CURATORIUM MEETING
The Curatorium hopes to meet on June 26, 1990, at 9 a.m. in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the Lord willing. At this time, the Curatorium hopes to meet with those who may have received a consistorial attest with respect to either a ministerial or ministerial-missionary calling.
Any male member of our denomination, who may believe that the Lord has converted him and called him to the ministry of God’s Word as pastor or missionary, should ask to be heard pertaining to this calling by his local consistory. When the consistory feels they may grant a consistorial attest, this attest must then be forwarded to the clerk of the Curatorium prior to May 15.

Rock Valley, Iowa 51247
A list of questions will then be sent to the consistory(ies) for completion.
May the Lord gladden us with His deeds in 1990 by calling and sending forth those who have been set aside by the King of His church to labor in His vineyard. May the Lord bind the need for men, who by the grace of God, may fill the empty pulpits within our denomination, upon the hearts of all of you. He is the same God who once said, “Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver?”

ANNIVERSARY
SOUTH HOLLAND
On Thursday evening, January 25, 1990, the True Dutch Reformed Church of South Holland marked its 125th Anniversary with a special service of thanksgiving. As moderator, Dr. J.R. Beeke led the service by preaching from Malachi 3:6, “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” His theme was Jehovah Refusing to Consume His Church. Rev. J. Spaans spoke a few words on behalf of Classis East, and wished the South Holland congregation the Lord’s richest blessings in the coming years. Besides members of the congregation, friends from Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario were also present, but due to the inclement weather, friends from sister churches in Iowa were unable to come to this service as they had planned to do. Also present were several persons who are the descendents of members of the congregation in former generations. After the church service, an hour of fellowship was held in the reception room of Rest Haven South.
The hour of fellowship was closed with a few words and prayer by the Rev. Gerrit Bieze of Athens, Ontario, who has written a historical sketch of the congregation’s 125-year history, entitled A Remnant Remains. That title is based upon a revelation from the Lord to Mrs. Meinders (wife of Rev. Meinders) in 1890 that though the congregation was very small, it would not come to naught because “a remnant would remain.”
The South Holland congregation was officially organized on Friday, January 27, 1865, by Rev. William H. van Leeuwen and Elder Jacobus de Jonge of Grand Rapids, Michigan, as the True Dutch Reformed Church (CRC) of South Holland. In 1886 the congregation withdrew from the Christian Reformed Church and became an independent congregation until 1909, when it affiliated with the newly-organized Netherlands Reformed Congregations in North America. It was served by the Rev. Ede Luurs Meinders from March 1874 until his death in July 1904.
Since 1904, the congregation has been without a pastor, but throughout these nearly eighty-six years the congregation has continued to have worship services every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., as well as midweek services when a minister from a sister church comes to preach. For many years (1947-1984) midweek services were conducted by the Rev. W.C. Lamain.
The congregation is still small in number, but is growing. December 17,1989, was also a day of momentous importance for the South Holland congregation as five persons made public profession of faith and two young children were baptized. Dr. Beeke preached on 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through His poverty might be rich.” Two of the five who made profession of faith were also baptized as adults. We must humbly acknowledge the Lord for His ongoing work of maintaining His church. He is faithful, and thus a remnant remains.
APPRECIATION
We wish to express our wholehearted appreciation for the prayers, cards, and tokens of love given on our behalf in the passing away of our little daughter, Renae Dawn.

FUNERAL SERVICE OF WILLIAM SUYKER AT GRAND RAPIDS
On January 31,1990, William Suyker passed away at the age of 65. He served our congregations as minister for sixteen years—Krabben-dijke, The Netherlands (1962-1965), Lisse, The Netherlands (1965-1972), Unionville, Ontario (1972-1975), and Rock Valley, Iowa (1975-1978). He endured much suffering the last months of his life, but often confessed to us his unworthincss to receive the least token of divine mercy.
Funeral services were held in Grand Rapids on February 3. His personal request was that the funeral message be based on Isaiah 38:14b, “O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.” As he desired to be buried near his children in Ontario, his body was transported to Norwich where an additional service was held.
May the Lord strengthen the mourning widow and family, enabling them also to experience an “undertaking” Surety for needy, oppressed souls.
