BIBLE QUIZ

15 minuten leestijd

The first letters of the answers to the quiz this month spell out part of a question which the prophet Elijah asked the people of his days. In those days there were many who at times worshipped the God of Israel and at other times worshipped Baal, or it could perhaps be said that at times they tried to please the prophets of the Lord and at other times to please jezebel. Elijah pointed out to them how impossible this was to do. If Baal was their god, they should serve him, but if Jehovah was God, then they should not be bowing before Baal. As Joshua had done many years earlier, he set before them the choice which they should make.

There are many choices which we make every day regarding the things we do. For most of us the question which the Lord Jesus mentioned in His sermon on the mount, "What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?" is not asked because of poverty, but often because we have so many choices to make regarding these things. Such choices probably have little lasting effect in our lives, but there are also choices which can lead us to places and activities which do have a great effect upon us. To mention a few biblical examples, think of David on the roof of his house, of the prodigal son in a far country, and of Peter in the hall of Caiaphas. Perhaps you can think of others.

Our choices of friends, careers, and activities should be made a matter of prayer, since they have such an effect in our lives. In these things God's Word also gives many directions for us and many examples of others, some who have made wrong choices and some who have made right choices. A walk through the woods along a strange path, with many paths leading off to the right and the left, will often cause us to be uncertain whether we are going in the right direction. However, when we find signs along the way, pointing out the way we should be going, these are most helpful and reassuring for us. Likewise, God's Word serves as a most perfect guide to those who seek to go in the right way upon life's journey. We hope that by showing the right and the wrong choices of others, we may be helped in all our choices in life.

In Proverbs 1, we read, "For that they __?__ knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD."

Moses chose "rather to suffer __?__ with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season."

The psalmist said, "A __?__ that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked."

Daniel said to the king, "And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, __?__ thou knewest all this."

In Psalm 119 it is said, "Wherewithal shall a __?__ man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to Thy Word."

When the Lord Jesus saw how the Pharisees chose out the chief rooms, He said, "For whosoever __?__ himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted."

Moses said to the people, "I have set before you life and death, __?__ and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live."

Joshua said to the children of Israel, "And if it seem __?__ unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve."

The Lord Jesus said to Peter, "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into __?__: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

The meaning of TEKEL on the wall of the palace was: "Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found __?__."

Isaiah wrote, "For thus saith the LORD unto the __?__ that keep My sabbaths, and choose the things that please Me, and take hold of My covenant."

Later the Lord said by Isaiah, "When I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before Mine ? , and did choose that wherein I delighted not."

In the book of Hebrews we read, "How shall we escape, if we __?__ so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him."

In the book of Ecclesiastes, we read, "Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both __?__ and judgment."

"When Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; __?__ before Me, and be thou perfect. "

The Lord said to the prophet Gad, "Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I __?__ thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee."

King Saul said to Jonathan, "Do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine __?__ confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?"

"Lot chose him all the __?__ of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

Job's wife said to him, "Dost thou still retain thine __?__? curse God, and die."

In His holy law, the Lord said, "Thou shalt have __?__ other gods before Me."

Judah said to Joseph, "God hath found out the __?__ of thy servants."

The Lord said by Isaiah, "The ox knoweth his __?__, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, My people doth not consider."

The Lord said by Jeremiah, "Hath a __?__ changed their gods, which are yet no gods? but My people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit."

The Lord Jesus said, "No man can __?__ two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other."

Again there are letters to answer —

CHRISTINEKE VERHOEF - It is hard to believe that summer is past, Christineke, but the weather certainly proves it. In Psalter 286 we find the words, "The seasons are fixed by wisdom divine," and how necessary that we pause to realize this. More often we complain about the weather, especially as winter approaches. Even though we live closer, we, too, always look forward to seeing Derek.

LARISSA NEELS - Congratulations on the new baby brother, Larissa. The addition of a baby to the family always makes changes in the regular routine of the family. Since you are the oldest, there are many things you can do to help your mother in this busy time. Babies demand quite a bit o f attention, but it is often said that they bring love with them, something we soon find is true.

BRADLEY HOWE - It is always nice for a vacant congregation when a minister visits, Bradley. This we know by experience, since our congregation is also without a minister. Which subject in school do you like best? Perhaps you like everything about school, but usually there is a certain subject that is more interesting. We do hope that Bible is among your favorite subjects.

ANDREW DE VISSER - It has been quite some time ago that we have been in Coaldale, Andrew, since we don't visit Alberta so often. As we become older, it seems as though distant places are even farther away than before, although we did go to the Netherlands last year. Yes, we know some Dutch, but I am sure that our Dutch is quite "gebrekkig," especially in speaking. Have you ever been in the Netherlands?

