BIBLE QUIZ
Dear Boys and Girls,
It is again time for another Bible quiz. This month we have a quiz sent us again by a young friend in Grand Rapids. The subject of the quiz is answered prayer, and most of the questions will show us how the Lord does answer the cry of those who call upon Him.
Prayer should be an important part of every day for us, since we are such needy ones. We need the Lord day in and day out, moment by moment, in all that we are and in all that we do. Our breath is in His hand, said Job, and the apostle Paul said, “In Him we live, and move, and have our being.” If we think of this, then isn’t prayer very necessary?
David said, “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray and cry aloud,” and in another Psalm he said, “Seven times a day do I praise Thee.” Daniel also prayed three times a day in front of an open window towards Jerusalem. But we may be sure that there were other times of prayer, just as with Nehemiah, who was praying as he stood before the king, performing his daily duties. How often do you pray?
The apostle Paul wrote, “Pray without ceasing.” Perhaps you would say, “How is that possible?” Have you heard the story about the servant girl who explained to a group of ministers how she did this? These ministers were talking about the words, “Pray without ceasing” and were speaking about how to do this. When the servant girl came into the room, she overheard them and gave them her explanation. She told how that in the morning when she saw the sun arise, she prayed that the Lord would send the Sun of Righteousness in her heart. As she washed herself, she prayed that the Lord would wash her, saying, “Wash me, make me clean within.” When she put on her clothes, she prayed that the Lord would dress her in the robe of righteousness which the Lord Jesus had merited. As she ate her breakfast, she prayed that the Lord would feed her with the bread of life and give her of the waters of life. Throughout the entire day everything she did, dusting, sweeping, mending, all reminded her of her needs and brought a prayer to her lips.
For us too there is reason enough to pray, and God’s Word tells us that He does answer prayer. The first letters of the answers will spell out the words which the Lord Himself has spoken by means of Jeremiah. You will find these words in Jeremiah 3.

Again there are letters to answer —
Cindy Kreft
It was nice to hear about your work in the hospital, Cindy. You can always find people there who are in need. When we see the many sick ones in the hospital, we must stop to think of the blessings we have if we may have good health. Do you also work in the area of the newborn babies?
Janella Amoldussen
How is your aunt doing with her Spanish lessons, Janella? Did you learn some Spanish words when you visited with her? We have lived in Kalamazoo our whole lifetime, but it is always nice to travel and visit other places. But every day we should be reminded that we are also travellers together to eternity.
Lisa De Bruin
It was nice to hear from you, Lisa. I talked to your grandfather recently, and he told me that you would be writing a letter. Maybe he also told how we stayed on the farm with his family many years ago. We will never forget that. Do you live on a farm now? The Lord willing, perhaps we can visit you sometime.
Elise Vander Spek
We have a fair amount of snow at the present, Elise. Snow on the roads makes driving difficult, but it certainly is a beautiful sight to see the snow cover the ground. It may be said that it also is a display of God’s handiwork. The psalmist spoke of something else which showed God’s handiwork. Do you know what it was?
Aline Bosch
It was nice to receive your long letter, Aline. I’m sure the holidays are slipping by quite rapidly. Seven weeks seems like a long time, but is soon past. The Bible says that our days are like a shadow, and how true it is. I hope to hear more about all the things you are finding to do during your holidays.
Joanne Noorduyn
Now that you have a chalk board, you can be the teacher for your brothers, Joanne. Would you like to be a teacher when you grow up, if the Lord spares you? We can make many plans, but they don’t always happen as we plan them. We must ask the Lord to lead us in the way that we should go, just as the psalmist did.
Daniel Ceuze
I had to look at the map of New Zealand to see where you had been, Daniel, since I don’t know a lot about your country. Every time I receive a letter, I am learning something new. In the Bible we also read often about fish. The waters of the world contain many different kinds of fish, each having its own special characteristics.
