BIBLE QUIZ

Dear Boys and Girls,

The month of February is the second month of the year. We do not find the month of February mentioned in the Bible, since the calendar system has changed since then. The months were then known by other names and the beginning of the year was also at a different time. However, they did have a year of twelve months, just as we do.

Throughout the year there are days which have special meaning for us. Things have happened in the past which are remembered each year again, such as birthdays, anniversaries, and also the special days of the church, such as Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, etc. These special days should make us think of the goodness of the Lord in His care for His church and also for us and our dear ones in our daily lives. There are also sad events which are brought to mind, such as accidents or the death of a loved one. Then we see the shortness of life and the certainty of eternity. Even in school certain dates are important in our history lessons, and we see the Lord’s hand as He guides the nations and rules over all things throughout the ages by means of men and their doings.

In the Bible we also find certain events took place which are brought to the minds of later generations and of us today. The Lord wanted His people to stop and think of His wonders and also of His judgments of the past, and not to forget His doings in the lives of their forefathers. In the beginning of the book of Deuteronomy Moses brings to mind the way in which the Lord had led the children of Israel, and this is spoken of more often as we read the words of the psalmist and the prophets and leaders of later years. In one of our psalters we sing,

He willed that each succeeding race

His deeds might learn and know,

That children’s children to their sons

Might all these wonders show.

The quiz this month brings to our minds some of these special events and periods of time, even some which mention the month, the day of the month, or a particular hour of the day. In the life of Noah we find two very great things which took place in the second month of the year. The first letters of our answers will spell out one of these events.

And now to answer the letters which we have received:

Leanne Neels

We were glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Leanne. The Bible has so much to say to us, and we may ask the Lord to open our ears and to open our hearts so that we may hear His Word in a right way. Do you know of some in the Bible who were still young and heard His Word?

Leona Vanden Brink

Yes, Leona, there is a great difference between our Christian schools and the public schools. We hope you may remember well what you have learned in prior years. Can you mention some young persons in the Bible who had to study at a “public school”?

Charmain Huisman

I think everyone gets too busy at times, Charmain. It is good to be busy, and idleness is not good for us. But we do read of a Martha in the Bible who was busy, and of a Mary who was also busy in a very different way. How necessary it is that we use our time wisely and well.

jenny Boesterd

Did you have snow at Christmas time, Jenny? Do you have lots of places to ski near your home? We have seen very little snow yet this winter, but the weather can change very suddenly. How is school going for you?

Anne Schelling

It was nice to hear from you, Anne, and we do want to welcome you to our Bible quiz. Having the mumps during Christmas vacation was not so nice, but you didn’t have to miss much school that way. We were very sorry to hear about your grandmother. Had she been sick for a while?

Darla Rus

Many thanks for your wishes, Darla. What did you do during your Christmas vacation? Those weeks seemed quite short, so I am sure that the vacation went by very quickly. What are you studying about at school at the present time?

Joel Stam

I am sure you would rather be at school than to be at home because of sickness, Joel. But at such a time it can’t be helped, and therefore homework lets you keep up with the rest of the class. Do you like to study? Usually there are certain subjects we like better than others.

Derek Kreft

How is Adrian? It is such a blessing when we may have good health and a good mind, but we also know that the Lord is able to give others blessings which are even greater than these. Do you know what they might be? We may ask the Lord for them for ourselves, but also for others.

Michelle Boesterd

It is nice to be together with family and friends on special occasions, Michelle. Some are not able to do so and some are brought together under sad circumstances. We can see the Lord’s care over us in many different things, but do we always think of this?

Nelly Stam

In the Bible we also read about gifts, Nelly. Can you think of some of the occasions where they are mentioned? Some are given by God, some are given to Cod, and some are given by one person to another. Can you find all of these kinds?

Cindy Kreft

Your letter is the last one this month, Cindy. Playing any kind of instrument takes lots of practice, but there is not much accomplished without hard work. It helps, of course, if you like music. We read much about music in God’s Word, especially in the Old Testament times.

To all of our young friends, and also some older ones, our thanks for your replies to the quiz and the continued response month after month. May we together learn that which is so necessary for true happiness. Ask the Lord much for that wisdom.

With love,

Your friend,

“Uncle Garret”

HOW SHOULD CHRISTIANS BEHAVE TOWARDS ONE ANOTHER?

1. Remember that we are all liable to failings of one kind or another (Ps. 119:96).

2. Bear with, and do not magnify, each other’s weaknesses (Gal. 6:1-2).

3. Pray for one another in our prayer meetings, but especially in private (Eph. 6:18).

4. Avoid going from house to house— or using the telephone to the same end—for the purpose of hearing or telling news or hearsay, or in any way interfering with the affairs of others (1 Tim. 5:13).

5. Turn a deaf ear to slanderous reports, and believe no charge brought against any one unless it is well substantiated (1 Cor. 13:4-7).

6. If a fellow Christian is really at fault, go and tell him of it between yourself and him alone. Never mention it to others unless to prevent some evil which would otherwise arise. Fervently ask the Lord to pardon the individual and preserve him in the future (Matt. 18:15).

7. Ask others to mention to you anything they see in you which is contrary to the gospel; and be grateful for every such expression of their Christian love toward you (Ps. 141:5).

8. If you have offended anyone, in word or deed, acknowledge the fact to them and ask their forgiveness (James 5:16).

9. Guard against being unduly shy or suspicious of each other, and put the best construction on anything that appears to be opposition or resentment. Remember that it is the devil’s great object to promote distance and animosity between Christians.

10. Consult the precepts of Scripture, and consider the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. To ask: How would He have acted?—will throw light on many difficult situations (1 Peter 2:21).

11. If you are offended by a fellow Christian, remember how God-like it is to forgive, and how unchristian it is to seek revenge (Col. 3:13).

12. Consider how Christian usefulness is advanced and promoted when love prevails among Christians, and what distressing and miserable effects follow when Christians behave in a contrary spirit.

13. Remember Solomon’s rule: “Leave off contention before it be meddled with” (Proverbs 17:14).

14. If offences arise and Christians disagree, try by all means in your power, and at the expense of any personal feeling, to reunite them in love. “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matt. 5:9).

15. Think often of heaven, where all real Christians, however divided on earth, will meet at last and unite in unending ascriptions of praise to “Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever” (Rev. 7:9-12).

THE SUPREME TEST

A martyr in Switzerland was standing barefooted on the faggots, about to be burned to death. He called for the magistrate who was superintending his execution, and asked him to come near him.

He said, “Will you please lay your hand upon my heart? I am about to die by fire. Lay your hand upon my heart. If it beats any faster than it ordinarily beats, do not believe my religion.”

The magistrate, with palpitating heart himself, and all in a tremble, laid his hand upon the martyr’s bosom, and found that he was just as calm as if he were going to his bed rather than to the flames. Such is the power of “the peace of God which passeth all understanding.”
