BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
The summer months are with us again, which means you are spending your days differently than when at school. The rules, regulations, and schedules which you had to keep when at school are no longer needed. The bell doesn’t ring to tell you when you must be at your desk, nor are the weekly tests coming up for which you have to study. No doubt your parents do have rules and regulations, and certain chores for you to do, but I’m sure that is probably true throughout the entire year.
In order for people to live together in an orderly way, there must be rules and regulations, for otherwise everything would be in confusion. Think what would happen if people were to live without regard for others. That is why our governmental bodies make laws, such as traffic laws for speeding, etc., property laws, tax laws, noise laws, etc. These laws are to be found in almost every part of the world, and are made by cities, villages, counties, states, and also nations. What a lot of laws have been made covering all aspects of our lives!
Are all these laws always obeyed? We know they are not. Just by reading the newspapers we can quickly see how they are broken every day. Is it only other people who are breaking these laws? I don’t think so. We too, even as boys and girls, often do that which is against the rules given us by those who have authority over us. Or don’t you agree?
Laws, or rules and regulations, have always been in existence. Even in Paradise a rule was given to Adam and Eve, “Thou shalt not eat of that tree.” How soon it was broken! Since that time man continues to be disobedient in many ways. Above all the man-made laws, there is the law of God, the ten commandments. But God’s Word tells us that also that law is broken day after day. It tells us that we are not able to do any good and are inclined to all wickedness, unless God brings a change within. We need a new heart, which the Lord alone can give. Even then we are told that the holiest of men in this life have only a small beginning of obedience.
How we must hang our head in shame when we think about this, since God created us so good and He is so worthy to be served and obeyed! How we must then beg the Lord for a new heart, so that we might flee from sin and seek to walk in His ways! The Lord Jesus once taught Zacchaeus, calling him down from the tree into which he had climbed, and He yet says to us also, “In Me is thy help.” May the Lord then teach us our need for Him and cause us to be seekers of Him.
The quiz this month points out to us the rules and laws of Bible times. You will find that the first letters of the answers spell out eight words found in Psalm 78.

And now to answer the letters which we have received —
Marian Vandenberg
Your letter is the first one, Marian. Did your duck eggs hatch? It seems that you like animals, since you have a duck, a kitty, and a pet lamb. The prophet Nathan spoke to David about a man who had a pet lamb. Do you know the story? Perhaps you can look it up and read it again.
William Bosch
I think that school holidays are always nice, William, even if you do not go anywhere. Did you have to travel some distance on the field-days?
You will have to tell me about them, since I don’t really know what they are. Were you glad to be back in school again afterwards, or would you rather have more holidays?
lacky Klol
Did your grandmother have a safe trip to Holland, Jacky? I’m sure she also missed you while she was there. The grandparents of some boys and girls are still living in Holland, so they don’t see each other so very often. Letters and telephone calls are just not the same as a weekly visit. Have you ever been in Holland?
Mary Bosch
As you can see in the Banner of Truth, there is need for more teachers, Mary. Does your grandmother still teach at the school? I’m sure she will tell you that it is a wonderful occupation. Be sure to give our greetings to her and your grandfather. We hope everyone is feeling better now after all the sickness you had in the family.
Nicola Bertram
How many boys and girls ride on the new school bus, Nicola? Is it a long ride for you? For you in New Zealand the weather is becoming colder, while here the warm summer weather is with us. What are you studying about at school at the present? Did you also get the chicken pox?
Eric Bosch
I guess we will have to make a trip to New Zealand to see all those nice places and things which you write about, Eric. It is always much nicer to see something firsthand, rather than read about it in a letter or in a book. It sounds like New Zealand would be a nice place to visit.
Irene Verheij
We did not have such a severe winter, Irene, which is always nice. In the courtroom you hear something of the many problems which there are in the world around us. Did you find it quite interesting? Since the real truth is not always known, the task of a judge can be very difficult. God’s Word tells us of a most righteous Judge who knows the very thoughts of our hearts.
Aline Bosch
I think boys and girls in New Zealand are good letter-writers, Aline. At least I notice quite a few this month are from New Zealand. In the Bible we also read several times about letters which were written, so it has always been a form of communication. Can you think of some examples in the Bible where letters were written?
Jeremy Bertram
How cold does the temperature get in the winter time, Jeremy? We often too quickly say, “It is too hot!” or “It is too cold!” It is good that men do not determine the weather, for I am certain if they could, it would cause many arguments. If each person had a preference, where would the solution be?
Justus Verheij
What a lot of different animals and fish live in and around the oceans, lakes, and ponds, Justus! You had quite a list of those which you had seen at the aquarium. We recently visited the aquarium in Chicago, and were amazed at all the different kinds of fish. They too are wonders of creation, and have their place and purpose given them by the Lord, the Creator of all things.
Karin Bertram
We hope the chicken pox was not too bad for you, Karin. How many days of school did you miss? I assume they sent you some homework to do so that you wouldn’t get too far behind. How are your piano lessons progressing? It takes lots of practice in order to play well, and for some boys and girls this is not always so enjoyable.
Judith Verheij
It seems you received quite a few things for your birthday, Judith, and you are already making good use of them. A birthday means another large step in your life. We are always reminded that there are not so many such steps in our life. The Bible speaks about seventy, or eighty for the very strong, and we are not certain that we shall have that many.
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers again this month. As we see the months go by, may we too be reminded how important time is, but also how quickly it passes by, and therefore use it rightly. The Lord has given us much instruction for our lives in His Word, and may we then give heed to that Word, using it every day as our perfect guide.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

THE ELEVENTH COMMANDMENT: LOVE ONE ANOTHER
At one time Archbishop Usher visited Scotland, and hearing much of the godliness of Samuel Rutherford, resolved on being a witness of it. Disguised as a pauper, on a Saturday evening, he solicited lodging for the night.
Mr. Rutherford took him in, and directed him to be seated in the kitchen. Mrs. Rutherford catechized the servants as a preparation for the Sabbath, and having asked the stranger the number of the divine commandments, he answered eleven. The good woman hastily concluded him ignorant, and said, “What a shame it is for you, a man with grey hairs, in a Christian country, not to know how many commandments there are! There is not a child six years old, in this parish, but could answer the question properly.”
Lamenting his condition, she ordered his supper, and directed a servant to show him a bed in a garret.
Mr. Rutherford having heard him at prayer, and finding out who he was, prevailed on the Archbishop to preach for him, which he agreed to do, on condition that he should not be made known. Early in the morning, Mr. Rutherford gave him a change of clothes, and afterwards introduced him to breakfast as a minister on a journey.
When in the pulpit, he announced his text — “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another”; and remarked that this might be reckoned the eleventh commandment. Mrs. Rutherford, remembering the answer she had received the night before from the stranger, was greatly astonished and humbled!

SELF-CONDEMNED
The Lord Barrington once asked Collins, the infidel writer, how it was that, though he seemed to have very little religion himself, he took so much care that his servants should attend church regularly. He replied, “To prevent their robbing or murdering me.”
To such a character, how applicable are these words, “Out of your own mouth will I judge you!”

GRATITUDE UNDER PERSECUTION
When I am persecuted and slandered, and my name is degraded, I thank God that I am not among the persecutors.
