BIBLE QUIZ

17 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

Dear Boys and Girls,

The end of the year is coming near again. Sometimes we are looking ahead, making plans for next week, or next month, or next year. But at other times we look back, thinking about the things which have taken place earlier this year or even before that time. Perhaps there are some things which we should have done differently, or must say, “That was the wrong thing to do.” In the Bible we read how the prodigal son came to himself in that distant land as he thought about his sad condition and the things which he had done. He said, “I will arise and go to my father and say, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee.”

Do we also confess our wrongs— before the Lord and unto others? The Lord Himself has said, “Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou hast transgressed against the Lord thy Cod.” He calls us to do so, whoever and wherever we might be, and promises His help and His blessing.

It should be our desire to walk in His ways — to walk in wisdom’s ways, looking unto Him. This good example is shown us in many places of God’s Word. This month the quiz is about those good desires and upright purposes in heart and life. May we each be given to follow in these footsteps.

And now we have some letters to answer:

Leona Vanden Brink

We had heard about your grandfather, Leona. Yes, we did know him, since we had visited him a number of years ago when your grandmother was still alive. The truth of God’s Word can be seen so clearly, “It is appointed to men once to die.”

Remco Funcke

suppose that some days the papers are heavier than other days, Remco. Of course, as long as you ride your bike, it doesn’t make that much difference. What do you do with the money you earn? Are you saving some for a special purpose?

Charmain Huisman

Weddings are very special moments, Charmain, not only for the bride and groom, but also for the families. We then see two young people start a life together. In the Bible we also read about weddings. Can you think of some instances mentioned in the Bible?

Stella Shouten

Perhaps your brother will have returned by the time you receive this, Stella. Did he have a good trip? A journey of that distance would at one time have taken much time for travelling, but today it is so different. Have you ever made a visit overseas?

Cindy Kreft

We do not like to hear of snow already, Cindy, but have to realize that it is to be expected. Your flowers will then be covered with snow. What do you find in the Bible about flowers? They are mentioned a number of times.

Jeremy Kaat

Michigan also experienced some damaging winds and flooding, Jeremy. We sometimes speak of powerful machines and weapons, but they do not compare to the power of God as can be seen in nature. In what other ways can we see God’s power?

Philip Schouten

What did you do on “Work Day”, Philip? Could you pick what you wanted to do, or did they assign something to you? As the Lord Jesus was instructing His disciples, He told them for what they should labor. Do you know what it was?

Derek Kreft

Have you figured out why some of the eggs hatched and others did not, Derek? There are many things which we cannot control, and then we may see how helpless we really are. Give our greetings to your parents and the rest of the family.

Mary-loan De Wilde

It was nice to hear from you, Mary-Joan. Do you live right in Monarch, or do you live on a farm? Since we were there last year, we have some idea of the area in which you are living. What are you studying about in your class this year?

Darla Rus

Yes, Darla, we had quite a lot of rainy days this year. This kept the grass green and the flowers blooming, but it was a serious problem for the farmers. Rain is not under our control, but in all things we may bring our needs before the Lord.

Thanks, boys and girls, for your answers to the quiz. May the Lord bless you in your studies, and may it be said of you as of young Samuel: in favor both with the Lord, and also with men.

With Love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

GOD’S WATCHFUL CARE

Rowland Hill (1744-1833), the well-known minister and hymnwriter, had a man who worked in his garden. This man was accounted a respectable, even a godly, man — yet really he was a daring criminal.

There had been many robberies and burglaries in the district but, of course, the “honest” gardener was not even suspected. But at length he was caught in the very act and it was found that he was the one who had been responsible previously. He was tried, condemned and put to death.

Of course, his master visited him before his execution and the gardener openly confessed to the many crimes of which he was guilty.

But there was one thing that puzzled Rowland Hill.

“William,” he said to the gardener, “why was it that you never robbed me? You had so many opportunities.”

“Sir,” was the reply, “you know the juniper bush near the dining room? Often at night I hid under it, intending to break into the house. But I was afraid. Something said, ‘He is a man of God.

It is a house of prayer.’ I felt that if I broke in I should surely be found out. So I could never get the courage to do it.”

The gardener also told him something else:

“Sir, I knew well that old Mr. Rigg (a member of Mr. Hill’s congregation) always carried a lot of money in his pockets. Time and time again I have hidden behind the hedge in the lane leading to his house. Again and again when going home from the prayer meeting he has passed so close that I could have touched him. But I could not move. I dare not touch so holy a man. I was afraid. When he drew near, I started to tremble for I knew he was a holy man. So I gave up the idea altogether.”

How true it is: “The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear Him, and delivereth them”!

CLOCKS

It has been said that our godly forefathers had their clocks put on the outside of their places of worship — so that they might not be late in their attendance. We have transferred them to the inside — lest our services should last too long!

