CHRIST ON THE CROSS
“Father, forgive them
For they know not what they do”;
When Christ these words had spoken
Were they for me and you?
“When entering Thy kingdom,
Remember me, oh Lord”;
“Today thou shalt be with Me,”
The thief had been restored.
“Woman, behold thy son,
Son, behold thy mother”;
Does Christ so care for you?
Is He your Elder Brother?
“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani,”
The suff’ring Savior cried;
When nailed upon the cross,
God’s justice satisfied.
He cried aloud, “I thirst”
But no reliëf received;
And likewise shall it be with those
Who ne’er in Christ believed.
Christ then cried, “It is finished”;
Atonement had been made
For those who lost God’s image
And from His precepts strayed.
“Father, into Thy hands
My Spirit I commit”;
God’s people now were ransomed
From condemnation’s pit
The work was now accomplished
God gave His Son to do;
And those who plead Christ’s merits
A triune God shall view.
Oh, hasten dear Lord Jesus
Come skipping o’er the hills;
Deliver me from all my foes
And save me from all ills.
Oh, to behold Christ’s glory
When time shall be no more;
And without sin to praise Him
On heaven’s eternal shore!
