BIBLE QUIZ

9 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

The school year has begun for you, and again there are things new and different. If we stop to think about it, changes are always taking place in our lives. The seasons of the year pass by one after another, but also the months, the weeks, and the days. As they come and go, we become that much older. There are often new responsibilities, new lessons to learn, new subjects to study, new friends, new teachers, new classmates, and on and on. One day we may be healthy, a few days later are home because of sickness. It happens to us, but also to other members of our families, and so we see each day bringing forth new things.

There are times of happiness, such as when a baby is born, a young couple are joined in marriage, a birthday, an anniversary, etc. There are also days of sadness, when loved ones pass away or are taken to hospitals, nursing homes, or other places of care because of serious sicknesses.

Changes take place in our governments, where new leaders are installed, new laws are enacted, or new taxes are added. There are times of war in certain places, times when peace is again restored, times of flooding and times of drought. Prices go up and prices go down, all these indications of continual changes. We often hear the expression that we live in a changing world, and how true this is.

The Bible also tells us of many changes which have taken place since the beginning of the world. Then too there were these same things taking place which happen today. Some would have us believe that all things happen by chance, but that is not what God’s Word teaches us. In His hands are all things, and He rules over them all. Even the hearts of kings are in His hand.

However, among all the changes which take place, we are told of Him who does not change and of that which will not pass away. We sing in one of our psalters, “Heaven and earth shall pass away, changeless Thou shalt live for aye.” It is speaking of the Lord God, the Creator of heaven and earth. He is the eternal One. Since our lifetime is so short in comparison, we have no right understanding of the word eternity. The same is true of the words “for ever.” Although the grass withers and the flower fades, Isaiah writes, “The Word of our God shall stand for ever.” We could express it as endless time.

In the book of Isaiah we also read that the Lord said, “The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.” Let us then be beggars before Him that He may bring about that change in our hearts and in our lives, so that we may receive a new heart, a new spirit, a new name.

The quiz this month shows to us how changeable the lives of men are, but the first letters of the answers spell out what the Lord has said by the mouth of His prophet Malachi.

Jacob said to Rachel and Leah, “Your_?_ hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times.”

Elijah said to the people, “How long halt ye between two_?_ ? if the Lord be God, follow Him: but if Baal, then follow him.”

Joseph shaved himself, and changed his _?_, and came unto Pharaoh.

David changed his behavior before _?_, the king of Gath, and before his servants, and feigned himself mad in their hands.

The king of Babylon made_?_ king, and changed his name to Zedekiah.

Job said to his wife, “What? shall we receive good of the_?_of God, and shall we not receive evil?” _?_ king of Babylon lifted up the head of Jehoiachin out of prison, and changed his prison garments; and he did eat bread continually before him.

The Lord Jesus said to the disciples of John, “Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: the blind receive their sight and the _?_ walk.”

In Psalm 106 it is said of the children of Israel, “They changed their glory into the similitude of an_?_ that eateth grass.”

King Ahasuerus issued a decree that Vashti come no more before the king, and that her_?_ estate be given unto another that is better than she.

In Genesis 5 we find repeated eight times the words, “And he_?_.”

After_?_ was gone out into the middle court, the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Turn again, and tell Hezekiah,..I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears, behold, I will heal thee.”

When Belshazzar saw the hand and the writing on the wall, his_?_ was changed, and his thoughts troubled him.

Upon the request of the daughter of _?_, Herod was exceeding sorry; yet for his oath’s sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her.”

When his child was dead, David arose from the earth, washed and anointed himself, and changed his _?_, and came into the house of the Lord, and worshipped.

In Psalm 102 we read, “As a vesture shaft Thou change them, and they shall be changed: but Thou art the same, and Thy years shall have no end.”

Upon their refusal,_?_ was full of fury, and the form of his visage was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

When_?_ was born, the women said to Naomi, “He shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age.”

After seeing the vision of the four beasts, Daniel wrote, “My cogitations much_?_ me, and me countenance changed in me.”

Again there are letters to answerWILLIAM BOSCH

Your letter is on top, William, so we’ll start with your letter. Two-hundred twenty calves is certainly quite a few. I’m assuming that they each require a certain amount of attention. Do you also have some chores to do for them? You wrote you had some lollies. What is a lolly?

JORICA ALEMAN

It was nice to hear from you again, Jorica. Are your shingles clearing up alright? We are having rather nice weather this summer. When sunshine is minimal, we see how important the sun is for the fields and gardens. There have been people who have worshipped the sun as a god, but we know we are to worship the Creator, and not the things which were created.

ERIC BOSCH

We are not yet planning a trip to New Zealand, Eric, but if we do, we would accept your invitation. Perhaps I could even help you with some of those chores. We read about cows and their calves when the ark was sent back to Israel by the Philistines. You probably know all about the difficulty in separating the one from the other.

DANIEL GEUZE

How nice that you could make a trip to the United States and to Holland, Daniel. Was that the first time for you? I am sure that there are lots of different things to see. Did you bring along quite a bit of school work? We hope to hear more about your trip when you return home, D.V.

MARY BOSCH

We hear more often about earthquakes in different parts of the world, Mary. But they are quite frightening when you experience one. The Bible also tells of many earthquakes which have taken place. The first verse in the book of Amos speaks of an earthquake in the days of King Uzziah, and the prophet Zechariah also writes of that same earthquake. Do you know of others?

ALINE BOSCH

Letter-writing is a nice hobby, Aline. Do you have lots of pen-pals? I see that you found quite a few examples in the Bible of letters being written. It has been a means of communication for all those years. Today the telephone often takes the place of letter writing, but I think it is always nice to receive a letter.

Many thanks again, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. May the Lord bless your studies at school, so that in the future, D.V., you may use what you have learned to His honor and the good of your neighbors. We hope to hear from you again next month.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”
