BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

This month we again have a crossword puzzle for you, and it relates to the 13th Lord’s Day of the Heidelberg Catechism. As usual, the texts listed in the back of the Psalter for this Lord’s Day are used, and those questions will be marked with an asterisk (*).

As did the two previous Lord’s Days, the 13th Lord’s Day speaks to us about the Son of God. He is that unspeakable gift of the Father to His people, and all the words which are written about Him fall far short in describing Him. The bride in the Song of Solomon also found this to be true, and when words failed, could only say, “He is altogether lovely.”

That the Lord Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father and the Holy Ghost, has been and is denied by many people, even though God’s Word clearly teaches this. There is much reason to be afraid of the false teachings which are found in the world today, because they do present many arguments to us, but always based on human understanding. People do not want to know of an infinite, incomprehensible, triune God. God Himself must teach us who He is, just as He taught Job and many others in the Old Testament and Saul of Tarsus in the New Testament.

As Saul travelled to Damascus to work destruction in the church of God, we find that he was stopped in the way, and he cried out that meaningful question, “Who art Thou, Lord?” It is our hope that many boys and girls, yes, adults also, may learn that prayer with him.

Again there are letters to answer —

Willetta Les

Your letter is the first one this month, Willetta. Do you have relatives in Michigan and Ontario? When the electricity is off, we suddenly realize how much we depend upon it. Usually we make use of it without giving it any thought. Congratulations belatedly on your birthday.

Melanie Kaat

It was nice to hear that Bible is your favorite subject in school, Melanie. We hope it may be so even after you have finished your schooling. When we think of those who do not have Bibles in their homes, we must realize what a great privilege we do have. Some day, D.V., we may try a different kind of quiz, but it has to be one which makes you use your Bibles.

Aline Bosch

My birthday is the same as your mother’s, Aline. You do have a lot of family birthdays in a short time. How nice that your grandmother and uncle can pay you a visit. Have they been to visit you before? Since it is such a long trip, it doesn’t happen as often as you would like, I’m sure of that.

Karin Bertram

Thanks for the picture, Karin. The twins have certainly grown. They look like they enjoy having their picture taken. Do you have quite a large fish tank? Even in the many varieties of fish we may see the wonder of the creation and the greatness of the Creator. The poet sang, “O who can show His glory forth, or utter all His praise?”

Sheila Kaat

Yes, Sheila, whether we are old or young, we need that best gift of all, which is a heart to fear the Lord and to walk in His ways. We pray that all our young friends may feel their need for this gift and may bring that need unto the Lord. I’m sure the old people in the nursing home are always happy to see visitors, since their days can be very lonely.

Niki Bertram

It was nice to hear from you, Niki. Did you enjoy your stay in the cabin during your holidays? What did you do during the day while you were there? At the moment we have a fair amount of snow on the ground, which means that we spend more time indoors. Do write again, and be sure to give our greetings to your parents.

Mary Bosch

Again this month there were two answers sent in without a name given, so it does happen at times, Mary. It probably also takes place at school when papers are turned in to the teacher. Since we receive quite a few, it is practically impossible to guess whose it might be unless it is with others in the same family. Are you enjoying your holidays?

Jeremy Bertram

Did you catch any fish, Jeremy? In the Bible we read several times about fish being caught, both in a net and with a hook and line. How many cows are you milking each time? I suppose it means getting up early in the morning, doesn’t it? I’m sure another helping hand makes the job go more quickly.

Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers again this month, and also for the seasons greetings sent to us. As we proceed into this year, may we continually pray for the Lord’s blessings in the studying of His Word. We need the light of the Spirit upon it, just as did the Ethiopian eunuch travelling along the highway to His home.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

Trust in God

Every joy or trial
Falleth from above,
Traced upon our dial
By the Sun of Love:
We may trust Him fully
All for us to do.
They who trust Him wholly
Find Him wholly true.
Stayed upon Jehovah,
Hearts are fully blest,
Finding, as He promised,
Perfect peace and rest.

THE DYING TESTIMONY OF A LITTLE BOY

John Sim, a dear little boy, was carried away by consumption. His childlike heart seemed to be filled with joy about seeing Jesus. His simple prattle, mingled with deep questionings, arrested not only his young companions but pierced the hearts of some careless sinners who heard him, and greatly refreshed the faith of God’s dear people. It was the very pathos of song to hear the weak quiver of his dying voice sing out:

“I lay my sins on Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God.”

Shortly before his decease he said to his parents: “I am going soon to be with Jesus; but I sometimes fear that I may not see you there.” “Why so, my child?” said his weeping mother. “Because,” he answered, “If you were set upon going to heaven and seeing Jesus there, you would pray about it, and sing about it; you would talk about Jesus to others, and tell them of that happy meeting with Him in glory. All this my dear Sabbath School teacher has taught me, and she will meet me there. Now why did not you, my father and mother, tell me all these things about Jesus, if you are going to meet Him too?”

One day an aunt from the country visited his mother, and their talk ran in channels for which the child no longer felt any interest. On my sitting down beside him, he said: “Sit down and talk to me about Jesus; I am tired of hearing so much talk about everything else but Jesus; I am going soon to be with Him. Oh, do tell me everything you know or have ever heard about Jesus, the spotless Lamb of God!”

At last the child literally longed to be away, not for rest, or freedom from pain — for of that he had very little — but, as he himself always put it: “To see Jesus.”

The Anvil — God’s Word

Last eve I passed beside
a blacksmith’s door,
And heard the anvil ring
the vesper chime;
Then, looking in, I saw
upon the floor
Old hammers, worn
with beating years of time.

“How many anvils
have you had,” said I,
“To wear and batter
all these hammers so?”
“Just one,” said he, and then,
with twinkling eye,
“The anvil wears the hammers
out, you know.”

And so, thought I,
the anvil of God’s Word,
For ages skeptic blows
have beat upon;
Yet, though the noise
of falling blows was heard,
The anvil is unharmed

the hammers gone.
