Minutes of Classis East April 2013 Meeting

Prayer Service

The Prayer Service for the meeting of Classis East was led by Rev. J. den Hoed on Tuesday evening, April 23, 2013, at 8:00 P.M. at the calling church of Markham, Ontario. The text for this occasion was taken from Psalm 73:23b&24. “Thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with Thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.”

The theme for the sermon was, “The Wonderful Portion of God’s People.” Following a word of introduction, Rev. den Hoed explained the following three points: (1) The Lord who took him (Asaph)—this gives courage in the heart; (2) The Lord who held him through the strife and difficulties; and (3) The Lord who directed him—guidance with counsel to glory.

Asaph was privileged to experience, by grace, what it is to be kept by the Lord and calmly rest in His all-wise counsel. The Lord held him by his right hand in order to preserve him from following the foolishness of his own heart and to sustain him in the heavy strife so that he would not give way to the enemy. Asaph was given to acknowledge God and was humbled under the leading of the Holy Spirit. By renewal he received true uncovering and discovering light. The fruit was a true sense of his unworthiness and that all honor be to God alone.

In a word of application, it was expressed that it may please the Lord, in His sovereign mercy, to think upon each one in the congregation, classis, and denomination. That something of Asaph’s soul experience may also, for first or by renewal, become our experience. It would be an eternal wonder, never to be understood here, especially those last words ... “and afterward receive me to glory.” God grant it for His covenant’s sake.

Article I—Opening

On behalf of the congregation of Markham, the calling church, Rev. E. Hakvoort opened the meeting with the request to sing Psalter 428:8&10 and the reading of Scripture, namely, Ephesians 5:1-14. Following prayer, the minister extended a word of welcome to the delegates and visitors present and then spoke a few edifying words reflecting on verse 14b in particular, “Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.”

In these words the Apostle Paul warns against the spiritual sleep of sin and the sleep of death. This admonishment comes not only to the believers who are asleep in a way of backsliding and common sins but also to unbelievers who are dead in sins and trespasses. The first are admonished to wake up by the power of the Spirit of God, which they already are partakers of by grace. The others are exhorted to rise up from the dead by means of this admonishing Word and Spirit that they may experience the strength of the new life. This was typified in the history of Lazarus who was raised by the power of Christ’s word. The wish was expressed that it may please the Lord to arise in this dark day and raise up, yes, awaken many out of the sleep of sin and death for His own name sake. In John 5:25, it is expressly recorded, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.”

Article V—Reports

Youth Conference Committee

On behalf of the committee, Elder J. Tod reported that the last youth conference held on July 14, 2012, proceeded in an orderly fashion and that the attendance was well represented by the congregations. Topics were presented by Rev. E. Hakvoort and Rev. A.H. Verhoef to approximately 150 attending youth. The delegates were informed that the Youth Day for this year is planned for July 6th and is to be held in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey, the Lord willing.

Article VI—Instructions

The following instructions were forwarded to Classis:

1) If an Elder is not re-elected, when does the term of his office end?

According to Church Order, the term of office is equivalent to two years which expires upon the installation of the incoming office bearer(s). With due respect to both the outgoing office bearer(s) and those who are to be installed, it is understood that the outgoing office bearer(s) accompany the consistory for the last time during the installation service and, if requested, attend the next consistory meeting in order to accommodate a transition. In the event that a member does not accept the office to which he is elected, the term of the former office bearer is not automatically extended unless the circumstances and the profit of the church require otherwise, (refer to Rev. G.H. Kersteris explanation of the Church Order, “In the Footsteps of Our Fathers,” pages 68-71).

2) A request for clarification regarding the payment of expenses incurred when a minister is asked to speak on behalf of the Classis, for instance, at the installation of another minister. Does the Classis, congregation, or minister pay for this?

It was agreed that the congregation where the minister is serving reimburse the expenses.

Article VII—Moderatorships

There were no changes to the moderatorships.

Article VIII—Expenses

The total expenses for the Classis meeting amounted to $2,586.21. A collection of $559.05 was deducted and left a balance of $2,027.16. This amount is to be prorated and divided over the congregations.

Article IX—Calling Church for the Next Meeting, D.V.

According to alphabetical rotation, the calling church for the next Classis will be Norwich, Ontario. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Norwich on October 16, 2013, or on April 30, 2014, if there are no points submitted for the October date. The prayer service is to be led by Rev. A.H. Verhoef on the evening before the meeting. By rotation Rev. E. Hakvoort is to be president and Rev. J. den Hoed, vice-president, all the Lord willing.

Article X—Closing

As there were no further agenda points, Rev. Verhoef, in closing, read Psalm 146 and spoke a few edifying words in connection with verse five where it is recorded, “Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.” The wish was expressed that, by the grace of God, these words may also be an encouragement for the office bearers in the time in which we live. After Psalter 163:1-3 was sung, Elder J. Zekveld, of the calling church, closed with prayer.

Office Bearers’ Conference

There was opportunity to hold an office bearers’ conference since there was ample time prior to the departure of the delegates.

Rev. Hakvoort opened the afternoon with the request to sing Psalter 213:2-5 and then read Deuteronomy 6:1-10. Following prayer, the topic presented was titled, “The Place of God’s Word in Family and Congregational Life.” The following three main points were explained and accompanied with practical applications:

(1) What God’s Word testifies concerning this. “Thus saith the Lord”;

(2) The practice of gathering around God’s Word;

(3) The guidelines according to God’s Word. In closing, Psalter 90:6&7 was sung and prayer offered.
