A THREEFOLD CORD
The formal principle of Christianity may be expressed in these terms: The word of God alone. That is to say, the Christian receives the truth solely on the word of God, admitting no other source of religious knowledge. The material principle may be as briefly expressed: The grace of Christ alone. That is, the Christian becomes possessed of salvation solely by the free grace of Christ, acknowledging no other meritorious cause of eternal life. The personal principle of Christianity, indicated by the simplest terms, is: The work of the Spirit alone. That is, that in every soul redeemed there must be a moral and personal work of regeneration wrought by the Holy Spirit. These three simple truths — the word of God alone; the grace of Christ alone; the work of the Spirit alone — are the great signal-lights which the Holy Spirit has set up in the Church, the three fundamental principles of evangelical Christianity.
