BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

We are again at the end of one year and the beginning of another year. This should always be a moment to think about the wonders of the Lord in sparing and providing for us throughout the past year. All the blessings which we have received from the Lord should cause us to say with the psalmist, “The Lord hath been mindful of us!” They are all undeserved blessings. In another of the psalms, David said to the Lord, “What is man, that Thou art mindful of him?” At that moment he, too, saw the wonders of the Lord in the provisions of His hand.

However, the Lord is not always given the honor due to Him for them. In the book of Daniel we read that King Nebuchadnezzar walked in the palace of the kingdom of Babylon at the end of the year, surveying all that had been given under his control. And what did he say? He gave himself all the credit, saying, “Is not this great Babylon, that I have built?” This took place even after Daniel had warned him to acknowledge that the Most High God ruled in the kingdom of men.

When the Lord gave His law to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai, He said, “I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.” But, sad to say, even of Israel, God’s chosen people, the Lord had to say, “My people have forgotten Me days without number.” Many years later Hosea said to them, “Thou hast forgotten the law of thy God.”

And what must the Lord say to us? Are we better than those people were in obeying the law of the Lord? In the 34th Lord’s Day of the Heidelberg Catechism, which is the subject of our crossword puzzle this month, we again have the law of God set before us. There are only ten commandments, which are easily remembered. Many of you have learned them in school or in catechism class and know them well. But then they are also easily forgotten, or at least easily disobeyed by us. Therefore Hosea’s words are also spoken to us.

Then our prayer at the beginning of a new year must be the same as David’s prayer in Psalm 119, where he prayed, “O let me not wander from Thy commandments,” and

“Make me to go in the path of Thy commandments.” We may believe that this was also the prayer of Joseph in the land of Egypt. He could say, “Sincerely I have sought Thee, Lord,” and then we read of Joseph, “The Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it to prosper.”

It is such prosperity that we wish for each of you in this new year 1997. May such prayers be in your hearts, implanted by the Lord, for then it shall be said of you as it was of Saul of Tarsus, “For, behold, he prayeth.”

The crossword puzzle, as in the past, uses the texts which are with the Lord’s Day of the Catechism in the back of the Psalter. Where those texts are used, the questions are marked with an asterisk (*). Of course, all the texts are not used, but I’m sure you should be able to sort them out. It is Lord’s Day 34 which is used this month.
