Our New Format

3 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Every periodical undergoes a change of format from time to time. For our Banner of Truth, this issue marks the transition to its sixth format in fifty-one years of existence. Our monthly has grown from a 6-page, fold-out paper in 1934 to its present size in 28 pages.

Despite format changes, our goals remain unchanged. Jesus Christ is God’s “Banner of Truth.” It is this “Banner” whom we shall attempt to display in all His riches for poor sinners on these pages. God’s sovereign grace in redemption and man’s humiliation at His footstool, shall be, as always, the staple that binds together our monthly.

At our June 19, 1985 Banner of Truth meeting held in Michigan, a decision was made to involve a greater number of writing contributions from our ministers and elders on a departmental basis. All of our ministers have expressed a willingness to assist in this task. Commencing with this month’s issue, writing assignments made for a one year period, the Lord willing, include the following: Meditation (written alternately by our ministers); Editorial; Questions Answered (editor and others); Guidance for Youth (Rev. J. Den Hoed, Rev. A. Verhoef, Evangelist B. Elshout); Practical Christianity (Rev. A. M. Den Boer, Rev. H. Hofman, Rev. A. Verhoef); Experiential Christianity (Rev. A. M. Den Boer, Rev. J. Den Hoed, and editorial supply from our inheritance — especially from the writings of deceased Rev. Wm. C. Lamain); Church History and Christian Education on an alternating basis (Rev. C. Vogelaar, Evangelist B. Elshout, and Christian School principals); Bible Study (Rev. J. Spaans on the Book of Ruth) and Book Talk (editorial book reviews and advice) on an alternating basis; Elders’s Forum (denominational elders); Dutch Meditation (by Rev. Heerschap and others); Church News, School News, Current Events, and From Other Periodicals or Our Inheritance (supplied by editor); and Timothy which will continue to supply an opening article, Bible Quiz, short stories, quotations, illustrations, etc. under the supervision of our assistant editor, Elder Garret Moerdyk.

It is our hope that the Lord’s blessing may rest on these endeavors and that our monthly periodical may meet a real need for our congregations and readership. Without the Lord, we can do nothing; hence, we solicit your prayers also for this cause. Through the pages of our Banner of Truth, may the Holy Spirit grant much food for His people; yes, for each of us—from the growing child to the elderly—to our spiritual edification and education. With divine assistance, applicable material will be written for all age levels based on one foundation: the “Banner of Truth” (Ps. 60:4)—Jesus Christ and Him crucified (I Cor. 2:2), Who is Himself the only foundation (I Cor. 3:11).
