CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTS |

NATIONAL PRAYER DAY

The United States' National Day of Prayer coincides this year with Ascension Day, namely, May 4. May God grant us true prayer for our needy, sin-stained nation, and humble us before Him, for judgment begins at the house of God. Must we not confess, "We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God" (Jer. 3:25)? —JRB

ANNIVERSARY

Elder and Mrs. H. Bisschop

Rev. A.W. Verhoef and Elder VandenDorpel spoke some words at a gathering held at the Sunset Manor in commemoration of Elder and Mrs. Bisschop's (Sunset Manor, 118-8920 Broadway St., Chilliwack, BC V2P 5W1) being married for fifty-five years on March 24, 1989. Elder Bisschop has served the Chilliwack congregation as office-bearer since its inception — for twenty-one years as deacon and sixteen years as elder.

May the Lord bless this dear brother and his wife, and be their Jehovah-jireh in their senior years, confirming for them: "Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed Thy strength unto this generation, and Thy power to every one that is to come" (Ps. 71:18).

Receive our hearty congratulations and best wishes. — JRB

NEW ADDRESS

Montville, NJ 07045

MINISTERS

At the March 29, 1989 gathering of Classis Far West, Rev. M. Heerschap was granted honorable and official emeritation due to his ill health and age. His recent heart attack has proved to be more damaging to the heart than initially thought; nevertheless, he is presently recuperating as rapidly as can be expected. Most importantly, he could testify when I called him last week again that the Lord has been good to him and he may be enabled to lay all things in the hands of the Lord. Truly, there is no better place on earth than gracious, experiential, unconditional surrender.

May the Lord continue to bless our brother as emeritus minister, grant further recovery, and if it be in accord with His will, grant him to perform some labors as enabled in the unknown future. May He also strengthen Mrs. Heerschap in this time of need. Above all, dear brother, may the labors you have been enabled to perform in declaring the precious, free and sovereign grace of God for more than forty-one years, continue to be blessed to the conversion of sinners, the edification and instruction of God's people, and the glory of the Triune Name.

At the same Classis Far West gathering, Rev. A. W. Verhoef received an honorable discharge from the Classis in order to return to the Netherlands, as he has felt Iiberty to accept a pastoral call to the congregation of Beekbergen. (He hopes to spend most of May in the Netherlands making matters ready for the transition; if official papers are ready, he and his wife hope to move in July.) Several of us ministers who were present, as well as two elders (vice-president of Classis and a local consistory member) spoke words of appreciation and extended best wishes to our brother who was enabled to labor twenty years for the NRC in North America. Dear brother, also on behalf of our Banner of Truth readership and the many articles you have contributed to these pages, we wish you and Mrs. Verhoef "Godspeed."

May the Lord sustain and provide for the Lethbridge and Chilliwack congregations in their needs and sorrow, and send these flocks undershepherds of His choosing in the near future. The loss of these ministers to Classis Far West presents us with the sad reality that this entire Classis will soon have no non-retired ministers. (Rev. H. Hofman was appointed moderator of Chilliwack, Lynden, and Artesia; Rev. J. Den Hoed, of Lethbridge, Fort McLeod, and Sunnyside.) Sadly, our denomination of nearly 10,000 souls spanning thousands of miles in distance, will now be reduced to five non-retired pastors. What incredible needs we have!

On the other hand, there is also an encouraging note: Due to the large number of consistorial attests received this year, the Curatorium has decided to meet for two full days, the Lord willing, namely, June 27-28. May God's people among us receive grace to double their petitions for these days, praying the Lord of the harvest that He may thrust forth servants into the harvest.

"O Lord, revive Thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy" (Hab. 3:2).

3-DAY YOUTH CONFERENCE

(Classis Far West)

We have been able to reserve both the same speakers and location as last year for this summer's Youth Conference to be held July 18-21, the Lord willing. The site reserved is Bear Paw Retreat and Conference Center near the Washington/Idaho border.

