BIBLE QUIZ

13 minuten leestijd

Dear Boys and Girls,

Together we have recently started a new year. Each month we hope to be able to bring you another Bible quiz, the Lord willing, These quizzes are not only to see how well you know your Bibles and how quickly you can arrive at the answers, but hopefully also to teach you what God says to you in and by His Word. He speaks to all of us, whether we are young or old, whether parents or children, calling unto us to seek Him and acknowledge Him.

There are many texts in the Bible which are directed particularly to boys and girls, and therefore these should have your attention. Children are greatly privileged when they may have parents who, from the moment of their birth, provide for them and show love for them day and night. At that time of life, a child is quite helpless and needs constant care, and therefore loving parents are such a blessing. But also in later life parents give guidance and love. In our Psalter we sing about “the tender love a father has for all his children dear,” and that, of course, includes the mother, also.

The Bible gives a number of examples of parental concern, such as Jochebed when Moses was an infant. However, even the mother of Sisera, the captain of the army of King Jabin, was looking from her window with concern for the return of her son from battle. Manoah and his wife, Jacob, Jesse, and Joseph and Mary are all examples of parental care. This care is a special blessing if our parents may direct us to fear the Lord and to walk in His ways.

Using such words as honor, obedience, reverence, and fear, the Bible admonishes us to show love in return for all their care. Do we do so? Sad to say, our newspapers today tell us of many who do not. And we must always remember that disobedience to parents is also disobedience to God. Therefore, as we study the Bible together, may we give particular attention to that which is commanded us, at the same time seeking the Lord’s help in doing according to these commandments.

The first letters of our quiz this month spell out six words found in Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians. He, too, had a word of direction to give to young people.

Samuel said to Saul, “To __?__ is better than sacrifice.”

In Jeremiah 3 we read, “Turn, O __?__ children, saith the Lord.”

Solomon’s instructions in the book of Proverbs were, “Be not thou __?__ against evil men, neither desire to be with them.”

Abraham said unto his young men, “Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go __?__ and worship.”

Rehoboam “forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the __?__ men that were grown up with him.”

In Deuteronomy 12 Moses said, “ __?__ and hear all these words which I command thee, that it may go well with thee and with thy children after thee.”

Solomon also said, “Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know __?__.”

At the beginning of the book of Isaiah, the Lord said, “I have nourished and brought up children, and they have __?__ against Me.”

Solomon said, “In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy __?__.”

One of the chapters of Proverbs begins with the words, “My son, __?__ unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding.”

Paul wrote to Timothy, “Let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to __?__ their parents.”

“__?__ did the commandment of Mordecai, like as when she was brought up with him.”

Of the Lord Jesus we read, “And He went down with them, and came to __?__, and was subject unto them.”

David said in the Psalms, “Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will __?__ you the fear of the Lord.”

Lot gave warning of the destruction to come, but he seemed as one that mocked unto his __?__ __?__ __ __?__” (3 words).

Solomon also said, “A fool despiseth his father’s __?__: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.” Of Hophni and Phineas we read, “ __?__ they hearkened not unto the voice of their father.”

The Lord Jesus told of a man who sent each of his sons to work in his vineyard. The question Jesus asked was, “Whether of them __?__ did the will of his father?”

The Lord said of Abraham, “Lor I know him, that he will command his children and his __?__ after him, and they shall keep the way of the Lord.”

In Romans 1 the apostle wrote of those who were “backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of __?__ things, disobedient to parents.”

In Proverbs we read, “My son, keep thy father’s commandment, and forsake not the __?__ of thy mother.”

The instruction of Psalm 148 is: “Both young men, and maidens; __?__ men, and children: Let them praise the name of the Lord.”

__?__ “went down unto the floor, and she did according to all that her mother in law bade her.”

The fifth commandment is: “Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy __?__ may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”

Again we will answer the letters which we have received —

JUDITH VERHEIJ — We are quite well, Judith. Do you like to sleep in a tent? It is certainly different from sleeping in your own bed. We read about tents quite a few times in the Bible. Mention is even made of some persons who were tent-makers by occupation. Do you know who they were?

