Letters to My Young Readers

LYDIA BLEEKER — If you look at our letters for this month, you can see that we have quite a few birthdays among us during the month of January, don’t we, Lydia? I hope you had a good birthday and that it made you pause a moment and ask the Lord to bless you in this coming year. Everything we have on this earth is from Him, but what a wonder it would be to be given a longing to receive “everything,” salvation through Christ, for our souls. I’m always grateful when I receive a “thank you” from the boys and girls, but I, in turn, feel much more like thanking all of you for being so faithful in doing the puzzles, for writing me notes, and for taking the time for God’s Word. I hope the Lord will bless His Word to your, my, and all of our hearts. Thanks for writing.

RIA TREUR — We are doing well, thank you, Ria. Is your finger on the mend? I’m glad you had a happy birthday. I think we have the same horse set at our house, and it is played with often. Do you like horses? There is a text in Psalm 20 about horses: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” Ask often to be given a heart that trusts the Lord for all things.

HENRIETTE HEGER — Your answers were fine, Henriette, but I didn’t receive your picture. I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your family friend. We often cannot understand why things happen the way they do, can we? However, the Lord is wise and good in all that He does, even if we do not know why one person regained health but it was another’s time to die. The Lord always knows best, and it is a calling to all of us that, one day, an end will come to our life, also. I hope you don’t have so much snow again that you aren’t able to have a church service. One Sunday, our service began late because of snow, but we were still able to have it.

TINEKE TREIJR — Cindy must have been quite surprised to be taken for a ride along with the cows, Tineke. Was she afraid, and were you worried? Maybe Jerry was the most surprised when he opened his cow trailer doors and found a dog there. Thank you so much for the card from you and your family. I wish you a happy, healthy new year, and above all, the Lord’s blessing.

REBECCA VAN ZANDWIJK — Thank you for your wishes for a blessed Christmas and New Year, Rebecca. I hope that in this new year you will ask often for a new heart. I enjoyed the pictures of your brother’s wedding very much. I’m sure it was very special to be able to be a part of it. I don’t receive the “Daniel,” so I haven’t seen your article on music. Did it go well when you played at the concert? I hope you had a happy birthday.

ANNEMARIE TREUR — It was good to hear from you, Annemarie. Was your teacher surprised on her birthday? I’m sure she loved the gift from all of you. Teachers do so much for us during our school years. They are able to make a real difference. I hope that you listen carefully when she teaches Bible lessons. I hope, above all, that you will ask the great Teacher, the Lord, to teach you and bless the Bible texts to your heart.

ARIANNE SLINGERLAND — I’m so glad you decided to write me, Arianne. I love getting to know all of you. I hope your brother’s wedding day will be very special. Do you miss the puppies? Are they all sold? Our dog, a Brittany named Sparky, cut her paw when running on ice a little while ago. She is so tough that she didn’t want to stop playing, but she needed eight stitches. Her paw was bandaged for two weeks, and she was very sad because she had to stay indoors.

AMANDA HERFST — Happy birthday, Amanda. I wish you a healthy year, but above all, that you may be given a heart that seeks after the one thing needful. Thank you for your wishes, as well. Christmas is long past again, but we may go to church each Sunday to still hear about the Lord Jesus. Don’t forget to bow your knees and ask the Lord to bless it to your heart.

DEANNA VAN RAVENSWAAY — Thanks for your letter and pretty card, Deanna. I hope you are well in this new year. In Psalm 90, Moses prayed, “0 satisfy us early with Thy mercy.” Pray often in this year for that mercy, that He would come and work in your heart. Did you go skating? We haven’t had good ice this year because of wind, snow, and rain. It’s too bad, because we all like skating, but maybe some good skating weather will still come. How is Blackie? Kittens are so adorable. I have four children and four pets.

JENNY BOOT — I hope your thumb is on the mend. Feel better!

I hope you have all had a blessed Christmas and a good start to a new year. Thank you for your answers sent in last year and for your cards and wishes. Jordan and Ivan Vrieselaar, it was good to see how you’ve grown up since last year, and Deborah Pelleboer, I also received your wishes. We commemorate the beginning of another year each New Year’s Day, but we do not know in the beginning of a year if we will end the year. May we all pray much in the new year that the Lord will work in our heart. If we may end another year, how do we end it? Did our heart remain the same all year? These are important questions to ask ourselves. I hope all of us will continue to “meet” on these pages of The Banner of Truth each month to study God’s Word together. I enjoy the puzzle work, and I hope you will, in this year, also. I hope to hear from all of you again next month.
