“I am Alpha and Omega, the First and the Last”

The Old Year with all of its trials and tribulations, surprises and disappointments, joy and sorrow, but also with all of its guilt, sin, and shortcomings, again lies behind us. That year will never return except in the day of eternity. Then it will be a personal question for each of us. How will that year then come back to us? Will it be for our joy or our condemnation?

For most people, entering the New Year has taken place thoughtlessly. The exchange from the Old into the New Year for many has taken place in drunkenness and gluttony, all kinds of foolishness, and many more things where the time has been spent to put away thoughts of death and eternity, if something of a conscience still remains.

The great mass of people, unfortunately, no longer know anything of the meaning of hell and heaven. Even with those who confess the truth, life has become so materialistic that they follow the customs of the world. The hearts are hardened more and more, and in complacency man goes from one year into another without realizing that without regeneration no one shall enter the kingdom of heaven.

Fear may well fill our heart if we consider the seriousness of the condition in which we, our families, and the churches find ourselves. Yet, no matter how dark it is—it is becoming darker and darker under the judgments of God’s rejection and the hiding of His countenance because of our sins and our great guilt—there will be a remnant according to the election of grace. No, we do not have to provide for that. God Himself will take care of that according to His eternal counsel and the bowels of His divine mercies and lovingkindness in Christ Jesus.
