“I HAVE SINNED AGAINST GOD!”

Psalm 51:4a: “Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done evil in Thy sight.”

IN these words we note David’s confession of sin and guilt. Likewise, we all have sinned. Paul says, “We all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Some contend that there is no sin, but are in darkness and cannot see. We are so full of selfdeceit. John says, “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.”

Some say that they have committed only little or insignificant sins. Such a statement shows plainly that they are ignorant about self and sin, as Saul of Tarsus before heavenly light appeared in his soul. Later he confessed to be “the chief of sinners.” Then he was true before God and man.

Blessed are they that have received light to see and life to feel, and faith to believe. This is what this man had in his never-dying soul, saying, “For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.”

David had sinned against God. Every sin is committed against God; against the great God, our Creator. We may sin against a fellow creature but at the same time we sin against God. Against God, Who has forbidden us to sin, to trespass His holy law. We have done it with thoughts, words, and deeds; we have done it in Paradise, in Adam; we have done it all the days of our life. There are mountains of sins. David felt it and was bowed down under the heavy burden. Reader, are you burdened by your sins, too?

God knows all our sins, our trespasses. Nothing is hidden from this great God; He sees and knows all things. He looks without, but also within the heart. We blind creatures cannot do this, but He can; and He only can make us see and hear. We all have sinned against God, against Him only. We all have great sins, great debts; an open, unpaid account in heaven by God, He being the Creditor and Judge. David was painfully concerned, and had no rest in this soul condition. “I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. I am feeble and sore broken: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.” He cried: “Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free Spirit.” This is not mere talk about sin, about misery; this is experience—an experience of every one born in Zion.

David, having done evil in God’s sight, did not know the greatness of this evil when committed; but later had a true knowledge of it—he saw and felt it painfully. It was a heart-knowledge, not a head-knowledge. Blessed are all that have saving convictions of sin, guilt, and punishment.

David stands in his hell-worthiness before God; he is worthy of hell and not of heaven, and considers it a wonder of free grace that he is not in hell, and that he may yet beg for mercy. Hear this distressed soul cry, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy loving kindness.” Do you know this soul-cry? Do not deceive your valuable soul; be not deceived by others.

David is humble and abased. Pride is cast down, and cannot be seen. The crown of self and pride is overturned again and again. He is below God, and not above Him in imagination. Blessed sinner, although in deep soul misery! David is not a Pharisee, but a poor, naked, and ashamed Publican. He does not see himself as being clean and neat, but black. “I am black, Lord! I cannot wash myself!”

David does not have dry eyes, but wet eyes. His heart is not cold and hard. He weeps bitterly. Tears fall upon his sins, but they cannot wash them away. “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.”

David confesses his sins in uprightness and truth. He knows, through the blessed operations of the Spirit, that the Lord loveth truth within. He does not have this knowledge of himself, but through the Spirit. He sees nothing good in himself, only evil. He says, “I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.” Do you try to hide your sins, or make great sins appear to be small sins? Do you look upon sins of others, and not see your own abominable sins? Poor and wretched creature!

David repented of sin. Knowing sin in the light of God, he hates it. He must say with Job, “I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” He does not want to sin any more; he wants to be holy. O, could he never sin anymore! The wish of his heart was fulfilled. He has long since been in the Holy of Holies above.

David needed washing, deliverance, forgiveness. He begged and cried for it. Sinner, you too? “Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.” Jesus can cleanse, He can deliver, He can enrobe the naked soul with His righteousness. David has experienced it. For Jesus sake, God has forgiven. “And Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin.” Thus we see that David did not cry in vain to God. After weeping and sorrows, came rejoicing. Free grace! A blood that cleanses of all sin! A perfect Savior! Peace with God! All honor to Him!

This is only a brief meditation, but may God bless it. Oh, that many would be privileged to cry out, “Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned, and done evil in Thy sight!” But what if we shall live and die in sin? Die without this experience; die without a Savior!

Oh, may convicted souls, savingly convicted, have no rest without Jesus, without forgiveness, without peace with God! “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.”
