BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

During the month of March there is a special day set apart by the church for the purpose of prayer. Since March also brings to us the first day of spring, we are reminded then of the special need for the Lord’s blessing in the growing season of the year. If the plantings of the seeds in the fields and gardens do not produce their expected crops, hunger and famine would soon be the result. We see this taking place in foreign countries, but it could also happen here at home.

But who can cause a seed to germinate, to sprout, and to bring forth fruit? Many years ago the apostle said that one can plant and another can water, but that it is God who must give the increase. Therefore how necessary it is to turn unto the Lord at this time of the year for His blessing upon our efforts. Even though we are not actually planting seeds, we need the blessing of the Lord in anything that we do if it is to be to our benefit.

Thus we see so clearly the need of prayer. Prayer speaks of need. Since there are always needs, prayer also is always necessary. At no time of the day and at no time during the night are we without needs, and therefore it is good to set apart a time of prayer, not only on a special day of the year, but also each day of the year. Do we do that?

In Acts 4 we read that Peter and John went up to the temple at the hour of prayer, and in the book of Daniel it is told us how he prayed three set times each day. Do we also have a time for prayer? God is so worthy to be served, but He also invites our prayers, saying, “Open wide thy mouth, and I will fill it.” Therefore a praying people is also a blessed people, for the Lord has promised it.

The catechism tells us that we are to ask in prayer for all things necessary for soul and body. In the Bible we see time and again the many needs which were brought before the Lord. This will be seen in the answers to our quiz this month. As we search out these answers, we will notice that the Lord has never failed to answer the cry of the needy who call upon Him. It is our prayer that we together may become such needy ones before Him.

The first letters of the answers will spell out the cry heard in Luke 17, a cry which consisted of only six words.

Again there are some letters to answer —

Irene Verheij

We are quite well, Irene. Thank you for the card. The scenery in your country is certainly very beautiful. We have to travel quite a distance from Michigan in order to see snow-covered mountains. To us New Zealand is a far country, but it would be nice to pay you a visit someday. How many miles did you travel on your holiday?

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

I’m sure it is nice to be situated in your new home, Suzanne. You wrote that it was very hot. Here they are predicting at least six inches of snow tonight, so we are experiencing just the opposite kind of weather. We are looking forward to spring, but you will soon have your winter weather. Does your brother plan to return to Holland?

Justus Verheij

What did you like best about your trip, Justus? No doubt there are many nice things, so it is probably not easy to pick out what you liked best. According to the map which Irene sent, you are never very far from the ocean. Are you happy to be back in school again? It of course means that your summer holidays are past.

Mamie De Boer

Welcome to the Bible quiz, Mamie. There is always room for more. As we look back over the list of names in the past, we see how the family names are quite often the same, but the first names change. It is our hope and prayer that many boys and girls will never forget the things which they have learned, and that it may have been blessed by the Lord in their hearts.

Judith Verheij

It seems there is lots to see and do in New Zealand, Judith, because we are always hearing about new places being visited. Everywhere we go, we are reminded of the greatness of the creation. It was all created in three days, as we can read in the book of Genesis, but a whole lifetime would not permit us to see all there is to be seen.

This finishes our letters for this time. Many thanks to all the boys and girls for their replies to the quiz, and it is our hope that we may meet again next month. We see the months and seasons pass by, but we know that we too travel through from day to day as one who passes by. Older people will tell us how quickly a lifetime is spent and the end draws near. May we beg the Lord to prepare us for that day.

With love,

Your friend,
