A PERIODICAL FOR YOUNG AND OLD
O Timothy keep that which is committed to thy trust. II Thimothy 6:20
TRY THE SPIRITS WHETHER THEY ARE OF GOD.
Dear friends,
We read in I John 4:1, “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God; because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” Since the day of Pentecost when the Spirit of God was poured out upon men and women who feared the Lord, many false prophets, teaching false doctrines, have gone out. Satan is a most delusive imitator, who always tries to deceive men by imitating the works of God. Although the Lord could stop Satan in his doings, yet it is manifest that under the governing Providence of God, Satan is permitted to tempt men. How crafty Satan is to imitate the work of God!
Does the Lord leave men without any means of help against the devices of the devil? No, not at all. First of all He gave us the means of prayer; secondly, He gave us His Word. These means humbly, honestly and continually used are mighty weapons against the misleading activities of Satan and his helpers, the false prophets. Searching the Scriptures without humbly pleading for the guidance of the Holy Spirit while doing so will not help us. Neither will praying without reverent, continued consultation of God’s Word avail much.
Another great help in trying the spirits whether they are of God is an acquaintance with the writings of those men who have been extraordinarily enabled by God to bring the heresies of Satan’s helpers, the false prophets, to light. The false doctrines proclaimed today as being newly discovered truths are generally old heresies clothed in a new robe. The fact that today so few, especially among the younger generation, are acquainted with books that deal with the unveiling of false doctrines makes it so much easier for false prophets to deceive many. Often they come to our doors with an appearance of godliness by quoting texts from the Bible in order to make themselves acceptable for discussion of religious subjects. Pretending a concern for one’s wellbeing for this life and life to come, they try to sell a religion suited to a fallen man’s ideas and wishes. When even the devil tried to decieve the Lord Jesus by quoting a text from the Bible, we should not be surprised that Satan’s followers approach us with Bibles in their hands and scripture texts in their mouths. They know that nothing helps them more in gaining access to the minds and homes of those who have some form of religion than a pretended respect for the Bible.
The decline in interest for doctrine and the idea, which gains more and more ground among people of all creeds, that eventually it does not matter much unto salvation what a person believes if it only be a sincere belief are accountable for an ever increasing lack of knowledge of biblical doctrine. The more ignorant a person is, the easier prey he will be for the delusions of false prophets. In the Confession of Faith and in the Heidelberg Catechism our, fathers defended and explained the truth against the heresies of the Roman Catholic church and other ancient heretics. In the Canons of Dordt our fathers dealt with the heresies of the so-called Remonstrants or Arminians, who taught the free-will religion. However, the false spirits did not die out at that time. It seems to me that the closer the great Day of the Lord approaches, the more actively false prophets are operating, deluding great masses of people.
To help you try the spirits whether they are of God, I would like to go over some of the modern heresies with you. Next month D.V. we hope to discuss the Mormons.

BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
Vacation from school is here again, and no doubt you are all happy about it. I’m sure it seems good not to be in school every day, not to have homework to do nor lessons to study. But what is necessary to be truly happy? Did all of you read the article last month about the happy little girl? What does the Bible teach us about those who are happy? In Proverbs 3 you will find an answer to that question. Can you find it? Those five words spell out the first letters of our answers this month.
All of the questions are about the word or message of the Lord to persons of Bible times. Sometimes His word came to them directly and sometimes by a messenger. Do we have messages from the Lord in these days? Yes, we do. We have His Word, the Bible, and He is speaking to us in this way. Also ministers bring His message to us. May we never forget this as we read the Bible or listen to a sermon. It would be a great blessing if we might be given an ear and heart as young Samuel had received, and say, “Speak, Lord, for Thy servant heareth.”
The questions are taken from all parts of the Bible, so you will have to recall some of the Bible stories which you have learned in order to know just where to look for the answers.
To whom did the Lord Jesus say, “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hand”?
Who was told by a prophet, “Thus saith the Lord, set thine house in order: for thou shalt die and not live”?