Speakers for the Conference will include Rev. J.R. Beeke, Evangelist B. Elshout, Elder J.W. Beeke, and Elder K. Herfst.

Young people desiring to attend from local congregations will need to meet together to organize group bus (or van) transportation, as no individual cars are permitted at the camp. Young people from more-distant localities should contact the conference coordinator for making arrangements in this regard.

The total conference/camp costs are $55 (US) or $70 (Can.) per person —this includes all food and lodging expenses, as well as full use of the facilities.

Young people fifteen years of age through twenty-five (or older, if single) desiring more information are invited to request information packet and reservation form from the camp coordinator listed below.

May God graciously bless this opportunity for providing meaningful topics for instruction, times for discussion, and opportunities to meet one another as young people from" our congregations. — Conference Planning Committee

Mr. B. Boesterd, Conference Coordinator (604) 823-6647

YOUTH DAY CONFERENCE

Obituary notices are printed free of charge and are submitted by the officiating minister; marriage and anniversary notices will be charged at $5.00 per issue and must be individually submitted. Other announcements and/or requests will be approved by the editorial committee on an individual basis as received. (Church events or school needs, such as upcoming classical meetings, "teachers wanted," office-bearer conferences or youth day conferences will be announced free of charge.)

To place an announcement, simply type (or print neatly) your information, enclose $5.00, and forward to "News and Events," 2115 Romence St. N.E., Grand Rapids, Ml 49503 by the 5th of the month preceding publication.

FUNDS NEEDED: URGENT APPEAL

At our April 12,1989 Classis East meeting, Classis requested the placement of an urgent appeal for private donations and/or additional church collections for the five following causes, all of which have their financial resources nearly depleted and are in danger of having future efforts hampered by lack of funds:

Netherlands Reformed Book and Publishing Committee

Mr. A. Slootmaker, Treasurer

15 Eugene Circle, Lincoln Park, NJ 07035

This committee provides books (especially translated works from Dutch) for youth and adults in our congregations. Presently, Evangelist Elshout would be able to work part-time in the translation of one of two classic works, Alexander Comrie's Properties of Saving Faith or Wilhelmus Brakei's Reasonable Religion (cf. additional information on page 129). Lack of funds, however, is prohibiting these worthy projects from proceeding. Also, several titles (including More Than Conquerors by Rev. Kersten) will soon be ready for printing but there are not sufficient funds.

Student Support Fund of the Netherlands Reformed Theological School

Elder J. Beeke, Treasurer

5604 West "N" Ave., Kalamazoo, Ml 49009

The balance of this fund has grown precariously low. Monies are needed now to continue to support our present (and hopefully future) students and instructors, as well as to cover expenses for the seminary's library, etc.

Macedonia Mission Society

Mr. A. Slootmaker, Treasurer

15 Eugene Circle, Lincoln Park, NJ 07035

This committee is responsible for the translation and printing of "blue book" sermons, as well as for Vreugdenhil's "Words of Wisdom" and "Church History," etc. For a variety of reasons, costs have substantially increased of late; hence, funds are urgently needed to continue this work at its present pace.

Inheritance Publishers

Mr. R. Westrate, Treasurer

2060 44th St., SE, Kentwood, Ml 49508

This committee typesets, prints, and mails out little sermon booklets taken from mostly out-of-print works of the forefathers. Approximately 1 7,500 booklets are mailed out of each printing to many countries. Due to price increases for printing and mailing, funds are becoming depleted.

Emeritus Fund Committee

108 Pratt Road, Kalamazoo, Ml 49001

This committee which consists of the consistory of the Kalamazoo, Michigan congregation, is appointed to carry out the duties required to care for retired (emeritus) ministers and their wives in accordance with Article 13 of the Church Order of Dort. Funds are substantially diminished.

Dear friends, let us bind together as individuals and congregations to assist these worthy causes. Dear consistories, if an additional church collection could also be taken for any of these causes, this would be most appreciated. Contribute as you are enabled and receive our hearty thanks in advance on behalf of the committees involved.

