of Adam and Eve, all have a soul, and all are travellers to eternity with us.

Eric Bosch

Do you find it difficult to get up so early in the morning for milking and feeding the calves, Eric? In the Bible we can also read of certain things which took place early in the morning. Can you think of some examples? For example, mention is made of Job and how he rose early in the morning to seek the blessing of the Lord for his sons and daughters.

Leanne Les

We hope that you succeed in your hopes of becoming a teacher, Leanne. Much can happen to change our plans, since we do not know what tomorrow can bring upon us. However, the need for teachers in our schools remains, and we are always glad to see young people desire this occupation. I assume you were happy with the crossword puzzle this month.

Justus Verheij

Would you like to make a long journey by boat, Justus? Since travelling by airplane has become so common, not many people take long trips across the ocean by boat. Perhaps some day you can take a trip with him. Although there are dangers involved, we must always be reminded that we must be protected wherever we are, even in our own homes.

Mary Bosch

I suppose your weather has warmed up considerably by this time, Mary. Are you still having lots of rain? Our summer this year was quite cool, and therefore many farmers had problems with crops which suffered because of lack of warm weather. Man would like to be able to control the weather, but we are made aware that it is the Lord who rules over it.

Daniel Geuze

Your letter is the last one this time, Daniel. Do you find science quite interesting? The more we learn about the world around us, the more we begin to see the wonders of creation. Although men are given much wisdom in these days regarding these things, they are made to realize time and again that they know so little. Truly, the wisdom of God is unfathomable, also in the things of nature.

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to our quiz. Since this is the last quiz for this year, it is our wish and prayer that we may be given to see and acknowledge the blessings of the Lord during this year, but that we may also be spared to enter the new year and be favored with the Lord’s blessing for both body and soul.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

Rules for Daily Life

Begin the day with God;
Kneel down to Him in prayer;
Lift up thy heart to His abode,
And seek His love to share.

Open the Book of God,
And read a portion there;
That it may hallow all thy thoughts,
And sweeten all thy care.

Go through the day with God;
Whate’er thy work may be:
Where’er thou art — at home, abroad,
He still is near to thee.

Converse in mind with God;
Thy spirit heavenward raise;
Acknowledge every good bestowed,
And offer grateful praise.

Conclude the day with God;
Thy sins to Him confess;
Trust in the Lord’s atoning blood,
And plead His righteousness.

Lie down at night with God,
Who gives His servant sleep:
And when thou tread’st the vale of death,
He will thee guard and keep.