To whom did the Lord say, “My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends, for ye have not spoken of Me the thing that is right”?
To whom did the Lord say, “Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh”?
To whom did the Lord call, saying, “Where art thou?”
Whom did the Lord instruct, saying, “Make thee an ark of gopher wood”?
The angel of the Lord said to Gideon, “The Lord is with________, thou mighty man of valour.”
To whom did the Lord say, “Return to thy mistress and submit thyself under her hands”?
To whom did God say, “Take now thy son, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah”?
The Lord said unto Joshua, “Israel hath sinned and they have also ________my covenant.”
Later the Lord said to Joshua, “ ________not, neither be dismayed, arise and go up to Ai.”
To whom did God speak, saying, “Fear not to go down to Egypt, for I will there make of thee a great nation”?
To whom did the Lord Jesus say, “-Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God”?
What city was Paul approaching when he heard a voice saying, “Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?”
To whom did the word of the Lord come, saying, “Go shew thyself unto Ahab”?
Who was the father of the blind man to whom Jesus said, “What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?”
God said unto Laban in a dream,
“Take__________that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad.”
And the Lord said to Cain, “________ is Abel thy brother?”
To whom did the word of the Lord come, saying, “Go, and say to Hezekiah, I have heard thy prayer”?
To whom did the Lord say, “How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?”
To whom was Nathan the prophet sent to say, “Thus saith the Lord, Shalt thou build Me a-house for Me to dwell in?”
The Lord said to Isaac, “I will perform the_________which I sware unto Abraham thy father.”
Unto whom did the angel of the Lord say, “Why seekest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret?”

And now we shall answer the letters which we received —
RHEA STUB BE — Your letter is right on top, Rhea, so you shall be first. My daughter’s name is Alice and she is fourteen. Her girl friend’s name is Joanne. How are the little squirrels getting along? Or did your sister let them go again?
MARY VAN TILBURG — Is Newton Hills very far from where you live, Mary? Do you like to go camping? You seem to have a number of pets at your house. Do you have names for all of them? The only pets we have at present are fish.
JERRI REA — I did not expect anyone to answer from New Mexico, Jerri. We are real happy to hear from you and to have you join in answering our quiz. I had to check the map in order to see where you live. How far are you from the Mexican border?
GARY ROOZENBOOM — It has been quite dry here, Gary, as we have had only an occasional shower. You certainly had a lot of rain the first part of the month. What are you doing during the summer months? I am sure there is lots of work to be done this time of the year.
RALPH VAN ZWEDEN — We are all quite well, Ralph, and were happy to hear that you are enjoying your vacation. How are the garden crops doing? Do you keep all of the weeds out of your section? Do you find lots of things to do during vacation?
WILMA KOUTSTAAL — Did you get good marks on your report card. Wilma? Where did you go on the bus trip? It is a good thing you don’t have school all year round, but also good that you don’t have vacation all the time.
ELIZABETH GEERLING — Your answers were all correct as usual, Elizabeth. Do you think the questions are quite easy? Did you win at the field day? What do you plan to do during the summer months? Those few months will go by quite rapidly
DENISE STAFFORD — How nice to have so many friends in New Mexico, Denise. Probably you were looking for your name in the June issue, but it is always a month later. We hope you will be able to answer the quiz with us every month.
JOAN VAN ZWEDEN — Did you have a good trip, Joan? How many miles did you travel? Did you meet Jerri, Denise, and Julie while you were there? You will have to write and tell me all about it. I imagine it is quite warm in that part of the country.
BEVERLY SOUTHWAY — Beverly, I think perhaps you have me confused. Is your middle name Barbara? If I am not mistaken, you do have a sister whose name is Barbara. I put down both names in the list of those who answered the quiz. Perhaps you will have to straighten me out.
JOE VAN WOUDENBERG — Our grass is turning quite brown, Joe, and it takes lots of watering to keep it green. This is rather unusual for the month of June. How evident it is that it is God Who giveth rain upon the earth and sendeth waters upon the fields, as we read in the book of Job. Can you find that text?
