Thou Hast Lacked Nothing
“For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: He knoweth thy walking through this great wilderness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing” (Deuteronomy 2:7).
There was a time when Moses and Israel might look back upon the journey which they had made. The way had been long, very long. Many things had transpired upon that way, such as hunger, thirst, serpents, etc. It was a way filled with experiences. There was, however, one great thing, which was that the Lord had been with them. He had never left them in the lurch. He had indeed punished them with the rod of His hand, but He never left Israel to themselves. God preserved and delivered them. Now, at the end of this long journey, Moses might also say, “Thou hast lacked nothing.” God had richly cared for them.
It is with such a God that we still have dealings today. There are some who say that God is dead. What poor fools are they who speak in this way. There is no other word to describe them than fools! For, “The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God.” (Psalm 14:1). However, He is the living God, and He will never put to shame those who wait for Him. With this God you can go through this life and also leave this life. Godliness has the “promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8b).
As Moses looked back, he could bring to remembrance the simplest things which concerned the daily existence of life for the people—food, drink, shoes, clothing, help in conflicts—in short, everything that was needed by them. Are they not blessed people who may rely upon such a God in their life, actually needing Him and living out of Him? The world knows nothing of this. They shrug their shoulders because it appears incomprehensible to them that there are yet people who live with a God whom the world has declared to be dead.
He is, however, the living One who has taken His people in Christ Jesus for His own account and now also takes care for everything, yes, everything. It is an experience of life from the past which gives encouragement for the future. Reflect upon this carefully. Should you not have much more need for God and seek to know Him as He desires to make Himself known? p
