The poet of Psalm 55 speaks a remarkable word. David exhorts himself and all believers: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and He shall sustain thee.” This truth, when spoken in the heart by God’s Spirit, is instructive, encouraging, strengthening, and comforting regarding the many burdens God’s children have to carry in this life. The Lord so kindly invites and stirs them up to come unto Him with all those cares, and He promises that He will sustain them. Read also what the Savior says in Matthew 11:28-30.

May this word of the Lord Jesus, with the admonition of David, be experienced by many in this season as we approach the day that the Curatorium of our theological school hopes to meet in the Beckwith Church of Grand Rapids on May 14, 2014. Not only must there be the examination of our student, but we also hope to meet with those who believe they have the burden of the ministry laid upon them by the Lord. May they be given to cast that burden on the Lord and go to their consistory, asking for an attest to appear before the Curatorium. Then the consistory has a burden to cast on the Lord, begging for light and wisdom. In vacant congregations, the moderator should be asked to be present in order to give advice. If an attest is granted, such a person should send it to the acting clerk of the Curatorium at the address below while the consistory should also contact the acting clerk. Then it would become a burden for the Curatorium and, surely, discernment, faithfulness, light, and wisdom is needed. We, too, need grace to cast the burden upon the Lord.

May it please the Lord in mercy to give exercises with all those burdens, not in the least unto those who have been taught to pray. Are there sighers among us with these burdens? Are there some who feel the need? How is it in the inner chamber? May it please the Lord to give such burdens but also grant us to experience His sustaining power and favor, gladdening us with His deeds. There is need in the congregations, not in the least for our rising generation. There is need also upon the mission field. What an undeserved wonder it would be if the Lord would grant what Paul wrote to the Galatians: “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

We ask the consistories to remember these matters especially in public prayer on the Lord’s Day before the meeting of the Curatorium.
