WE KNOW IT IS GOD’S BOOK
Those who have a principle of true holiness within them know that the Bible is true. They know this not by tradition. They know this not my authority of a church. They know this not by the authority of a creed. They know this not by miracles. But they know this by what Edwards would call the inward sense. They know that this Bible is a holy, divine book, like they know that honey is sweet — by the inward sense of the same.
I do not say that this inward sense ought not to be strengthened by external things. This Bible itself is a miracle, sixty-six books written over a period of fifteen hundred years or more, and yet one book with one developing theme. This Bible stands in the faith of the church universal, the faith of that invisible congregation, gathered in Spirit and truth around the gospel of Christ. This Bible stands as a holy book in its power to do holy things where preached in this world.
But essentially our devotion to this book arises from the inward sense. We have set to our seal that God is true (John 3:33). We know the doctrine that it is of God (John 7:17). We delight in the law of God after the inward man (Rom. 7:22). It is holy, just, and good (Rom. 7:12). The sanctified man meditates in the word day and night (Psalm 1:2).
