The following letter was recently sent, in the name of the Synod of the Netherlands Reformed Congregations, to President-elect Richard M. Nixon.

To the Honorable President-elect Richard M. Nixon

Dear Sir:

Permit us a few moments of your valuable time to extend you our hearty congratulations for your election to the office to which you have been chosen as President of this great republic. It is an office of great responsibility to rule a nation with such a vast multitude of people, and which have so grossly departed from God, His precepts, and our highly esteemed Constitution.

We, as subjects of this nation are exhorted in Holy Scripture that “supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; for Kings, and all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all Godliness and honesty.”

We pray, that God’s richest blessings may rest upon you and that you in these most difficult times, may follow the example of King Hezekiah in the Bible who also was called upon to rule in days of great apostasy, as he confessed, “Our fathers have trespassed and done that which was evil in the eyes of the Lord our God and have forsaken Him, and have turned away their faces from the habitation of the Lord, and have turned their backs.” It was in his heart to make a covenant with the Lord God of Israel, that His fierce wrath would turn away from them.

May you be instrumental in promoting the reinstatement of prayer and Bible reading in our schools, that you will enforce obedience to law and order, that trading with communist countries will be discontinued, and that the enemies of God and Country will no longer be permitted to mislead our beloved America.

“Blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord.”

Prayerfully and respectfully submitted, we remain sincerely yours,

THE NETHERLANDS REFORMED CONGREGATIONS OF AMERICA

The Synodical Committee,

Elder