On behalf of Classis East,

—JRB

DENNIS BYLE

On April 18,1989, it pleased the Lord to remove from this life Dennis Byle, a former office-bearer who had served the Covell Ave. (Turner) congregation with love for thirty-five years as deacon and four years as elder.

We wish to commend to you the mourning family, especially his dear widow, Mrs. Byle, to whom he was married for nearly fifty-two years.

Funeral services were conducted from Hebrews 13:5b, '"I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."

May the Lord comfort the bereaved widow, children, grandchildren, and other relatives as He alone is able to do.

CURRENT EVENTS

The "Freedom from Religion Foundation" Asks for Removal of Gideon Bibles

The Madison, Wl group's spokesman claims that "The Bible makes gruesome, unsavory bedtime reading" and tries to "proselytize a captive audience" with "an insensitive invasion of privacy." They are placing red stickers on the Gideon Bibles calling attention to their claims. In many hotels and motels, the Gideons place King James Version Bibles as a service to the patrons. An executive for Gideons International said they will just continue placing Bibles and replacing defaced ones. The anti-Bible organization's name says enough about it to make further comment unnecessary. We all are members, by nature.

Ordination of Women Increased/ Literal Value of Scripture Questioned

According to a recent study conducted by the National Council of Churches, 7.9% of all full time U.S. clergy are now women, up 98% since 1977. Despite clear biblical prohibitions against the place of women in the ministerial office (1 Cor. 14:34,35), 84 of 166 U.S. denominations ordain women to the full ministry.

Another survey, made among members of the Presbyterian Church (USA), indicated that only 5% of the clergy and 16% of the membership surveyed believe the Bible should be taken literally (accepted as God's Word). More than 75% agreed with the belief that people who have never heard of Jesus Christ won't be damned. May we be preserved from the "strong delusions" God has warned would be sent upon the earth in these latter days.

Freedom of Religion Denied in the Name of "Marital Status" Discrimination

The Feb. issue of Concerned Women of America reports that a California administrative judge ruled against Evelyn Smith, a widowed landlord, saying the state had an overriding interest in protecting the right of unmarried couples to live together! Mrs. Smith refused to rent one of her four apartments to an unmarried couple stating that doing so would violate her biblical principles. The judge ordered Smith to pay the couple $454 dollars, plus interest, and to hang a notice on the wall of her rental units explaining the lawsuit and the fact that she lost. CWA attorney Jordan Lorence who represented Mrs. Smith, explains, "The state is ordering her, in essence, to post a notice saying that her religious beliefs are wrong and illegal, according to the state government." The decision, if accepted by the state Commission on Fair Employment and Housing, will be appealed by CWA. Mrs. Smith stated last year that she will stop renting entirely if the state orders her to allow unmarried couples to rent them. How many of us would be willing to sacrifice our main source of income because of our religious beliefs?

Supreme Court Reviews Constitutionality of Anti-Dial-A-Porn Law

Last year Congress passed a law banning interstate dial-a-porn messages. In July, a U.S. District Judge upheld the ban on "obscene" material but judged that the ban on "indecent" material was too broad. The Supreme Court has agreed to review an appeal by Sabel Communications of California which is trying to overturn the entire law.

In a related note, a Federal Communications Commission rule that would have completely banned "indecent" programs from regular television has been struck down as unconstitutional by the District of Columbia Federal Circuit Court of Appeals after seventeen groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and People for the American Way, appealed for an overturn of the rule.

One cannot wonder what our forefathers would have thought of the present interpretation of the First Amendment free speech provision of the Constitution. We certainly can know something of what God views it as.

AIDS Report Misses the Point

CWA's March Capitol Hill Report cited a National Research Council report which recommended that the federal government sponsor more research of AIDS incidence, sexual behavior, and drug abuse as a way to curb the spread of the disease. They felt that it was better to seek to "change risky behavior by offering choices rather than promoting appropriate behavior, such as abstinence. Such choices include explicit sex education for the young and increased availability of condoms and sterile needles."