Kelly Ziegler
We are glad to have you join in answering the Bible quiz, Kelly. We too find that there is always more to learn from the Bible, and therefore learning continues even until old age. There are many grandparents who are looking for the names of their grandchildren in the list and who are happy to find them there. We hope to hear from you next month.
Geraldine De Boer
Thank you for the greetings at the end of the year, Geraldine. As you read this, we are already well into another year. When we see the events in the world among the nations, we can have many concerns. How we should, with the people of Nineveh, cry mightily unto God. Who can tell…?
Suzanne Van Den Bosch
Did the exams turn out quite well, Suzanne? To be tested is never so enjoyable, but it will happen time and again in our lives, and that from all sides. We read of it often also in the Bible. True, they are not exactly the same as school exams, but we quickly see what we are capable of doing, especially if left over to ourselves.
Jorica Aleman
How are you feeling now, Jorica? Sickness is to be found throughout the world, and all are the result of our fall in Paradise. It is a blessing that medicines are available, and that the Lord blesses their use. We read that Hezekiah had a bad boil on his body, but do you know what was prescribed for it?
Mary Bosch
Do you have quite a few pen-pals, Mary? Writing letters can keep you very busy, and I always seem to fall behind in my letter writing. But to receive letters, you have to write also, and everyone likes to receive a letter. Give our greetings to your parents and thank them for the New Year wishes.
Derek Kreft
I suppose it isn’t ideal weather for the motor bike now, Derek, even if you have got it running again. Do you still have some of your puppies left? You really had a large family of them to take care of for a while. We read about venison also in the Bible. Do you know where that is to be found?
Jonathan Amoldussen
Yes, Jonathan, there was a mistake on my part again. We just can’t seem to avoid them once in a while, but it is always good to see that the boys and girls are checking closely in working out the quiz. Did you have a good trip to Chilliwack? From what we have heard, the weather hasn’t been that ideal for driving in your area.
Hendrika Boeder
Thank you for the picture, Hendrika. I sometimes look back at the pictures I have accumulated from the boys and girls over the years. Many of them are now parents whose children are answering the Bible quiz at present. Then we do realize how old we are becoming.
This finishes our letters for this month. Many thanks to all again for your answers to the quiz, and also for the greetings sent us at the end of the year. May the Lord truly bless us with our loved ones together.
With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”

A REBUKE TO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE WEATHER
“While the earth remaineth, seed-time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.”
—Genesis 8:22
A minister going to church one Lord’s day morning, when the weather was extremely cold and stormy, was overtaken by one of his neighbors, who, shivering said to him, “If s very cold, sir.”
“Oh,” replied the minister, “God is still as good as His Word.”
The other was surprised at his remark, not understanding what he meant, or what he referred to, and asked him what he meant.
“Mean?” replied he, “why, He promised more than three thousand years ago, and He still makes His word good that while the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, shall not cease.”
SIN FOUND OUT
Mr. Clarke, in his Examples, relates the account of two French merchants who were travelling to a fair, and while passing through a wood, one of them murdered the other and robbed him of his money. After burying him, to prevent discovery, he proceeded on his journey. The dog of the person murdered remained, however, by the grave of his master; and by his loud and continued howling, attracted the notice of several persons in the neighborhood, who by this means discovered the murder. The fair being ended, they watched for the return of the merchants. The murderer no sooner appeared in view than the dog sprung furiously upon him. He was apprehended, confessed the crime, and was justly executed.
TOO LATE
“And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man.”
—Genesis 6:3
A young woman, who had lived negligent of the great salvation, not long before she died, burst into tears and said, “Oh, that I had repented when the Spirit of God was striving with me! but now I am undone.”
She afterwards exclaimed, “Oh, how have I been deceived! When I was in health, I delayed repentance from time to time! Oh, that I had my time to live over again, that I had obeyed the gospel, but now I must burn in heil for ever. I cannot bear it; I cannot bear it!”
Not long before she died she said, “Eternity! Eternity! Oh, to burn throughout eternity!”
