BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Another month has passed by, and it is time again for our Bible quiz. As we work out the quiz from month to month, we learn to know many things about the Bible. For example, we learn in which part of the Bible we read about Adam and Eve, where we can read about David and Goliath, about Samuel, about Daniel, and so forth. There are many lessons to be learned from what we read, and therefore it is so good that we have the Bible and are aquainted with it.
But there is more than just stories about people who have lived many years ago. It is not just a history book, telling us about things of the past. What did the apostle Paul write to Timothy about the Bible? He spoke about its purpose and the wisdom which is to be found in it, and that only because of Him of whom it speaks.
The very first verse of the Bible mentions a name, and throughout the Bible this name is mentioned time and again. The Bible is God’s Word to us. Young people, and older ones too, may there learn “the praises of the Lord, and His strength, and His wonderful works that He hath done.”
Psalm 78 speaks of this, and tells us also the purpose that it should have for young people especially, that is, “that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.”
Boys and girls, everyone has hopes, but is our hope in God, the Triune God? The psalmist said elsewhere, “Hope thou in God,” and every day we must ask Him to draw us unto Himself. Solomon said, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.” He is the One to whom we must look for all our help. Many have found other helpers, and they then place their hope on them and in the things of this world. Are we different?
The first letters of the answers to the quiz spell out nine words which are found three times in Isaiah 45. As you work out the quiz, you will see that the same thing is said many times in different ways, but with the same meaning.

After the three young men came out of the fiery furnace, the king said, “There is no other God that can _?_ after this sort.”
A prophet came unto King_?_, saying, “Thus said the Lord, Hast thou seen all this great multitude? behold, I will deliver it into thine hand this day; and thou shaft know that I am the Lord.”
In speaking of_?_to his son, Daniel said, “They fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till he knew that the Most High God ruled in the kingdom of men.”
The Lord Jesus said unto the _?_, “It is written, Thou shaft worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shaft thou serve.”
Moses said to Pharaoh, “The_?_ shall cease, neither shall there be any more hail; that thou mayest know how that the earth is the Lord’s.”

Job answered the Lord, saying, “I know that Thou canst do _?_, and that no thought can be withholden from Thee.”
_?_ said to the spies, “For the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.”
_?_ said to his servant, “Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”
David said to Goliath, “This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand;...that all the earth may know that there is a God in_?_.”
In 2 Samuel 22 David sang, saying, “For who is God, _?_ the Lord?”
_?_ said to Elisha, “Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel.”

And we again have a few letters to answer —
IRENE VERHEIJ
Your letter is the first one, Irene. We are quite well. The weather is quite nice today in our part of the country, but others are having problems with flooding along the Mississippi River. We find time and again that the sending of rain and the withholding of rain are not under our control. How did you do in your mid-term exams?
KARIN BERTRAM
Perhaps we should list you as “Karwa” instead of Karin.
But I’m sure everyone doesn’t call you that. It was nice to hear that your uncle was going to continue with you in New Zealand, and it must be our prayer that his labors may be blessed by the Lord. There is much need for the Lord’s blessing, both in our own lives and in the lives of others.
ELIZABETH VANDENBERG
We live inside the city, Elizabeth, so we always find farm life quite interesting. Of course, we don’t really know much about all the work that there is on a farm. New Jersey is more than 700 miles from here. If you were travelling to New Jersey from Alberta by car, you could pass through Michigan on the way.
MELISSA SLINGERLAND
It seems you like most subjects in school, Melissa. One never knows how the things he has learned at school will be used in later life, and therefore we can only do our best in every subject. What is the Helen Schuler Center? Have you gotten your pig already? You will soon be quite busy with taking care of all your animals.
JUSTUS VERHEIJ
Walking is good exercise, Justus, but climbing a mountain is quite tiring. At least you worked up a good appetite. We read quite often in the Bible of mountains and of those who went up to the top of a mount. Can you think of some examples of this? Was that a picture of your dog which you sent with your letter?
MARYBOSCH
It is nice that you are keeping up your Dutch so well, Mary. There are quite a few who now wish they had done so, having had the opportunity when they were younger. Do you get any snow at all in the winter time? We wouldn’t really think it was winter if there were no snow to be seen.
JENNIFER SCHOLTEN
It was nice to hear from you, Jennifer. We still like to walk when we have the time, but I’m sure we should do it more often. With the means of transportation which we have today, we don’t walk as much as they did in the past. Is your family doing any travelling this summer?
NICOLA BERTRAM
What kind of car did you get, Nicola? It is almost impossible to get
by without a car today, and most families find that they need more than one. It was nice that Rev. Kuijt was with you for a few Sundays. He has done a lot of travelling throughout the years. Our congratulations to your aunt and uncle on their new son.
KRISTA HUISMAN
How old is your Oma, Krista? The problems of old age are mentioned in Ecclesiastes 12, but also in other places in the Bible. It is so often said that we become old before we realize it, and how true this is, although when we are young, it doesn’t seem to be true. How many sheep did you get?
ALINE BOSCH
You came up with quite a few different kinds of trees mentioned in the Bible, Aline. I think the wattle trees which you said your father had planted are probably grown only in your part of the world, since that is a new one for me. Each tree serves the purpose of its Creator, and the psalmist in Psalm 148 calls upon them to praise the Lord.
DANIEL GEUZE
We can become very attached to our pet animals, can’t we, Daniel? But they too must experience the results of our fall in Paradise. The psalmist also called upon them to praise the Lord. It is impossible to imagine what it must have been like before sin entered into the world and all was at peace.
JUDITH VERHEIJ
Do you still have to wear the collar around your neck, Judith? I’m sure that this is not so nice, but we hope that it may do some good. How quickly problems can come upon us.
Did the new baby arrive? It must always be a wonder when all is well, since it can also be so different.
JEREMY BERTRAM
I see that you have answered the question which I asked Nicola, Jeremy. That too is a strange name for me. You did well in coming up with examples of fire in the Bible. Fire can destroy much in a very short time, but we also read of the burning bush in the story of Moses. The bush was burning, but was not consumed.
ERIC BOSCH
Do you have quite a few calves, Eric? It seems you enjoyed seeing all the different types of tractors. There, too, we see a great change from former days, when all the field work was done with horses or even oxen. Can you think of an example in the Bible where plowing was being done with oxen? I see your letter was the last one this time.
Many thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz, and we hope that we may meet again next month, the Lord willing. We may bring all our needs before the Lord in prayer, for upon prayer His blessings have often been sent forth.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
