CURRENT EVENTS

Abortion Rate Falling

A recent report shows growing problems for the abortion industry: a falling abortion rate and a dwindling number of doctors and facilities willing to perform the procedure. The study, from the November/December issue of Family Planning Perspectives, found a 14 percent decline in the number of “abortion providers” between 1992 and 1996. The Alan Guttmacher Institute, which published the study, says that all measures of abortion have dropped dramatically in the 1990's, including the rate per thousand women and the ratio of pregnancies that end in abortion. The report also stated that 86 percent of U.S. counties have no facilities known to be performing abortions. Hospitals and individual physicians are increasingly getting out of the abortion business. Guttmacher, a group with close ties to the abortion movement, viewed much of this news with alarm. May it be bound upon our hearts to pray for our countries regarding this serious national sin of abortion. May we call upon the Lord, asking for repentant hearts.

Peru Sterilizations Continue

Peru continues to administer forced sterilizations to women despite inter-national criticism of the program, the London Guardian reports. The paper noted, however, that the number of sterilizations fell from at least 130,000 in 1997 to 43,000 in 1998, largely due to press coverage of the program. The U.S. government banned funding of coercive sterilization policies last year after Peru's program was exposed during congressional hearings. With all the freedoms that we have in our countries, we take so much for granted. Oh, that the Lord would give us thankful and humble hearts for all the blessings bestowed upon us. Then we would be able to “enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4).

American Psychiatric Association

The American Psychiatric Association Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a position statement opposing any treatment designed to counsel people to renounce their homosexuality. The statement claimed there is evidence that the treatment, known as reparative therapy, can be “destructive.” Ex-gay groups deny the existence of any such evidence.

Teacher Files Suit

James Merrick, an openly homosexual teacher at Rio Bravo-Greely Union School in Bakersfield, California, has filed discrimination complaints against the school superintendent and principal for allowing the removal of students from his class, according to Culture Facts. The incident began when Merrick publicly denounced a Kern County official who criticized homosexual behavior. He then filed the lawsuits after the school transferred several children out of his class at their parents' request. So far nine children have transferred. He is demanding that the children be reinstated in his class and that no more be removed. By having our own schools, such an influence has been largely eliminated from our teenagers; however, we must continue to pray for those in higher education, where similar situations also occur. Solomon said, “When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: to deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things” (Pro verbs 2:10-12).

50th Anniversary

The Lord willing, on February 24, 1999,
our dear parents, grandparents, and
great-grandparents,

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rus

hope to commemorate their
50th wedding anniversary.

It is our wish and prayer that the Lord
may be near and dear to them and
their loved ones for this time, but
above all for eternity.

“O give thanks unto the Lord; for He is
good: for His mercy endureth for ever”
(Psalm 136:1).

Planned Parenthood Funds Withdrawn

North Little Rock City Council, in Arkansas, voted unanimously to withdraw $20,000 it had previously approved for a proposed Planned Parenthood clinic. Council members made their decision after holding a public hearing, which about 350 pro-life advocates attended in order to oppose the clinic, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported.

Senators ask FCC to Punish Lewd Radio Broadcasts

A group of eight U.S. senators has demanded in a letter that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) impose a crackdown on radio stations which air obscene and lewd programming. “We urge you to launch an inquiry into this matter to determine whether strong warnings, penalties, or even license revocations are necessary to stop this proliferation of lewd broadcasting,” the letter said. FCC Chairman William Kennard responded by saying that the agency is already doing everything it can.

Christian Newspaper Faces Obstacles

The British Columbia Transit Authority has refused to allow the B.C. Christian News, a monthly Christian newspaper, to be distributed on transit properties. Transit authorities said people would find the paper “derogatory and offensive, with respect to abortion and sexual orientation issues.” More than two dozen other publications, including publications with liberal and sex-oriented content, are distributed on transit property.