NELINA BERTRAM - Thank you for the pictures, Nelina. Luke looks like a very healthy baby. Is he always so quiet and content? You have quite a few animals at your house. Do you help take care of some of them? Solomon said that a righteous man regardeth the life o f his beast, and I am sure that also applies to small animals as well as large ones.

JESSICA HOWE - There is always much to learn in school, Jessica, and teachers are an important part of each classroom. Would you like to be a teacher some day? The task of a teacher is not always easy, especially when the students misbehave, but we hope that does not happen very often. How many students do you have in your grade at your school?

JOHANNA DE VISSER - This time of the year seems to bring colds and flu into our homes, Johanna. In the Bible we read about sicknesses which affected people, but we also read about people who were handicapped from birth or because of accidents. All these are the results of the thorns and thistles which the Lord spoke about to Adam after he had eaten from the forbidden tree.

TIMOTHY BERTRAM - Do you go fishing quite often, Timothy? The other question is whether you catch any fish? Are there lakes near your home where you are able to fish? I have a fishing license which gives permission to fish, but that does not guarantee that fish will be caught. We read in the Bible that some o f the disciples were experienced fishermen, but they, too, did not always have success. I am sure you know the story.

SARAH-JANE DE JONGE - It was nice to hear from you again, Sarah-Jane. We did recall receiving your answers some years ago, but we realize that our young friends become older, along with us. There are quite a few who formerly answered the quiz, but now they are married and their children are sending in answers to the quiz. It is an indication that the years are passing by rapidly.

BRADEN NEELS - We are always glad to hear that brothers and sisters are working on the quiz together, Braden. Even fathers and mothers join in. The knowledge of the Bible is important for us, for, as the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy, it is able to make one wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. We live in the city, so we do not have any animals, but we do find it nice to visit farm country.

ERICA BLOM - Congratulations on your new baby brother, Erica. We were glad to hear that everything was going well. We were surprised to hear about the many sheep on your farm. That is almost too many to count accurately. We hope your puppy may prove to be a good sheep dog, since it would be helpful on the farm. Give our greetings to your parents.

REBECCA BERTRAM - There are three letters from you, Rebecca, so you must have been saving them up for several months. It was nice to hear all the news, and it is evident that many things take place in three months. Your letters are well written, so that we can almost picture you in all your activities. You mentioned that you chipped your tooth on a lolly, so I guess I will have to come to New Zealand to find out what a lolly really is.

Many thanks to all the boys and girls for their answers again to the Bible quiz. It is always encouraging to see the mail arrive, but also a wonder to us that we may have so many answers arriving every month. It is our prayer that the Lord may use the Bible study to lead young people in His ways as they grow older. It was David's prayer, "Teach me Thy way, O LORD," and that is a prayer we all need.

With love,
Your friend,
"Uncle Garret

In Loving Memory

John C. Schelling

April 10, 1910 - October 18, 2002

On October 18, 2002, came the time appointed by the Lord to call this brother from his earthly abode after having suffered afflictions and surgery. More than ninety-two years were granted him here in his journey to eternity, in which he related at different times his conviction from Luke 20:42, "But one thing is needful." The Lord gave him a place to serve faithfully in the church where he was a life-long member, first as deacon for twelve years and then elder for eleven years. His passing is mourned, and he will be missed by many, since he was laid to rest, but not without hope, where all mourning will be ended. "For I will turn their mourning into joy" (Jeremiah 31:13b). The funeral was held on October 21, led by Rev. G. M. de Leeuw.

In Memoriam

Rev. J. C. van Ravenswaay

February 4, 1918 — October 21, 2002

On Monday, October 21, 2002, the Lord took home His servant, Rev. J. C. van Ravenswaay, at the age o f 84 years. Johannes Cornelius Van Ravenswaay was born in Heiligenhaus in Germany. When he was five years old, his family moved to Ede in the Netherlands. He studied at the Theological School of the Free Reformed Churches in Apeldoorn. In that denomination he labored from 1944 till 1969 in different churches. However, in 1969 he became a minister in the Gereformeerde Gemeenten, our sister denomination in the Netherlands. There he served the churches of Arnhem, Terneuzen, and, since 1982, Ermelo, where, in 1994, he became emeritus.

Rev. L. Blok led the funeral service on Saturday, October 26. He spoke from Revelation 7:13-15, and at the graveside from Romans. 8:35. In his funeral sermon Rev. Blok mentioned that the last sermon Rev. Van Ravenswaay preached in June 1998 was from Romans 7:24-25, "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord." What a blessing if we may be no stranger of this.

There is again an empty place in God's church on earth and in his family. May the Lord remember the mourning widow and further relatives in mercy. He is a Refuge to all those who, with all their burdens, may flee to Him.

— Rev. C. Vogelaar