ARE YOU FULLY COVERED

An old preacher of the gospel used to tell an experience he had as he was riding on a train. At a small town a gentleman got on and sat down next to him. Presently, the man turned to the preacher and said, “That’s a poor town as far as my business is concerned. I didn’t do much of anything there. I am an insurance salesman, and for some reason that place is one of the worst I have struck for a long time.”

The preacher said he felt sorry for him.

After a short pause, the salesman asked, “What business are you engaged in?”

“I’m in the insurance business myself,” said the Christian.

“Is that so? What company do you work for?”

“Oh,” replied the preacher, “I work for the biggest insurance company in existence.”

“The Metropolitan? That’s the concern I work for, too!”

“Oh, no, the company I work for is bigger than the Metropolitan.”

“That can’t be,” argued the salesman. “The Metropolitan is the largest company in the world in our line.”

“Nevertheless,” maintained the servant of Christ, “the company I work for is far bigger. And is a very unique outfit, too. It is the only company where all the premiums are paid in already. Its resources are unlimited. The insured comes in for all the benefits, and it does not cost one cent to be insured for any account. The company has never defaulted on its obligations, and it pays out promptly and to the full amount. You take out insurance with my company, and you will find it is at all times — nothing!”

“Say,” said the salesman, “I’d like to take a policy in your company.”

“You may,” was the reply, “for my company can insure you not only for time but for all eternity. You see, I am working for the largest insurance company. Its three partners are the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.”

Insurance for this Life.

Are you fully covered by insurance? You are not if you have taken out insurance only for this life. Where is your faith in God and His providence? If you think that you have faith in God, show it in trusting God for all things.

What men call life insurance, does not insure against loss of life. It might better be called death insurance than life insurance. Theft insurance does not prevent theft; nor does accident insurance prevent accident; nor fire insurance fire.

Do not be deceived. Set not your heart upon the things and idols of this world. Do not sin against God and His Word. This life is not all; it is but a mere fraction of our eternal existence. If you have no insurance for eternity you are not fully covered.

Added Benefits

Here is true life insurance, for it guarantees eternal life to its possessor. God gives to the believing soul eternal life, never to be forfeited. And with that eternal life is thrown in every other blessing. You get property insurance, for there is laid up for the Christian an inheritance “incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away” (1 Peter 1:4). You get theft insurance; for if your treasure is in heaven, no moth or rust can corrupt it, nor can thieves break through and steal (Matt. 6:20). You get fire insurance, for the soul that believes in Jesus will never know the horrors of the lake of fire (Rev. 21:8). You get accident insurance, for “all things work together for good to them that love God” (Rom. 8:28). And every other insurance is yours when as a poor and needy sinner you may come to Christ.

Insurance for Eternity

God really insures, for His insurance keeps the believer out of death, out of judgment, and brings him forever into the joy and glory of life everlasting.

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for. That word substance, is translated “assurance” or “insurance” elsewhere. It is faith that insures the believer. It is not anything he does, or brings, or pays. It is simply his resting on what Jesus has done for the poor and needy soul, that fully insures the soul.

THE FERRYMAN

One day a servant was given a letter by his master to deliver to someone who lived in a town far away. He put the letter in his pocket and went off to deliver it.

After a long time the servant returned to his master who asked him, “Did you deliver the letter?”

“No,” replied the servant, looking very sorry for himself.

“Why did you not deliver it?” his master demanded.

The servant replied, “Well, on my journey I came to a river. I could not cross it as it was very deep and very wide, and I could not swim.”

The master then asked, “Was there not a boat at the riverside?”

“Yes,” came the reply, “but it was at the other side.”

“Was there not a ferryman on the boat?”

“Yes,” said the servant, “there was a ferryman there.”

“Did you call out to the ferryman to come over to take you across?”

“No, I didn’t,” replied the servant.

“Oh, you fool,” said the master, “thousands and thousands have called out to that ferryman and he has come over.”

Boys and girls, that story reminds me of what will take place on the Day of Judgment. When sinners will be found guilty of their sins, they will also be found guilty of the sin of not calling upon God to save them, for they were told, “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near.”

No wonder many will be ashamed and silent on that day! God is presenting to all kinds of sinners, young and old, everything needed to be saved. I am sure you have heard that you cannot get to Heaven without a new heart. Where will you get that? From God. I am sure you have heard also that you cannot get to Heaven unless you have faith in Jesus Christ. Where will you get faith? From God. I am also sure that you have read the words of Jesus in the Bible, “Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.” Where will you, a young child, get repentance? From God.

I hope every one of you, after reading this story, will go alone to a quiet place, where you can pray in secret, and that you will ask God for His Holy Spirit to give you the new heart, the faith and the repentance that you need.
