BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

Again we have a crossword puzzle this month, and this time it is based upon Lord’s Day 15 of the Heidelberg Catechism. As usual, you will find many of the answers in those texts which are listed with Lord’s Day 15 in back of your Psalter. Those in which these texts are used are marked with an asterisk (*).

Lord’s Day 15 speaks to us about the suffering of the Lord Jesus while here on earth. There is much to tell about His life, since He has spoken and taught many things. He went about doing good to many people, comforting, helping, and healing them. He even raised some from the dead. However, this Lord’s Day points only to His suffering.

This suffering, we are told, took place thoughout His entire lifetime. We hear of this in church especially in the weeks before Good Friday and Easter, but it must not be forgotten at other times of the year, since it was so necessary for the good of His church and people. Much suffering is taking place every day in the world around us. We see this if we visit hospitals and nursing homes, or other places of care. But none of this can be compared to the suffering of the Lord Jesus in His human nature while upon this earth.

His suffering was in body and soul. You have been taught that we too were created with both body and soul. The punishment for sin is in both body and soul, and the Lord Jesus willingly took this punishment upon Himself in the place of His people. What a wonder it must be that the Son of God left behind the glories of heaven to suffer and die for a people who have turned their back upon God! That is what we did in Paradise. Although He had no sin, He bore the punishment of sin for those who are His. It will be a reason for them to sing His praises and show Him honor throughout eternity.

We also find the name Pontius Pilate mentioned here. He is also remembered, but in a very different way. Who was Pontius Pilate? He was the Roman governor who declared the Lord Jesus to be innocent, but yet condemned Him to death. It was God’s way, but Pilate is always remembered here for his wickedness in judgment. How true are the words of Solomon in the book of Proverbs, “The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall rot.”

As we work through this quiz, we hope that we may give much thought to the things spoken of in this Lord’s Day. The Lord Jesus took upon Himself the sins of His people and the curse upon sin so that a cursed people might receive a blessing. It must be our prayer that we also may learn to understand the wonder of it, and therefore flee from sin, bowing before Him in true thankfulness.

Again there are letters to answer —

Suzanne Van Den Bosch

Your letter is on top, Suzanne, so we will start with a letter to you. How many days off from school do you have at the Easter holidays? Everyone enjoys time off, whether it is from work or from school. But it always seems that those days pass by so quickly, even more quickly than school days.

Mary Bosch

Did Colin’s finger survive, Mary? Accidents can happen so quickly, especially with power tools. Do you speak a lot of Dutch in your home? Usually the more you use it, the easier it is, but when it is neglected for long periods of time, we find that we have problems in speaking it.

Krista Huisman

We are quite well, Krista. Congratulations to your grandmother and to you for her birthday. She has exceeded the age of those whom the Bible calls the very strong. Birthdays are always reminders to us that time flies away. In the Psalms Moses prayed to be taught to count his days. Do you know in which psalm this is to be found?

Daniel Geuze

Where did you get your pet deer, Daniel? Is he quite timid, or is he quite accustomed to you? We read of deer in the Bible also, but then more often under the name hart or hind. Can you think of some examples from Scripture? We at times see deer in our back yard, but, as you say, they can run very fast.

Rita De Vos

I think your little brother wanted to help with the Bible quiz, Rita. How old is he? Are you having nice weather in Holland? Is H. I. Ambacht quite a large city, or is it just a little village? I can’t recall ever being there, although I do remember seeing signs along the highway.

Aline Bosch

What kind of trees are you planting, Aline? It usually takes a number of years for a tree to grow. But afterwards it is surprising how large they can be. The Bible speaks about different kinds of trees, but also uses trees quite often as examples. I am sure you will know of some.

Jocelyn Den Hertog

Yes, Jocelyn, rain is certainly needed to make things grow. We can plant many things in our yard and gardens, but if they do not receive water, they soon wither away. Do you have a garden? Rabbits can be a nuisance for those who have gardens, but no doubt your bunny will not have the possibility to get into the garden. Sorry about that mistake in your name as it was listed.

Karin Bertram

Did everyone at school get the chicken pox, Karin? It is not pleasant to be sick, but it is a disease that most boys and girls have at some time. Every sickness is also a reminder to us of sin, since there was no sickness or diseases before the fall in Paradise. In the Bible we read how time and again those who were sick were brought to the Lord Jesus, and that we must still do.

William Bosch

It was nice to hear from you, William. Do you get up early to help with the milking? It is always nice when we can visit the farm and watch the chores being done, but those who live on a farm know that it is something that has to be done every day. Do you like farming? We find that it is mentioned already at the very beginning of the Bible.

Jeremy Bertram

Did you catch any opossums, Jeremy? We have been having problems with woodchucks, and have caught two so far. There are also opossums, but they do not seem to cause any problems for us. We hope you are feeling better again, so that you can be back in school again. Or would you rather be home?

Elizabeth Vandenberg

We don’t mark all the quiz answers received, Elizabeth. As you say, it would take a tremendous amount of time, and then we would probably have to send them back also. There are a variety of ages among those who answer, and I’m sure that everyone is doing their best.

Many thanks again to all the boys and girls for their answers to the quiz. As summer is now here, we hope you will also find time to be busy with your Bibles, just as you do at school. Above all, we pray that the Lord may guide and protect you wherever you may be or go, blessing His Word to your souls. We look forward to hearing from you.

With love,

Your friend,

WHAT SHALL IT PROFIT?

A young university graduate came to live in a village where a faithful minister preached. The young man was renowned for his cleverness, especially in mathematics.

Before long the minister and the scholar met. Before they parted the minister said, “I have heard that you are well-known for your mathematical skill. I have a problem I would like you to solve.”

“What is it?” eagerly replied the young man.

Solemnly the minister answered, “What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

The text stuck. In vain did the young man try to shake it off — in his work, in pleasure, in studying — and at length his whole life was graciously changed.
