Our Only Comfort
O merciful and gracious Lord,
Look down upon us, bless Thy Word;
May sinners in this place give heed,
As oft as Thou with them dost plead.
By nature we have no desire
To serve the Lord with zeal or fire;
We only wish to live in sin
And satisfy our lusts within.
And so mankind would ever live,
And ne’er ought to his Maker give;
No look or glance or any thought
To seek and serve Him as he ought.
“But God” we find shall quicken men,
And give them grace to turn from sin,
To seek the Lord while He is near,
And turn from sin to godly fear.
If in Thy Word we did not see
The words “but God,” there would not be
Peace, hope, or rest for any soul,
Not one of men would be made whole.
O Lord, we thank Thee from our heart,
The words, “but God,” do hope impart;
Although there’s much to bring us low,
The Lord Himself will grace bestow.
O Lord, come work this in our midst,
As in the time of old Thou did’st;
Exalt Thy Name, make bare Thine arm,
Give seekers rest, sinners alarm.
To all eternity we’ll praise
Thy precious Name for all Thy ways;
Though we on earth could nought but sin,
“But God,” through grace, has brought us in.