The following notes were taken by Rev. DenBoer who was present in Grand Rapids at the time of the funeral:
Rev. Beeke read Isaiah 38:9-20 and opened with prayer. He began this funeral service by pointing to the shortness of life, which has become reality in the life of Brother Suyker. What a privilege when we may be prepared! The Lord gave you, Mrs. Suyker, freedom to believe that your husband has received a better portion, for you have told us that you may believe he is above all strife. This is only possible out of free grace. There is no ground in our works. The last prayer which you have heard from the lips of your husband and father was also the very words with which he requested to be buried. You can find these words in Isaiah 38:14b: “O Lord, I am oppressed; undertake for me.”
These words were spoken by the God-fearing King Hezekiah, well known for his zeal and reformation. He followed the Lord and did not turn to the left nor to the right. And the Lord was with him. It pleased the Lord to lead him more deeply into the steps of grace through adversity and serious sickness which led to a message of impending death.
Such a “message of death” is known to everyone whom the Lord convinces of sin. They cannot exist before the Lord. Hezekiah turned his face to the wall. He wanted to be alone with God. He wept sore and spent the night in prayer, but did not find relief. He felt that his life would soon end, “O Lord, I am oppressed.” The Lord used this sickness to bring him to an end with everything from his side. This is necessary for all of us without exception.
What does it mean to be oppressed? The Lord uses it to convince of sin. Hezekiah becomes a great beast before God. He sees his sins and their power. He was convicted of original and actual sin, sins of commission and omission. Sometimes the sin of omission becomes a heavier burden than the sins of commission. An oppressed sinner is a burdened sinner because he cannot live to the honor of God. So Hezekiah felt oppressed. He lost all grounds and expectation from himself.
Abo your father and husband knew this oppression. This gave a sanctified sorrow in his heart By our sins the holy attributes of God are attacked and then it becomes the great question for a poor sinner: How can I exist before God? Here the law becomes a schoolmaster to Christ.
We have met your husband and father in different circumstances. Sometimes he might believe and at other times he could not believe. It went up and down in his life. During our last visit, he asked: “Tell me, how I can believe?” This is not an unknown language for the living church. Has a missing God ever become your heaviest burden? Have you experienced that you are not able to return to the Lord in your strength? It is not only sin and the law which testifies against the oppressed, but also that they have no eye to look towards Christ. In the past they may have beheld Him, but they cannot make use of Him when faith is not in exercise.
God’s people also feel oppressed by their great poverty in the way of sanctification. This oppresses their soul, producing Paul’s confession, “Oh, wretched man that I am!* Then they confess to have no rights left as your husband and father often said in his suffering: “It is right; for I deserve it” Each of God’s children must confess: I have rewarded good with evil. All these deep ways, as Hezekiah must experience, are to the welfare of their soul. He cries out: “Like a crane or a swallow, so did I chatter; I did mourn as a dove.” The world also mourns in great oppression, but this sorrow is a sorrow after God. In his oppression he flees to God: “Undertake forme.” Now Christ becomes necessary. He must mediate for him. The word “undertake” signifies “a surety.” Judah undertook for Benjamin when he confessed to Jacob, “I will be surety for him.”
Dear children of God, it is as if the Lord Jesus says: “I will be Surety for him. Thou shalt require it from my hand.” Therefore there will be not one place empty in heaven. There is room for publicans and sinners, washed in the blood of the Lamb. He is the greater Judah; He is our righteousness. In ourselves we are hell-worthy, but He is perfect. Think of the “heroes of faith” in Hebrews 11: They were all sinners, but not one of their sins is mentioned in that chapter. Do you know why? Because they are washed away by the blood of Christ The sins of all God’s people are not mentioned, because Christ gave satisfaction. The more we may learn of this miracle, the greater the wonder becomes.
Mrs. Suyker, children, and grandchildren, we have to learn something of this oppression before we learn to cry out, “Undertake for me.” May the Lord fill the empty place with His presence. Bring all your needs before the Lord who is able to fill all your needs. Christ is the perfect Surety who never disappoints a waiting soul. Amen.
After Rev. Beeke closed with prayer, and Psalter 141 was sung, Mr. G. Suyker, the oldest son of the family, spoke a word of thanks on behalf of his mother and family:
Rev. Beeke and friends, we thank you on behalf of our mother for the friendship you have shown to our parents, especially in the last days of father’s life, Also the consistory and the board of the Plymouth Manor are to be thanked. Mr. Zwemer, a friend from Holland who came over, the doctors and medical staff of St. Mary’s Hospital, and several others: “Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward” (Matt. 10:42).
