BIBLE QUIZ

10 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

This month there is again a crossword puzzle to solve. It is based on Lord’s Day 19 of the Heidelberg Catechism, and therefore many of the answers will be found in the texts shown with that Lord’s Day in back of the Psalter. The questions in which those texts are used are marked with an asterisk (*). For some of our younger boys and girls, it may be rather difficult to complete the entire crossword. Do what you can, and send them in that way. As time goes by, you will be able to do more, and soon it will be no problem at all to do it completely. We certainly don’t want to discourage you from trying to do these quizzes.

Very few of us, if any, have ever seen a king upon his throne. Perhaps at some time we may have seen a picture of it. Especially in former days kings often had an elaborate throne. We can read of this in Bible times, particularly of Solomon. We are told that his throne was of ivory, and overlaid with gold. He also had a footstool of gold. Six steps led up to the throne, with the statues of lions on both sides of each step, thus twelve lions in all. On either side of the throne there was also the statue of a lion. The Bible tells us that there was no throne to be compared to it. It must have been a magnificent sight to see.

Today presidents, premiers, and other important persons are usually give seats of honor at meetings or gatherings, but certainly not like the thrones of the kings of old. But the 19th Lord’s Day tells us about the place of honor and glory to which the Lord Jesus, the King of kings, ascended after being upon this earth. While here upon earth He had no throne, but was poor, and, as He said, without a place to lay His head. Before His death, the Roman soldiers had mocked Him, putting on Him a scarlet robe and the crown of thorns upon His head.

After His ascension He received from His Father the place of honor at His right hand in heaven. There His glory and honor far exceeded the magnificence of Solomon with all his glory. The Lord Himself said by Isaiah, “The heaven is My throne, and the earth is My footstool.” And in the book of Revelation, the sixth chapter, we see further description of the throne room of the Lord of hosts. Nothing on earth can be compared with it.

There the Lord Jesus as Mediator is yet busy for the benefit of His church and people, as the catechism so clearly tells us. From there He shall come again at the last day. Our prayer must be, “Prepare me, gracious God, to stand before Thy face,” for we too shall be there.

Again we will answer the letters which we have received

JUSTUS VERHEIJ — That is a lot of rain, Justus. Does your tank ever get filled so that it overflows? We read that in the time of King Ahab the Lord said to Elijah, “I will send rain upon the earth.” Although He does not give verbal notice to us, He is even yet the sender of rain upon the earth.

STEFANIE GRISNICH — Yes, Stefanie, the story of Gideon also shows the great wonders which the Lord can do. It would seem impossible for three hundred men to defeat a large army, but with the Lord it was possible. Thank you for the colored picture which you and Maria sent with your answers.

ALINE BOSCH — I see there are two letters from you, Aline. Is Gisborne quite a large city? It is always nice to spend some time away from home, for then quite often home is more appreciated when you return. We are now having very nice weather, but I’m sure the warm weather isn’t here to stay as yet.

JUDITH VERHEIJ — Babies seem to grow up rather quickly, don’t they, Judith? Time passes just as rapidly for us, but we probably don’t show the change as much. However, we too are growing older with them, day by day. That is why the Bible points out to us how short our lives are. Do you know of some of the examples it uses for this?

MARIA GRISNICH — Yes, Maria, we see it all about us how old people must die and young people can die. Every day we see notice of it in our daily newspaper, and even our Banner of Truth never appears without an obituary notice. That is why Solomon said, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth.”

MARY BOSCH — Now that school has started for you again, Mary, no doubt you are busy with your studies. Each year the lessons are somewhat more difficult, but we may continue to ask the Lord for wisdom in those things. Solomon asked the Lord for wisdom, and he received more besides. Do you know what it was that he received besides wisdom?

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for your replies to the Bible quiz. It may sound strange, but it seems to make our work lighter when we see the mail heavier, for then we know that boys and girls are taking time to be busy with their Bibles. May the Lord give His blessing upon it.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
