Fortieth Anniversary of the Fort Macleod, Alberta, Congregation

On June 23, 2001, the congregation of Fort Macleod held a special service to commemorate that their congregation had been instituted by Rev. M. Romeyn forty years ago. Many others from neighboring congregations were gathered with them as Rev. P. L. Bazen, of Picture Butte, led them in this commemoration service. His text for this occasion was Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.”

Rev. Bazen explained that the King of the church upholds and sustains His church, and so has He upheld the congregation of Fort Macleod throughout these years. We, however, may never end in man, but in the Lord Himself. This text is a doxology of God's endless glory, to Him that is able to quicken dead sinners, awakening a desire to know the Lord. There was no activity in the soul to know the Lord prior to this quickening. Are ministers and elders able to accomplish this? By no means, for then only troubles would be the result.

Not only has the Lord upheld this congregation for forty years, but He has sustained His church since the beginning of time, quickening dead sinners since the time of Adam. How necessary it is that we all be converted as Adam was. The same power is needed to cause us to lose our fig leaves, for by nature we are clothed in our own righteousness. However, the Lord is able to do exceeding abundantly, above that which we ask or think, or above that for which we long. After the quickening, the desires would no longer focus on the things of the world, but the desires would be busy with those things for which there was no longing earlier. Different literature would be read, different people would be visited.

God still converts His people in the same way, in the way that Scripture teaches, and not as man determines. God's church still exists because He is able to maintain it. It is of God's mercy that we are together to commemorate this special event, all to His honor and glory. God's people need to hear from God Himself, “According to the power that worketh in us.” It is God's work in the beginning, in continuance, and to the end. Man in himself is a great “I,” seeking power for himself, but the Lord says that He is able to do above all that we ask or think. Thus unto God must be the glory.

The more grace received, the greater sinners we become, but less sin is committed. The church of God will remain not only forty years, but will continue throughout all ages, until Christ comes on the clouds of heaven and His saints are joined with Him to all eternity. Churches do come and go, but the Church of God will continue. Rev. Bazen expressed the hope that there were those present of the “church of all ages,” in the past, in the present, and in the future, also in this congregation.

Prior to the sermon, Elder Gerrit van Hierden, as longest-serving consistory member, gave a short history of the congregation. In 1958, the first families met together under the guidance of the congregation of Lethbridge, which was then in Coalhurst. In 1960, their first church building was constructed, with volunteer labor, at a cost of $6,500. In a free vote, Mr. G. Feyter was elected as elder and Mr. D. van Sluys as deacon. Rev. M. Romeyn of Chilliwack, as moderator, officially instituted the congregation on June 23, 1961.

After the sermon, Elder J. van den Broek spoke on behalf of the congregation of Lethbridge and Classis Farwest. Following the service, refreshments were served in the church basement.

CURRENT EVENTS

U.S. House Bans Human Cloning

On a 265-162 vote, the House of Representatives approved H.R. 2505, a bill that bans all forms of human cloning. The vote followed a day of intense debate about the nature of human life and the ethics of biotechnology. It also followed an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to insert an amendment that would have allowed limited human cloning for research purposes. “This is about providing moral leadership for a watching world,” said Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wisconsin, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee. Rep. J.C. Watts, R-Oklahoma, said, “This House should not be giving a green light to mad scientists to tinker with the gift of life.” The cloning fight now transfers to the Senate, where its passage is problematic. President Bush issued a statement saying he would support the ban on all human cloning. May there be prayer also in our midst for our leaders. It was the exhortation of the apostle Paul that prayer be made for all that are in authority, “that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”

Constitutional Amendment on Marriage

A multi-ethnic, multi-faith coalition introduced a constitutional amendment that many say is essential if the institution of marriage is to survive in the 21st century. The text of the proposed amendment is simple: “Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this constitution or the constitution of any state, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups.” The amendment is sponsored by Alliance for Marriage, headed by Matt Daniels. “We are asking Congress to return to the American people the critical question of the nature and definition of the American family, both for this generation and for future generations,” Daniels said. To become part of the U.S. Constitution, the amendment must: 1) pass both houses of Congress by a two-thirds margin; 2) be passed by three-fourths of the state legislatures; and 3) do so within a decade. The president's signature is not required.

San Francisco's Ordinance OK

In an extraordinary ruling, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld the constitutionality of San Francisco's controversial domestic-partner benefits ordinance. The 1997 law requires all businesses with city contracts to offer benefits to the domestic partners of company employees. In making its ruling, the judges decided that an Ohio company, S.D. Myers, must comply with the ordinance and offer domestic-partner benefits at its home base in Ohio if it wants to keep its contract with San Francisco. S.D. Myers is a small Christian company that has religious objections to homosexual behavior. It was the company's electrical transformer maintenance contract with San Francisco that led to the court battle. An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is being considered.

Kevorkian's Bail Denied

Jack Kevorkian will remain behind bars to continue his 10-25 year sentence for second-degree murder, a federal judge recently ruled. Kevorkian's lawyers petitioned the court for his release, charging that the state Court of Appeals was taking too long to consider his case, according to the Detroit News. However, U.S. District Judge Paul D. Boorman ruled that “delay in hearing an appeal, in and of itself, does not require the federal courts to intervene.” Kevorkian's murder conviction came in a case that was based on a videotape broadcast to the nation by 60 Minutes, showing Kevorkian injecting Lou Gehrig's disease-patient Thomas Youk, 52, with lethal drugs in September 1998. Kevorkian will be eligible for parole on May 26, 2007, two days before his 79th birthday.

Dutch Abortion Ship

Pro-lifers rejoiced when the maiden voyage of the Dutch “abortion ship” ended with no unborn babies killed. The ship, called the Aurora, docked in Dublin and Cork from June 14-25, but was limited to distributing abortion information since the Dutch government has yet to issue a license for the ship to perform abortions. While the ship was moored twelve miles offshore in international waters, abortions were supposed to be legal under Netherlands' law since the ship is registered there. However, the truth emerged once the ship docked; it lacked both a Dutch license to operate a medical facility and an Irish license to carry out to sea, according to the New York Times.

News Update

The values of the Boy Scouts “are the values of America.” So said President Bush in a videotaped presentation to the National Boy Scout Jamboree that was held at Fort A.P. Hill, a Virginia military base. “Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence,” Bush told the audience of more than 30,000 Scouts.

A Maryland Christian school has the right to hire only personnel that are of the same religious denomination as the school's parent church. The Pacific Justice Institute had filed suit after Maryland officials told the school not to ask about the religion of its employees.
