Our Duty to Our Neighbor

“For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself’ (Galatians 5:14), that is:

1. We must take cognizance of our neighbor’s concerns. “Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others” (Philippians 2:4).

2. We must render to all their due. “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour” (Romans 13:7).

3. We must speak truth to one another. “These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbor” (Zechariah 8:16).

4. We must do as we would be done by. “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12).

5. We must live peaceably with all men. “If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18).

6. We must succor and relieve those that are poor and in distress. “And if thy brother be waxen poor, and fallen in decay with thee; then thou shalt relieve him: yea, though he be a stranger, or a sojourner; that he may live with thee” (Leviticus 25:35).

7. We must forgive those that have injured us. “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye” (Colossians 3:13).

8. We must please our neighbors for their good. “Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not Himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on Me” (Romans 15:2-3).

9. We must reprove those that do amiss. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them” (Ephesians 5:11).

10. We must bear one another’s burdens. “Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

11. We must pray for one another. “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed” (James 5:16).

12. We must provoke one another to love and to good works. “And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works” (Hebrews 10:24).