JANET VAN ZWEDEN — We were sorry to hear about the death of your cousin, Janet. What a serious warning it is to each of us when such things happen. I have read that our life is like a brittle thread, and who can tell how soon the thread may break?
BILLY STUBBE — Do you have many pheasants in your part of Canada, Billy? We see them quite often here when out in the open fields. Did your Uncle John leave again, or is he still with you? During the summer months many more people have an opportunity to travel.
JUDY SLINGERLAND — Did your canary like the new cage you bought, Judy? Even birds and animals have to become accustomed to new surroundings. Are you keeping real busy this summer? I image you can always find things to do.
JOHN VAN ZWEDEN — How did you like New Mexico, John? Would you like to live there? Did the black-billed cuckoo recover? I don’t believe that I have ever seen that particular bird, but I am really not much of a birdwatcher. Did you see any new kinds of birds while on your trip?
JULIE DENE REA — Thank you very much for your letter, Julie. We hope that you will continue to answer the quiz every month, as it is a very good way to learn to know the Bible. Tell Mrs. Fariss that I said “Thank-you” for the new friends.
ANNETTE KOUTSTAAL — Do you still have all of the rabbits, Annette? I see that you are already thinking about school, even though summer vacation has just begun. What grade will you be in next fall? Do you have any catechism classes during the summer?
MARY ELLEN VAN ZWEDEN — Yes, Mary, there is much sadness, not only in certain families, but in all the world. Can you tell me why this is? Do they know what caused the fire? 200 pigs is a loss. Do you know where in the Bible we read about 2000 swine that were destoyed?
MARK VAN ZWEDEN — How is your garden coming, Mark? Are you taking good care of it? I imagine you will be happy when you can pick the first ear of corn. Be sure to say Hello to your parents and grandparents for us.
ROELIE STAPEL — Your letter is the last one this time, Roelie. Now that school is out, it probably seems good to forget about studies and homework for a while. Or maybe you’re studying this summer so you’ll be ready for fall.
Thanks to all of you, boys and girls, for your answers and letters. We are always glad to see a good response, and even notice when some of you are missing from the list.
With greetings and love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
ARE YOU HAPPY?
An infidel was once addressing a crowd of people in the open air. He was trying to persuade them that there was no God and no devil, no heaven and no hell, no resurrection, no judgment, and no life to come. He advised them to throw away their Bibles, and not to mind what ministers said. He recommended them to think as he did, and to be like him. He talked boldly. The crowd listened eagerly. It was “the blind leading the blind.” Both were falling into the ditch. (Matthew 15:14).
In the middle of his address a poor old woman suddenly pushed her way through the crowd to the place where he was standing. She stood before him. She looked him full in the face. “Sir,” she said in a loud voice, “are you happy?” The infidel looked scornfully at her and gave her no answer. “Sir,” she said again, “I ask you to answer my question. Are you happy? You want us to throw away our Bibles. You tell us not to believe what ministers say about religion. You advise us to think as you do, and be like you. Now before we take your advice we have a right to know what good we shall get by it. Do your fine new notions give you much comfort? Do you yourself really feel happy?”
The infidel stopped, and attempted to answer the old woman’s question. He stammered, and shuffled, and fidgetted, and endeavoured to explain his meaning. He tried hard to change the subject. He said that he “had not come there to preach about happiness.” But it was of no use. The old woman stuck to her point. She insisted on her question being answered, and the crowd took her part. She pressed him hard with her inquiry, and would take no excuse. And at last the infidel was obliged to leave the ground, and sneak off in confusion. He could not reply to the question. His conscience would not let him; he dare not say that he was happy.