At Norwich, Rev. Beeke spoke from Job 14:1 -3 in English and Rev. Spaans spoke in Dutch from Job 1:20b-22. Rev. Beeke, Mr. Zwemer, and Mr. G, Suyker spoke a few words at the graveside.

CURRENT EVENTS
ACTION TO BE CONSIDERED
First Euthanasia Case Before U.S. Supreme Court
In mid-December, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Cruzan v. Director of Missouri Department of Health euthanasia case (see March ‘89 Banner Current Events for background information). It is expected that a decision will not be handed down for months. We ask that this grave issue be laid before the Lord. May He overturn this matter for good, to His honor and the elderly’s and disabled’s preservation.
Canadian Pro-Abortion Bill Introduced by Justice Minister Lewis
Justice Minister Doug Lewis introduced an abortion bill on Nov. 3rd which would virtually permit abortion-on-demand from conception until birth. The bill states that abortion is illegal except if a doctor believes a woman’s life or health is threatened by the pregnancy. “Health” would include anything from depression to economic welfare, etc. The Justice Minister himself had agreed that if a pregnant woman tells her doctor that she will be depressed if the pregnancy is continued that would be sufficient for a legal abortion under the law.
The pro-abortion Democratic Party is against the bill because it did not require “equal access” to abortion facilities across the country. Canadian Parliament members are free to vote according to conscience on moral issues like this, but pro-life Cabinet ministers will be forced to either resign the cabinet to vote against the bill or vote against their conscience for it. (Cabinet Ministers are required to vote in favor of government bills in order to uphold the notion of government solidarity.) Prime Minister Mul-roney has stated in the past that any abortion vote would be a “free vote” (by conscience) but now seems determined to have a pro-abortion bill passed. It is important that each of our members contact your MP, if you haven’t already, expressing your disapproval of the Justice Minister’s bill, and that you would like to see abortion banned under Canadian law.
Equal Access Cases Won by Pro-religious Groups
In separate cases in Florida and Mississippi, and in other places across the U.S., local libraries have been ordered by the courts to end their practice of barring the use of their facilities to Christian groups for meetings because of religious content Courts have consistently upheld the rights of such groups to meet as long as the facility has allowed other outside groups to use the facilities. If any readers know of such discriminatory instances in their locality, contact CWA Legal Defense Program, PO Box 65453, Washington, D.C. 20035 or the Rutherford Institute, PO Box 510, Manassas, VA 22110.
U.S. Supreme Court to Hear Child Pornography Case
The November Christian World Report indicates that the Supreme Court will hear arguments concerning the constitutionality of a 1984 Ohio law making possession of child pornography illegal. May we be given prayer for the justices who need light from above and internal, personal grace to carry on their weighty tasks in accordance with Cod’s Word.
Bills to Oppose
It is reported that quick passage will be sought on Senate bills S.110 and S.120 in the current session. These bills promote giving more tax money to Planned Parenthood, establishing school-based health clinics, and per-mitU.S. testing of the abortion pill RU-486, kill the government’s sexual abstinence education program, and re-route money from adoption-emphasis projects to abortion-emphasis projects under the Title XX spending program. Both bills are worthy of our opposition and letters, sealed with petitions to heaven, to our representatives are needed.
The ABC Child care bill (S.5 and H.R.3), which would causes billions of tax dollars to be spent on government sponsored and regulated day care centers, is scheduled to be considered around the time this article is read. We urge our readership to speak against this bill also.
A pro-abortion bill, forcing states to allow abortion on demand for all nine months of pregnancy, will also be considered soon. The House version is HR 3700 and the Senate version is S 1912.
Corporations Funding Major Abortion / Sex Education Provider
Our readers might be surprised to find a favorite product made by a company which contributes to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion-provider and a leading sex education promoter. Planned Parenthood gets about 1 /3 of its $299 million dollar annual budget from tax dollars and roughly 2/3 from corporate sponsors. Some of our readers may wish to consider contacting one of the companies listed to protest this practice, or may join others in a boycott of that company’s product Most local libraries have the addresses for these companies or they can be sent to you, together with a list of products each sells, by contacting Current Events (address listed in the “Operation Rescue” article below). The companies include American Express, AT&T, Bristol-Myers, Cargill, Chase Manhattan, Chemical Bank, Citicorp/Citibank, Dayton Hudson, General Milk, BP America (formerly Standard Oil), H.J. Heinz, Honeywell, Lubrizol, Morgan Guaranty Trust, Pillsbury, Prudential, Rockwell International, Scott Paper, Winn-Dixie Stores, Xerox.
