“WE HAVE NO MIGHT”

To show the weakness of man and how he is unable to defend himself against the power of sin and Satan, a minister used the following illustration—

A farmer was once engaged in thrashing corn. Having been busy all day, there was a considerable heap on the floor at night as a result. But when he came back to his barn the next morning, all the trashed corn was gone. This happened a second and a third time, till the farmer could bear it no longer, so he resolved to watch all night, as well as work all day.

That night he had not been waiting long when the thief appeared and began to gather up the corn. Leaping upon him, the farmer tried to put him down so that he might bind him or hold him there until help arrived. But the thief proved to be the stronger of the two, and he had laid the farmer on his back and had almost strangled him when a friend came to the rescue.

After the farmer was able to stand up, his friend who was now holding the thief asked, “What shall we do with the thief?” “Oh,” said the farmer, “tie him up and give him to me on my back, and I will set off at once with him to the prison in the village.”

His friend did as he requested, and off set the farmer with his burden. But as he went out of sight in a hollow of the road, the thief with one effort broke the cords that bound him, fell upon the farmer, and gave him even a rougher handling than before. He would utterly have perished had not his faithful friend come up just in time to again save him. “What shall we do with him now?” his friend asked again. The answer was the same as before, only he added, “I will be more careful this time.”

So again he started with his troublesome burden on his back. All was quiet until he came to a dark place in the road, where the ropes were again broken and the farmer was maltreated ever worse than before. Once again his friend came to his help, but now the farmer would not part with him until he accompanied him to the prison. His request was granted, the jail reached, and the thief was soon locked up. Forgetting his friend in his delight at getting rid of his tormentor, the farmer set out for home with a light step.

Just as he had banished all fear from his heart and was thinking in anticipation of peace for the future, the thief, having escaped from his cell, overtook him, sprang upon him from behind, and with even more than his former fury, threw the poor farmer to the ground. He would now have killed him outright had not the usual help just come ‘in the time of need’.

Once again his friend asked, “What will now be done?” The farmer, worried and wearied, cast himself at his feet, and seizing him with both hands, cried, “Let not the day dawn on which thou and I shall be parted for one moment, for without thee I can do nothing.”

Does not this story show the truth of those words which the psalmist spoke, “If it had not been the Lord Who was on our side, now may Israel say, …..Blessed be the Lord, Who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth” (Psalm 124).

(The above illustration was taken from the book “The Days of the Fathers in Ross-shire”).