Are you a young person? I entreat you to accept the affectionate warning of a minister of the Gospel, and not to seek happiness where happiness cannot be found. Seek it not in riches; seek it not in power and rank; seek it not in pleasure; seek it not in learning. All these are bright and splendid fountains; “their waters taste sweet. A crowd is standing round them, which will not leave them; but, oh, remember that God has written over each of these fountains, “He that drinketh of this water shall thirst again.” (John 4:13). Remember this, and be wise. “Happy is that people whose God is the Lord.” (Psalm 144:15).
THE DANGER OF ANGER
A prominent business man some time ago related the following out of his own experience: “My father was an invalid and as his son if fell to me to manage his affairs. On one occasion I had more than the usual amount of overseeing to do, and I asked father, who was able to be about a little, if he would do the chores around the home that day while I finished up my work on the other farm. He assented. But when I returned late, tired and worn, he told me that he had not done what he promised to do. The hot words were just ready to leap out, but somehow I choked them back, and said, “It’s all right, father. I’m not so very tired after all.” I started off, when father called me back, and laying his hand on my head, he said, “George, you’re the best son a father ever had; God bless you.” I went to my tasks and performed them.
“When I returned my father could not speak to me — he was done with all earthly tasks — but from that day to this, whenever the temptation to anger has come, I have felt the pressure of his hand upon my head.” That godly father must have taught his son the proverb — “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” And how thankful could the son well be that he had spoken the “soft answer”; that he had indeed ruled his spirit.

A PRESENT GOD
We do not observe God’s hand as much as we should. Our good puritanic forefathers, when it rained, used to say that God had unstopped the bottles of heaven. When it rains nowadays, we think the clouds have become condensed. If they had a field of hay cut, they used to plead of the Lord that He would bid the sun to shine. We, perhaps, are wiser, as we think; and we consider it hardly worth while to pray about such things, thinking that they will come in the course of nature. They believed that God was in every storm; nay, in every cloud of dust. They used to speak of a present God in everything.

BIRDS OF THE BIBLE THE EAGLE
The eagle, as you know, is a large bird with great wings which it can spread out wide when it wants to fly. It has very sharp eyes and can see a long way off. It can fly very swiftly, and mount up high into the sky so that you will hardly be able to see it. It can reach high up the rocks and mountains, and make its nest where it is difficult to find it. It was also one of those unclean birds which the Jews were not to eat. (Leviticus 11).
In the Bible God has made use of this wonderful bird, the eagle, to show what He will do with His people. You know that the children of Israel were kept in Egypt for four hundred years, and Pharaoh made them work hard in making bricks. God sent Moses to bring His people out of Egypt. Pharaoh would not let them go, but God punished him for this, and at last he had to let them go. So God set His people free, and brought them through the Red Sea, while the Egyptians were drowned in it. God said it was as if He had carried His people on eagles’ wings to bring them to Himself, We are told that the eagle carries the baby birds on its wings, and so teaches them to fly. In this way God carried His children safely and quickly out of Egypt. (Exodus 19).
Then we are told in the Bible how the eagle makes its nest on high in the rocks and mountains. But though it is so high, its eyes are so strong that it can see a long way off. There, deep down in the valley, the eagle sees a young animal or another bird, and it flies swiftly to catch it and bring it home to its nest. So it finds its food and brings some for its young ones. How sad it is though to see one animal killing another for its food. But this is all because of sin. Before Adam and Eve sinned, it was not like this, but all the animals lived together in peace. What a dreadful thing sin is! And we have it in our hearts and lives, and need to seek the Lord to give us repentance and to cleanse us from our sins.
Jesus is in heaven to give repentance and forgiveness of sins. His precious blood which He shed on the cross can cleanse from all sin. This then we need to seek and to wait upon the Lord for it. To encourage those who seek His face, the Lord has said that those that wait upon Him shall find Him. They shall walk and not faint, they shall run and not be weary, and they shall even mount up with wings as eagles, because He will so strengthen them, and bless them with answers to their prayers.
(S.F. Paul)
ELIJAH’S PRAYER (I Kings 18)
Does it not grief and wonder move,
To think of Israel’s shameful fall?