INFORMATION
Chinese Bibles
Amity Printing press has recently released the one-millionth Chinese Bible. This press is located in Nanjing, China. May the Lord bless the means to that spiritually deprived nation.
FCC to Regulate Dial-a-Pom
Both the U.S. House and Senate passed legislation giving the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the authority to regulate phone-based pornography messages.
Christian Student Newspapers Allowed by Colorado District Court
U.S. District Court Judge Matsch ruled on Sept. 14 that students have a constitutional right to distribute publications at their high school, including those promoting Christian values.
Canadian Judge rules Pornography a “Necessary Temptation”
Incredibly, Justice Scott Wright of the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench ruled that most pornography, including hard-core pornography, is legal and protected by the Canadian Constitution as “freedom of expression” and is further a “temptation (that) is necessary to allow people to choose to be right minded, or moral, or not.” However, Winnipeg police reportedly will continue to seize pornographic material until a higher court reviews the ruling. May we see this as another serious warning that the Lord is leaving us over to the evil of our hearts as a society, and an urging for the imploring of His reforming grace.
Swedes Plan to Test Abortion Pill RU-486
Reuter News Service reports that a Swedish hospital plans to become the first in the world to begin testing the abortion pill RU-486 as a contraceptive. The study has probably begun by the printing of this article and its results are likely to be presented this coming summer. It is feared that this pill, whether legalized or not in the United States and Canada, will be available via the “black market” and radically change the abortion picture in both countries. This pill allows a woman to abort her child without having to go to a clinic or other medical facility. Ironically, the developer of the French abortion pill was recently awarded America’s most prestigious medical award (the Alber Lasker Medical Research Award) for clinical or applied research.
Abortion Commonplace and Legal in U.S.S.R.
Christian World Report quoted Soviet Deputy Premier Alexandra Biryukova as making the following statements:
• The average Soviet woman has nine abortions during her child-bearing years.
• About 6.5 million abortions are done yearly in the U.S.S.R., one million more than the number of yearly births.
• 90% of first pregnancies are aborted.
• Between 600 and 700 women die annually as a result of legalized abortion. May the Lord open the eyes of those who are murdering at such an alarming rate, and mercifully overturn and forgive such staggering numbers of sinners. May our hearts go out in prayerful compassion for those in this and other countries using this heinous practice.
Pro-Life Movement at Critical Juncture
As you are likely aware, the Supreme Court is presently re-considering either much or all of the infamous Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case of 1973 which “legalized” abortion. With the Webster decision of last spring, it is clear the “battle” between pro-death and pro-life positions will rest in each state’s legislature and with each state’s governor. The January 22 issue of the National Right to Life News outlines methods of organizing grass-root state and local support for pro-life legislation. You can obtain a free copy of this special 32-page commemorative issue which brings the reader up-to-date on the pro-life movement, or for information on ordering bulk copies, write to Current Events, 1027 N. 28th Street, Sheboygan, Wl. (414-459-9615). May the Lord be pleased to bring back into many hearts the abhorrence of sin which we have forfeited in our fall and continue to suppress by daily iniquities.
Come Boldly
Come boldly to a throne of grace,
Ye wretched sinners, come;
And lay your load at Jesus’feet
And plead what He has done.
“How can I come ?” some soul may say,
‘Tm lame, and cannot walk;
My guilt and sin have stopped my mouth;
I sigh, but dare not talk.”
Come boldly to the throne of grace,
Though lost, and blind, and lame;
Jehovah is the sinner’s Friend,
And ever was the same.
He makes the dead to hear His voice;
He makes the blind to see;
The sinner lost He came to save,
And set the prisoner free.
Come boldly to the throne of grace,
For Jesus fills the throne;
And those He kills He makes alive;
And hears the sigh or groan.
Poor bankrupt souls, who feel and know
The hell of sin within,
Come boldly to the throne of grace;
The Lord will take you in.