It is again evident that the word "sin" is becoming more unknown and unpopular in governmental and scientific circles. Thus, we seek to find a way to counteract the consequences of sin while ignoring the sinfulness of sin. May the Lord show us the folly of compromising with sin and give us uncompromising faith instead.

Pro Life Update

The state of Kentucky can begin enforcing a 1986 law requiring parental consent or a judge's approval for a minor to have an abortion, the National and International Religion Report said in its March 13th issue. The law is presently being reviewed by the federal appeals court.

Private Schools Growing in Numbers

Focus on the Family's March magazine reported that the number of private schools in America has increased by 54% since 1977 (16,600 to 25,600 schools).

An additional educational note: According to a survey of the National Science Teachers Association, one-third of high school biology teachers in the U.S. said they believe in creationism rather than the theory of evolution.

Was Something Missed in the Mail?

In 1988, the Surgeon General had directed the Centers for Disease Control and the U.S. Public Health Service to devise and distribute a brochure about AIDS to each American household. While the eight-page brochure described in simple terms all kinds of facts known about AIDS, it left out one important word — sin. It seems that no public officials of high rank wish to openly associate this dreadful disease with a lifestyle which God's Word clearly condemns. While there is a great cry made to find a cure and to educate the nation, where is the call to national repentance? What better education could be encouraged in such a crisis than to direct the citizenry to the Bible? Let us seek grace to be among those who deeply repent of our national condition. May we be given true compassion for the ignorant and those who are out of the way, praying for the healing of the great breach sin has made between our nation and the Lord.

Are Soviet Christians Free?

The answer depends on whom you ask. The U.S. State Department announced in February that all religious prisoners had been released. Several "monitoring" services agreed. But the "Open Doors" ministry contends that about twenty-four Christians remain in prisons.

Supreme Court Refuses to Hear "Tennessee Textbook Case"

After six years of court battles, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a very significant case concerning the rights of parents to request public schools to provide alternative reading materials to replace books deemed "religiously objectionable" by parents. Thus, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals decision stands, as well as the expulsion of about a dozen students who refused to read the books. The books in question were very critical of Christianity and basic Christian beliefs. It seems that in an age where all kinds of discrimination are fought against by the courts and in the media, discrimination against Christianity seems perfectly acceptable to the same. One can see the real possibility of the return of persecutions of Christians, even in the "land of the free," if the Lord does not intervene. Persecution usually begins with a step-by-step renunciation of Christian beliefs, rights, and practices on a national level. May our eyes be opened for, and our prayers attuned to, the signs of the times.—DL/RVS

Do I Love Him: "Yes" or "No"?

Does your conscience condemn you because of your sin, which is only known to God and your own soul? Are their times that you are sorrowful because of the sin of your heart as well as of your actual sin, the sin of your negligence in prayer, reading, and communion with God, and confess that you are a beast before God?

Isn't it a time of joy to you when your heart is overwhelmed because of your sin, when the Lord grants you to see them, and you no longer try to cover your sin, but confess them with liberty, and flee to the fullness that there is in Christ Jesus, for His reconciliation?

Have you times that your heart loves Jesus as King as well as Priest? Do you often call upon Him with a request that He will root out all things which are not submissive to His will; and would it not be to your joy, that with power you were renewed to the image of God in knowledge, righteousness and holiness from day to day?

Do you find that you have an inward desire to all the commandments of the Lord, to see the beauty of them, and with an ardent desire to keep them? Does your soul have a sincere respect and love for the true children of God? If this is your condition, oh, seek that your soul may no longer dwell in uncertainty, but based upon God's Holy Word, place your condition sure; for the true marks of grace are in you, which flow from the change you have experienced.

— Dr. Alexander Comrie

Joy

Joy is a fruit that will not grow
In nature's barren soil;
All we can boast, till Christ we know,
Is vanity and toil.
But where the Lord hath plantedgrace,
And made His glories known,
These fruits of heavenly joy and peace
Are found, and there alone.
