BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

The summer months are rapidly passing by, since this is the August issue of our publication. In Psalter 247 there is a phrase which speaks of the passing of time, for when it says, “Time, like an ever-rolling stream,” it gives a very clear picture of how quickly each moment passes by. When we are at the beginning, a month seems like quite a while, but soon we are at the end of the month.

We often make many plans for the things we hope to do, but our plans do not always happen. We use that little word “time” every day, but do we realize what a precious gift time is? In Ecclesiastes 3 Solomon listed a number of things for which time is spent, but he made only a small beginning of a list. Many times a day the question is asked, “What time is it?” We have clocks and watches which show us the passing of time, and on some we can even see the second hand moving moment by moment.

The question might also be asked of us, “How have we spent our time this summer?” Time is just like money: we spend it and it is gone. Do we spend our money wisely? If you work during the summer months, your money is the result of your labor, and therefore you will probably not waste it. But what about your time? God gives it to you, but it is so easy to waste it. King Solomon also spoke to us about the good use of our time. He said, “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest.”

The Bible gives us much direction for our daily lives, and therefore we hope that you will often turn to it to know the way the Lord will have you go and what He would have you do. The quiz this month sets before us the activities of people, examples of things with which they were busy. The Lord Jesus while preaching also spoke of what we should seek in the first place, and perhaps you can tell me what you think this was.

The first letters of the answers will spell out seven words found in Solomon’s book Ecclesiastes, and they show what he had learned about the things which take place in a person’s lifetime.

Anna was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the __?__, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

When Potiphar made Joseph __?__ in his house, and over all that he had, the Lord blessed the Egyptian’s house for Joseph’s sake.

The Lord Jesus said unto Nicodemus, “Verily, verily, I say unto thee, __?__ a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

He said to the Jews, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the __?__ of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.”

One of the psalms begins with the words, “O God, Thou art my God; __?__ will I seek Thee: my soul thirsteth for Thee, my flesh longeth for Thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.”

Paul wrote to the Ephesians, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, __?__ the time, because the days are evil.”

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was yet __?__, Josiah began to seek after the God of David his father.

The prayer of Moses found in one of the psalms is, “So __?__ us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

The Lord Jesus, coming near Jerusalem, wept, saying, “If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are __?__ from thine eyes.”

Of Zacharias we read, “According to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to burn __?__ when he went into the temple of the Lord.”

Solomon, in the book of Proverbs, said, “A good __?__ is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.”

Elisha said to Gehazi, “Is it a time to receive money, and to receive __?__, and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants?”

The psalmist said, “But I trusted in Thee, O Lord: I said, Thou art my God. My __?__ are in Thy hand.”

We read in the book of Acts that Peter and John went up together into the temple at the __?__ of prayer.

Solomon also wrote, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the __?__ days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”

The prophet Hosea wrote, “Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground: for it is time to seek the Lord, till He come and __?__ righteousness upon you.”

The psalmist said, “ __?__, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice.”

The psalmist also wrote, “He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto God the Lord belong the __?__ from death.”

In the book of Acts we read that all the Athenians and strangers which were there __?__ their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.

We read that Daniel went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did __?__.

When the servants of Cornelius came to Peter in Joppa, he had gone upon the housetop to pray about the __?__ hour.

When a son was born to Seth, we read that he called his name __?__, but also that then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

Jacob said to Pharaoh, “Few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not __?__ unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.”

Mordecai sent a message to Esther, saying, “Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for __?__ a time as this?”

When Job’s children were feasting, he rose up early in the morning and offered burnt __?__ according to the number of them all, for Job said, “It may be that my sons have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.”

In the book of Hebrews, it is said, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of __?__.”

Again there are letters to be answered

LUKE LINDHOUT-KANIS — I see you are already thinking about the end of summer, when school will begin again, Luke. Does that mean that you are anxiously awaiting that time? However, it does show how rapidly time passes by, since it seems only a few weeks ago that school was still in session. In the Bible one spoke about time as a tale that is told. Do you know who that was?

TIAN BOER — You are still on time in sending your answers, Tian. I suppose you miss seeing some of your friends regularly during the summer months. Or do some of them live near you? When you receive this issue of the Banner of Truth, the holidays will be coming to an end. Are you anxious to be back in school again? David said that our days are as a shadow, and we know how quickly a shadow can pass by.

MIRANDA VAN KOEVERINGE — The warm and humid weather is to be expected in these summer months, Miranda, but these months soon pass by. Have you been reading the book which you received at graduation? This time of the year, when you have no school, is a good time to do some reading. The Bible tells us of a man reading the book of Isaiah as he traveled through the desert. Do you know who that was?

ILSE NEELS — We are glad to hear that you enjoy doing the Bible quiz, Ilse. It is encouraging for us to see the answers arriving every day, knowing that our young friends have been busy in this way. The psalmist in Psalm 119 asked the Lord, “Order my steps in Thy Word,” so he was looking for the Lord’s daily guidance, something we all need. Yes, I do visit my wife every day. The nursing home is only a few miles from my home.

MARTINA DE BOER — It was good to hear from you, Martina. There are quite a few boys and girls answering the quiz whose mothers and fathers also did so when they were young. I also answered the quiz at one time, but that is many years ago. In writing to Timothy, the apostle Paul reminded Timothy of the good instruction he had received in his life, saying, “From a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures.” We hope that this may be said of many of us.

CISKA BOER — Your mother probably has lots of chores for you to do during the summer months, Ciska. We often think about the many lessons which we learn at school, but there are lessons to be learned at home for our daily life, and mothers are also good teachers. We read of a young girl who no longer had a mother or a father but was brought up as a daughter by her relative, from whom she received much instruction. Do you know who she was?

MIKAYLA LINDHOUT-KANIS — How do you like living on the farm, Mikayla? Do I understand that it is a tree farm? What kind of trees are planted? The Bible also speaks about many different kinds of trees. A particular tree is mentioned which grows from the least of all seeds, but when it is grown, it becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in it. Do you know what kind it was?

MATTHEW VAN KOEVERINGE — Did you catch some fish while vacationing, Matthew? Although I am not an avid fisherman, this summer I spent a few days at a cottage with our children and grandchildren, and did catch a few fish. In the book of John we are told of a large catch of fish caught by the disciples, so that they had to drag the net to shore. Do you know how many fish there were?

Dear young friends, many thanks again for the answers to the Bible quiz. We hope that we may all have a safe summer, whether we are traveling or staying at home. We often think of the possibility of having an accident when traveling, but many, many accidents happen at home. May the Lord protect each one of us, so we may hear from you again next month.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
