In Memoriam
HENRY DERKSEN
On July 22, 1993, Henry Derksen, the former elder of the Waupun, Wisconsin, congregation, passed away at the age of 90 years. He had faithfully served the congregation for approximately 40 years. For him also God’s Word has become true, “Man goeth unto his long home.” May the many prayers sent upwards unto the Lord from his lips be fulfilled in the midst of family and congregation. James by inspiration wrote, “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”
May the Lord comfort the sorrowing ones, and fill the empty place in their midst with His presence.
Rev. J. Den Hoed conducted the furneral service, using the words of Hebrews 9:27-28, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many, and unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.”

CURRENT EVENTS
Two Euthanasia Cases in Canada
As reported in the Community Impact News, a doctor in Ontario received a three-year suspended sentence for giving a lethal injection to an elderly woman who had cancer. At her request, Dr. de la Rocha removed a tube which helped her to breathe. However, her condition stabilized, and she began to talk to her family. When the woman did not die, Dr. de la Rocha injected her with a fatal solution, explaining to the nurses that euthanasia “was the way of the future.” Is the slight sentencing of this case an ill foreboding of Canada’s legal response to euthanasia in the future?
The Community Impact News also reported that the Canadian Supreme Court has heard testimony in Ottawa regarding the case of Sue Rodriguez, who is requesting a physician assisted suicide. The judges have reserved their decision until a later date. Let us pray that the Supreme Court Justices will make the right judgment and not open the door to assisted suicide.
Euthanasia in Holland - Dutch Court Exonerates Doctor
The Community Impact News reported that a Dutch psychiatrist was exonerated by the Dutch court for providing a lethal dose of sleeping pills to a 50 year old women. Hilly Bosscher had said that she wanted to die after the deaths of her two children and her failed marriage. The court stated that the doctor was medically justified in helping her commit suicide. How far we have gone, as so-called “enlightened societies”, from Genesis 9:5, “And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man.”
Abortion ... Federal Benefit?
The Washington Watch reports that Hillary Clinton has told the Catholic bishops that the President intends to include abortion as part of the federally-defined standard benefit package. Consequently, every private insurance plan will be required to offer the standard benefits. President Clinton thinks this is unimportant since “most companies already pay for abortions.” It is an atrocity already that abortion is permitted in this country, but now to define it as a federally-mandated “benefit” is a rebuff to anyone whose conscience still speaks against this murderous practice.
Young Child Tax Credit Eliminated
President Clinton’s tax and spend plan was narrowly approved by the House (219-213) on May 27. The hard-won provision to give tax relief to young couples who care for their own children (the “Young Child Tax Credit”) will be wiped out if this plan passes. Also built into the tax code will be a penalty for couples who marry instead of living together out of wedlock - the married couple will stand to pay more taxes.
Voters Voice Anti-sodomy Sentiments
Grass roots voter opposition to the advancement of the sodomy (homosexual) rights agenda has recently appeared in two different states. In Anchorage, Alaska, residents registered their anger over a controversial “gay rights” ordinance for city employees by voting out most Anchorage Assembly members who approved the disputed measure. In New Mexico the residents succeeded in pressuring the state legislature to table an effort to add “sexual orientation” to New Mexico’s human rights law. Tony Olmi, executive director of New Mexico Christian Coalition, said, “From a Christian perspective, this fight brought all elements of the Christian community together.” It should not surprise us to see such wickedness surfacing so boldly - (Romans 1:24,25) “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”
Recent Supreme Court Decisions
The New American reported recently on several rulings by the Supreme Court that affected religion. The Court ruled unanimously, citing the First Amendment’s freedom of speech, that a New York school district may not exclude church groups from meeting on school property while allowing it to be used for other social, civic, and recreational reasons. In another action, the Court let stand a lower court ruling permitting student-led graduation ceremonies in Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi, although last year a divided court ruled against the delivery of prayer by outside clergy at graduation. The ACLU commented “We remain absolutely convinced that such prayers have been banned by the Supreme Court.” This might be an opening to return prayer to public schools, under present law, so long as it would be initiated by students and not staff.
Hawaiian Homosexual Marriages
The New American reports that the Supreme Court of Hawaii has ruled that the state may not be able to prohibit homosexuals from marrying. The court said recently that any state regulation that sets up limits based on sex can be defended only if the state shows that it has “compelling” reasons for doing so. Both sides in the case described the ruling as “groundbreaking”, given that no court in the land had previously gone so far. This is indeed a sad token that we are being more and more left over to self as a nation.
Messianic Jews Increase
The National and International Religion Report reports that the number of Messianic Jews (Jews professing a belief in Jesus as the promised Messiah) in Israel has increased from 2,000 in 1980 to 5,000 in 1993, according to Israel Harel, a Messianic evangelist there. Harel said that the increase is even more significant since during the same time the political and religious tensions have also increased, which factors might have been thought to decrease such a trend. However, although more than 10,000 Jews emigrate each month from Russia, Ethiopia, and Europe, the government has denied residency to some Messianic Jewish families. It may interest our readers to note that the NRC Synod in the Netherlands has given permission to explore the possibility of beginning mission work among the Jews.

Husband Starvation Case to Michigan Appeals Court
Michael Martin, 43, is mentally impaired as a result of head injuries received in a car/train accident several years ago. His wife Mary is seeking a court order permitting her to direct the removal of his feeding tube. She claims her husband objects to being maintained in a “helpless” condition. However, Mr. Martin’s mother and sister, Leeta Martin and Pat Major, are opposed, because Mr. Martin is neither terminally ill nor unconscious, and because they assert he has made many statements that he accepts his present condition and does not want to die. In 1992, Judge George A. Grieg of the Allegan County Superior Court ruled that although Mr. Martin had a “right to die”, Michigan law required refusals of treatment to be written. The ruling was appealed by Mrs. Martin and is now currently being considered by the Michigan Court of Appeals. This ruling has far reaching consequences.
Hyde Amendment Passed by Large Margin -Delays FOCA Consideration
By a surprisingly large majority, the U.S. House of Representatives once again passed the Hyde Amendment, which for twelve years has disallowed federal funding of abortions except where the mother’s life is in danger. This would seem to portend trouble for the so-called Freedom of Choice Act, which virtually eliminates all state restrictions on abortion. We urge our readers who haven’t yet contacted their two Senators and one House member about the FOCA to consider doing so immediately, asking that this legislation be voted against.
