GOD AND HIS ATTRRIBUTES
From what does it appear that there is a God?
1. From the Holy Scriptures:
John 4:24 “God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.”
2. The harmony we observe everywhere in nature gives evidence of the existence of God:
The Almighty God is the cause of the seasons. Gen. 8:22 “While the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
3. The rational nature, or the human mind is endowed with reason, and has a cause. This all proceeds from God.
I Chron. 28:9 “For the Lord searcheth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek Him, He will be found of thee; but if thou forsake Him, He will cast thee out forever.”
4. The conceptions of general principles which are natural to man, as to the difference between things proper and improper. Conscience of man shows clearly that there is a God.
I Sam. 24:17 “And he said unto David, Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.”
5. That there is no nation, however barbarous or uncivilized but has some notion or systems of religion which presupposed a belief in God.
2 Kings 17:12 “For they served idols, whereof the Lord said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.” Isa. 40:20 etc.
6. The reproofs of conscience, which follows the commission of sin, and harass the minds of the ungodly, cannot be inflicted by anyone except God.
Rom. 2:15: “Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing one another.”
7. The rewards of the righteous and the punishment of the wicked.
2 Chron. 6:23 “Then hear thou from heaven, and do, and judge thy servants, by requiting the wicked, by recompensing his way upon his own head; and by justifying the righteous, by giving him according to his righteousness.”
8. A civil compact, governed wisely by just and wholesome laws, which the devils and wicked men generally hate and oppose.
Ps. 33:12 “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord.”
9. Heroic enthusiasm, or wisdom and virtue in undertaking and accomplishing works surpassing the ordinary powers of man. The managing of affairs, the deeds of great men.
Judges 6:14 “And the Lord said, (Gideon) Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?”
10. The prediction of future events which could have been foreknown neither by human minds. He truly is God who foretells what is to come to pass.
Isa. 7:14 “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