Who needed miracles to prove
Whether the Lord was God or Baal!
Me thinks I see Elijah stand,
His features glow with love and zeal;
In faith and prayer he lifts his hand,
And makes to heaven his great appeal.
“O God! If I Thy servant am,
If ‘tis Thy message fills my heart,
Now glorify Thy Holy Name,
And show this people who Thou art!”
He spake, and lo! a sudden flame
Consumed the wood, the dust, the stone;
The people struck, at once proclaim,
“The Lord is God, the Lord alone.”
Like him, we mourn, an awful day,
When more for Baal than God appear;
Like him, believers, let us pray,
And may the God of Israel hear!
Lord, if Thy servant speak Thy truth,
If he indeed is sent by Thee,
Confirm the word to all our youth,
And let them Thy salvation see.
Now may Thy Spirit’s holy fire
Pierce every heart that hears Thy word,
Consume each hurtful vain desire,
And make them know Thou art the Lord.
NEVER TELL A LIE
In warning young boys and girls always to tell the truth the minister said, “Never tell a lie, for if it is discovered you have to tell perhaps twenty more lies trying to put the first one right.”
THE CLOCK
The clock of life is wound but once,
And no man has the power
To tell just when the hands will stop
At late or early hour.
To lose one’s wealth is sad indeed.
To lose one’s health is more.
To lose one’s soul is such a loss
That no man can restore.
39 people died while you read this short poem. Every hour 5,417 go to meet their Maker. You could have been among them. Sooner or later you will be. Are you ready?

“I AM DEBTOR”
When this passing world is done,
When has sunk yon glaring sun,
When we stand with Christ in glory,
Looking o’er life’s finished story,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know —
Not till then — how much I owe:
When I hear the wicked call
On the rocks and hills to fall,
When I see them start and shrink
On the fiery deluge brink,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know —
Not till then— how much I owe.
When I stand before the throne
Dressed in beauty not my own,
When I see Thee as Thou art,
Love Thee with unsinning heart,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know —
Not till then — how much I owe.
When the praise of heaven I hear
Loud as thunders to the ear,
Loud as many waters’ noise,
Sweet as harp’s melodious voice,
Then, Lord, shall I fully know —
Not till then — how much I owe.
Even on earth, as through a glass
Darkly, let thy glory pass,
Make forgiveness feel so sweet,
Make Thy Spirit’s help so meet,
Even on earth, Lord, make me know
Something of how much I owe.
Chosen not for good in me,
Wakened up from wrath to flee,
Hidden in the Saviour’s side,
By the Spirit sanctified,
Teach me, Lord, on earth to show,
By my love, how much I owe.
Oft I walk beneath the cloud,
Dark as midnight’s gloomy shroud;
But, when fear is at the height,
Jesus comes, and all is light:
Blessed Jesus! bid me show
Doubting saints how much I owe.
When in flowery paths I tread,
Oft by sin I’m captive led;
Oft I fell, but still arise;
The Spirit comes — the tempter flies:
Blessed Spirit! bid me show
Weary sinners all I owe.
Oft the nights of sorrow reign —
Weeping, sickness, sighing, pain,
But a night thine anger burns —
Morning comes, and joy returns:
God of comforts! bid me show
To Thy poor, how much I owe.
A PROBLEM
A young man celebrated for his knowledge of mathematics lived in a village where a Godly minister was stationed. Oneday the minister met the young man, and, after some conversation, as they were about to part, addressed him: “I have heard that you are known for your mathematical ability; I have a problem which I would like you to solve.”
“What is it?” enquired the young man.
The minister replied, “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
The young man returned home and endeavoured to shake off the minister’s problem, but in vain. Again and again the question bubbled up, and he was brought at length to feel the One Thing needful was to be found in Jesus Christ.

A PRAYER
“Lord, make us truly wise,
To choose Thy people’s lot;
And earthly things despise,
Which soon shall be forgot.
The greatest evil we can fear
Is to possess our portion here.”
