Teachers' Conference Report

3 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

It is my pleasure to give a report on the NRCEA Teachers' Conference that occurred on August 3-6, 2004, at Rehoboth Christian School in Norwich, Ontario. With the help and guidance of the Lord, the planning for the conference and the conference itself were able to take place in the short amount of time we had. Each day flowed smoothly, and these days were enjoyed by all who attended.

The first day of the conference was the principals' meeting, in which a variety of topics was discussed. The main highlight of that meeting was the topic of dress codes. In general, the principals advise that schools with problems concerning dress codes should seriously consider the use of uniforms for our children.

A prayer service was held in the Netherlands Reformed Church in Norwich on Tuesday evening, at which Rev. H. D. den Hollander officiated. His sermon on the School of Jesus Christ gave much practical instruction for both teachers and parents regarding 1) the teacher, 2) the student, 3) the subjects, and 4) the method of instruction.

The following three days of the conference were days of teachers' meetings. Each day began with a general session, at which all attendees were present. Following the general session were sectionals, from which each attendee selected a topic of his/her interest or concern. The day ended with a general session again for all present. A total of forty-five topics were given in general sessions and sectionals.

On Thursday evening, a dinner cruise was held on the Grand River in Ontario. All conference attendees, board members, and spouses were invited to this dinner. After dinner, an interesting and informative PowerPoint presentation was given by Mr. Peter Bertram on "Christian Education in New Zealand."

I would like to mention some of the topics that were shared, focusing on the general sessions: "Education in the Old and New Testament" (Rev. Den Hollander); "Bullying" (Mr. M. C. Vanderspek); "Children and Baptism" (Rev. C. Vogelaar); "Redefining the Need for Christian Education" (Mr. J. VanderBrink); and "Children and Education" (Rev. A. H. Verhoef).

We had many special guests from far and near: the Netherlands, New Zealand, Michigan, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa, New Jersey, Washington, Alberta, British Columbia, and throughout Ontario. The Lord has spared each in traveling from and back to their homes, for which we need to be truly grateful. A special thank-you for a wonderful job performed goes to all those who helped with the dining arrangements.

Throughout the conference there was opportunity for attendees to socialize with one another and to share in one another's concerns, methods, and ideas from the various schools. It was good to be together with a common goal. May the Lord's blessing rest upon our time together so that it might be profitable for each one who attended, and above all, may it serve to the glory of His Name and the salvation of precious souls. May He help and guide in what lies ahead in the upcoming 2004-05 school year.
