A LETTER OF THE LATE REV. J. VANDE HOEF

5 minuten leestijd Arcering uitzetten

to Mr. and Mrs. Peter Van Belle, Sunnyside, Wash.

Rock Valley, Iowa

July 15, 1940

Esteemed Friends,

Through the goodness of the Lord we may yet share in the treasure of health, and you may both also yet share in that blessing as we have read in your letter. We were glad with your letter and also with the open-hearted and sincere letter of Wm. Blaak. We have felt that we are of the same sentiments with respect to the truth as it is in Christ Jesus. Here and there we yet find a few of those scattered people whom the Lord preserves to cleave to the Truth in these days of great deceit and apostacy. But there is more, and that is that we hope that we have met one another in the way and the work of God, as He works that in the hearts of His people.

Wherever that work of God is manifested in the soul by the Holy Ghost, there remains a poor and needy people, who have been formed to the glory of the Lord and also are qualified in Christ Jesus for the Kingdom of God. These people approve of what is good and right, and will at times condemn themselves. These people also feel the band of unity in the blessed truth by virtue of that life which the Lord has put in the soul; this truth in which God is supremely glorified, and man, sinful man, most deeply mortified. These people become one with the Lord and with each other in the Lord’s own way, in and through which He leads all His people to salvation. It is a way to which flesh and blood will never submit, since it is a cutting off unto justification and a daily dying in the way of satification in Christ Jesus our Iord. Yet, these people do not want another way, because they begin to will what God wills. God all, and the creatures nothing.

We believe that we could notice something of these matters in your letter and also in friend Blaak’s letter. We hope, if it is the Lord’s will and He will keep the way open, to meet each other face to face. May the Lord command His precious blessing upon our plans, and that our beginning may be in the Name of the Lord. Oh, that our highest purpose may be the glory of God and the welfare of Zion.

Receive the greetings of Mrs. Steenhove. She is 80 years old and is becoming weaker, but is at times yet fresh and green to proclaim that the Lord is good and just. She is a member of our congregation. She is also one of those few who may in full consciousness possess her salvation by faith in Christ Jesus.

Br. Schelling and his wife are also yet well. Last evening he was yet amongst my hearers here and said that he also had received a letter from you, asking him to come along. I do not think that will be possible because the journey is too long by car. It is also very tiresome for me. I think that I shall travel by train when I come. We will write yet before the time is here to visit you, D. V. I hope you will write again also. I will not reply to Wm. Blaak’s letter now, for we hope to meet one another soon and I am busy writing other letters.

You wrote me that the opposers and mockers did not remain in their hiding-place when they heard of your willingness to gather on the Lord’s Day. This is what I have expected; they also came forth before me. But it was given me to fight them in the strength of the Lord, and presently they have lost their strength. We may observe the hand of the Lord therein; it is not our case, but of the great King. The Lord, Who directs all things, has also decreed who shall come to hear us and who not. This is something in which we have nothing to do. Of course this does not shut out publishing what is going to happen. Then it is for all that hear about it to decide if they shall come or not. The most important thing shall be that we may gather in the name and the favor of Israel’s God. Then even if there are only two or three gathered in the Name of the Lord, He has given His promise. He is not bound to the creature, but is bound to His own promises, which are all yea and amen in Christ Jesus, to the glory of His name and the salvation of His people. We will now close for this time and hope to hear from you again.

Give all the friends our hearty greetings. We also received a letter from Rev. Van Zweden last week. He was very glad that the way was opened that we could visit you and for the first time preach the words of life amongst you.

We have not heard anything from our ministers and our family in the Netherlands. (This was written during wartime — Ed.) May the Lord show mercy to them, and us also, to be sanctified in the way of suffering. It is apparent that they have set their heart upon the living child. May it be given unto us to ascribe justice unto the Lord in shamefacedness.

Receive our hearty greetings and a prayer for your welfare.

Your willing servant and friend,