REUBEN KREFT — How many boys did you have sleeping in the barn, Reuben? We hope all those boys didn’t disturb the animals too much. Since you had all that snow, you were able to use the sled which you had made. Did it work well? Quite often snow is used in the Bible as an example of pure whiteness, but not too often do we read of snow on the ground.

KIM VAN WINGERDEN — Thank you for your wishes for the new year, Kim. The needs are there everyday again, even though we don’t always think of them as we should. Samson went out, saying, “ I will go out as at other times before,” not knowing that the blessing of the Lord was no longer with him. My fax number is (616) 383-2001, if you want to use it.

RODNEY VANDENBERG — Have you been able to hatch some eggs, Rodney? I find that to be an amazing thing to watch as the little chicks break out of their shells. Your chickens will really keep you busy in your spare time. Maybe some day, the Lord willing, we can come to see them.

ALINE BOSCH — Thanks to you and your family for the wishes for the new year, Aline. Yes, summer vacation does seem to fly by. Now you must be back in school and are busy everyday. But even the school year flies by quickly. I am sure you know what Moses said in Psalm 90, and we see this taking place every day.

JALENE VAN HOEPEN — It was nice to hear from you, Jalene. It seems you have been having a lot of rain this winter. We know that we cannot do without rain, but most people would rather see the sun shining every day. Was it your grandparents who once lived on Vancouver Island?

JAMES VANDEN BRINK — Yes, James, it is more than thirty years ago that we started with the Bible quizzes. It seems like a long time, but we can hardly believe it is that long. Congratulations on your birthday. You should be receiving this issue of the Banner of Truth before that time. Thanks also to your mother for her note.

MELANIE VAN ESCH — Welcome to the Bible quiz, Melanie. It is always nice to see new names added to the list. Do you live on a farm? Since we have always lived in the city, we think farms are especially nice. Maybe we wouldn’t think this if we had to do a farmer’s work every day.

STEFANIE GRISNICH — Our school had a Christmas program one evening the week before Christmas, Stefanie. It takes a lot of work to prepare for a program, I’m thinking. You must practice quite a few weeks before the program is given. Our congratulations to your grandmother on her birthday.

JUSTUS VERHEIJ — How many miles is it to Gisborne from your home, Justus? Is Gisborne quite a large city? New Zealand always seems so far away, but that is probably what you think about Michigan, of Chicago, or places like that. People are found everywhere a person goes, but of many it must be said what the apostle once said, “Without God in the world.”

BYRON KREFT — Yes, we have had some freezing rain in the winter months also, Byron. It can cause branches of trees to fall, but also power and telephone lines. We have become so dependent upon electricity for all our conveniences that we find it difficult to get along without it. Congratulations on your birthday. Also greetings to your family.

DENNIS VANDENBERG — It was nice to hear from you, too, Dennis. Are you helping Rodney take care of his chickens? Or perhaps you help your father in the barn? There is always lots to do on the farm, I’m sure of that. How is your little sister doing? Give our greetings to your parents and grandparents.

MARIA GRISNICH — What a nice long letter, Maria. Yes, the Tekko books are very nice. A third one will become available sometime in the future, D. V. It must be your dog did not like cats too well if he chased them all away. We heard about all the sadness in your congregation because of the loss of loved ones. And we see that it is not only old people who are taken away.

SARAH-JANE DE JONGE — You’ll have to be careful that you don’t squeeze your little sister too hard, Sarah-Jane. But it is nice that you think so much of her. I’m sure, as she grows older, she will also be glad to have you as her older sister. In the Bible we also read several times about sisters. Can you think of any?

ROBYNN VANDENBERG — It sounds as though you are going to be a good seamstress, Robynn, since you are already making things for yourself and for your doll. God’s Word tells us of a woman who made coats and garments for poor people. Do you know who that was? Is your friend’s father feeling better again?

JONATHAN DE JONGE — Your letter is the last one this time, Jonathan. There were quite a few of them. You wrote that you were going to get some wood for the wood stove. It reminded me of a text in Proverbs, which begins with the words, “Where no wood is....” D o you know what the rest of the text is?

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for the many answers to the quiz. May the Lord teach us by His Word, for as was said of the two disciples, we are “slow to understand” unless He teaches us. We look forward to hearing from you again next month, the Lord willing.

With love,
Your friend,
“Uncle Garret”
